    Robbie Savage

Talking of an interim manager, I’ve worked with Steve Bruce and Paul Ince has played with him.

Yes, the players are on £200,000 a week, but they need an arm around them. They have been hurt by the criticism they have received.

I know Brucey, training would be fun. When I was at Birmingham I loved him. He was great with me and I respect him.

He’s been the captain at the club. He would make the players feel so good. That’s why I think he would have fun. He would create positivity and I think the players would respect that.

    Paul Ince
Former England midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

It is no surprise me that Mourinho has been sacked. It’s not just on the basis of the Liverpool game. But when you go back to the Newcastle game, the Bournemouth game, this is something that has been ongoing. The problem has always been there, it was just highlighted a bit more by the way they played against Liverpool.

But Pep Guardiola will keep spending at Manchester City, Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool will keep spending. It will be three, four or five years before Manchester United can compete and the fans have to understand that.

In my time If a player became available they would want to go to Man United. Nowadays if a player is available there are three or four other clubs now they would want to play for.

Jose Mourinho: How Manchester United manager's season collapsed

I would like Jose to go back to the old Mourinho. He's been fighting players. The relationships haven't been there like when he was at Chelsea, Porto and Inter Milan.

There he was tight with his players, they looked like they loved each other, there was a mutual respect. Things have gone sour at Real Madrid, back at Chelsea and now at United and you don't see that anymore.

I'm not saying that's necessarily his fault - maybe it's to do with the next generation or the modern player. But I'd love to see Mourinho go and have a real good break, at least a year and then come back, try and evolve a bit and try to bring back a bit of the old Mourinho that everyone loved.

Incredible sense of entitlement coming through. "This is Manchester United, biggest club in the world" is part of the problem. The club is rotting from the head down with the Glazers and the position they're in is a result of commercial success being granted higher status than footballing success. These decisions are coming home to roost and the state of the club is a direct result of the decisions made at the highest level of the organisation. They are where they deserve to be, simple as that.

Under the last three Manchester United managers it's been a case of them being allowed to sign who they want. There has not been a long-term plan in place. Those players suited David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho in the here and now.

Ed Woodward has backed his managers but it's not necessarily been the best thing for the long-term future.

There has to be someone who tells the manager that a player might not be worth that much money, that he's wrong for the squad, that the club have a structure.

It could even be things like a player wanting £250,000 a week but you offer £200,000 because they're coming to United. Test them - if he balks at that then move on.

  15. 'Poch ticks all the boxes'published at 19:25 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2018

    Darren Fletcher
Former Man Utd midfielder on BBC Radio 5 live

Mauricio Pochettino ticks all the boxes for United. He's proved at Southampton and Spurs that he can develop young players, he's got a style of play, he's had confrontations with players and he's dealt with it fantastically.

They have big characters at Spurs and there have been a few bits and pieces with different players and he seems to have sorted all that out.

For me, if United come calling, that is big to turn down. You wonder about Real Madrid but they change their manager every year - Pochettino would have a chance to be at United for a long time, settle there and build something fantastic.

Spurs aren't going to win the Premier League. They are moving to a new stadium, they are going to lose players. United have the backing and resources that incorporates winning the league. I don't think Spurs' plan involves winning the Premier League, I think it involves staying in the top four and paying for the new stadium. That will place restrictions on the players you can bring in - I reckon Christian Eriksen and Toby Alderweireld will be off soon and the money to replace them is massive.

If Pochettino has ambitions of winning things then if United come calling, he'd be more than interested. He'll think that's a place he can build a legacy, win trophies and establish himself as one of the best managers in the world.

What people seem to be forgetting is if Utd go for an interim manager, then are they really going to get the freedom in January to spend millions? I highly doubt it. They'll be expected to make do with the current squad, damage limitation for the season, quite the tough task considering the state of this current squad!

  19. 'Almost writing off two seasons'published at 19:22 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2018

    Darren Fletcher
Former Man Utd midfielder on BBC Radio 5 live

'Smiling assassin' sums Ole Gunnar Solskjaer up - I've been in dressing rooms with him and he can have some cutting words.

He's a lovely fella but he'd let people know when they weren't doing things that were expected of them. He'd been at the club with a lot of big characters.

United shouldn't really be appointing an interim manager. They're almost writing off two seasons because if they appoint a new manager in the summer he's not going to have much time to look for new players. Who is going to sort out the squad? Is he going to have a say or is he at a club at the moment and that's why United have to wait until the summer?

There is a real concern that you could have two seasons of rebuilding again, which is a real worry, and Manchester United should never be in this position. It's mismanagement from the top level.
