Wigan Athletic have what is known in the journalistic business, as a hoodoo. Away from home that is, having not won on their travels since August.

Given the amount of statistical analysis managers go to - see Marcelo Bielsa for example - you wouldn't be surprised to hear it hasn't escaped manager Paul Cook.

"It is a little pattern that has developed within us. I am sure our supporters don't need to hear me saying the same things all the time.

"We had great support today and we made the lads aware of that. We are doing our best for the fans.

"The players are so close to achieving something but the margins are so small. If you do not put your chances away, it will return to haunt you.

"For 90 minutes there were moments for us. We could have equalised, then we had the penalty. I can guarantee our fans we will go away and do everything we can, between now and the end of the season, to make sure we are in this division next season."

There's nothing like the feeling of winning your first game at a new club. Especially when you're a hero at said club and played 371 games, winning a European Cup* and league title.

So, you would imagine Martin O'Neill will be enjoying tonight's experience, having guided Nottingham Forest to a 3-1 win against Wigan.

"It feels terrifically better. It was great to win the game. I thought we did excellently. There were some great goals and some excellent performances.

"Obviously I got to know the players a little bit better over the past week for a start. That is very important. I am trying to work some things on the training ground as well.

"There were some things we executed very well and some things that we still need to strongly improve on. You are not going to get everything spot on within a week but the response the players gave here today was really terrific."

*Although he played in several rounds up to the final, O'Neill did not grace the field in Forest's first European Cup win against Malmo in Munich. He appeared a year later in Madrid, as Hamburg were beaten.

Hull City boss Nigel Adkins was dealt a double blow in their heavy 3-0 defeat by Blackburn, after star man Jarrod Bowen was withdrawn late on with a knock.

"We don't know how severe that is yet," he said. "Hopefully it's just a kick, but we'll have to wait and see."

His side had been on an impressive spell - going 10 games unbeaten - but their trip across the Pennines was a chastening one.

"The players have been on a great run of form, but this wasn't at the level we've been at.

"We want to win all the time. I'm annoyed we haven't won but I was disappointed with our first-half performance.

"We probably passed the ball too much which invited Blackburn on the front foot."

Tony Mowbray can sit back with his can of beer later tonight with a satisfied smile, after his Blackburn side tore into an in-form Hull to push closer to the play-off places.

Adam Armstrong, Jack Rodwell and Harrison Reed scored the goals to seal a 3-0 win and push Rovers three points off the top six.

"I think the first half was as good as I can remember from them," the Rovers boss said.

"We had a pretty light week's training and that was there for all to see.

"We had the quality to keep the ball and probe down both sides of the pitch. I thought we really took them (Hull) out of their stride.

"It was good. We played like a top team and that denied the opposition opportunities."

    Oooof.

Jay O'Shea looses his balance and in doing so trips over Lee Frecklington and the Lincoln skipper's trailing leg catches O'Shea on the forehead.

There's no malice, but it's a head injury. O'Sea's back in the game but now sporting a Terry Butcher-esque bandage.

jackabout: Peterborough are a bit of a joke, sacking managers when they are in the play off positions. They can't keep sacking Managers.

  20. Warne philosophical after Millers losspublished at 18:36 Greenwich Mean Time 26 January 2019

    FT: Rotherham 1-2 Leeds

There was much to like about Rotherham's performance against high-fliers Leeds this afternoon, but they came away with nothing after Leeds' second-half fightback secured a 2-1 win.

Semi Ajayi's goal was a belter, but Mateusz Klich's brace turned it round. It might have been different had Will Vaulks' first-half rocket found its way past debutant Kiko Casilla.

"It is always difficult to concede that late on because it doesn't allow you to throw the kitchen sink at them," Millers boss Paul Warne said afterwards.

"I am 100 per cent honest and I am proud of their performance. We limited them to very few chances.

"I thought from the lads' attitude and sticking to the gameplan could have been enough to come away with a positive result.

"Nobody expected us to win this game but I thought the lads gave everything they had and predominantly made all the right decisions."
