  1. 'Not many interim choices'published at 19:20 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2018

    Darren Fletcher
Former Man Utd midfielder on BBC Radio 5 live

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has done well with Molde and has been United's under-23 manager so has experience of working with some of the players.

When you appoint an interim manager, there are not going to be many choices, so you have to go to someone who knows the club, has a bit of experience, a bit of know-how and will give the players the platform to express themselves.

There will be a bounce after Mourinho's departure and people will question the players because they'll probably come out now, run around like maniacs and play brilliantly. But that's just what happens in football.

  2. 'Pochettino for me would be the person'published at 19:18 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2018

    Paul Ince
Former England midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

I think, first and foremost, Manchester United need to look at a sporting director. I know Jose Mourinho was adamant about not working with one. So whoever they think about bringing in they have to be willing to have a sporting director.

Zinedine Zidane? I don’t think he speaks English so he would not be ready to come in yet.

Mauricio Pochettino for me would be the person, I know the Spurs fans won’t want to hear that.

He seems comfortable at Tottenham, they are going to the new stadium. But would he want to wait and go to Real Madrid? That would be his dream move.

As well as Spurs have done, they have not brought a lot of players in and eventually he will get tired of not getting the players he wants and not winning trophies.

Benj: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to Man Utd would be hilarious! He was a disaster for Cardiff and has no idea what he's doing. Please bring him in for Saturday!

Kyle: Despite United being a much bigger club than Tottenham I cannot see Pochetino leaving even at the end of the season. Spurs are in a much better position, they have an excellent first 11 and squad and they are going to a great new stadium.

    Manchester City

Manchester City haven’t been eliminated at the quarter-final stage of the League Cup since 2007-08, when they lost to eventual winners Spurs. They’ve progressed the last five times they’ve reached this stage.

  5. 'Bruce should be involved'published at 19:14 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2018

    Darren Fletcher
Former Man Utd midfielder on BBC Radio 5 live

People forget that Steve Bruce was Manchester United captain. He should be involved in the club in some way - perhaps a director of football or a go-between between a young manager and the board.

Former players like Bruce and Bryan Robson should be more involved in the club - they know what Manchester United is about.

That's where Mike Phelan alongside Ole Gunnar Solskjaer comes in. Mike is an experienced head who was with the club during its most successful period.

The days of Man Utd popping down to White Hart Lane to pick up a Carrick, Sheringham or Berbatov were over years ago..people like Neville need to stop bleating about a manager they've got absolutely no chance of getting because the more they go on about Poch the more they will alienate other top candidates.

    Jeff Hervel - Wembley

I would have no problem with Rafa Benitez coming to OT. Been a winner wherever he's gone, tactically sound, likes to play attractive football, organised, and done miracles at a club with no money.

  7. 'Not working hard enough'published at 19:12 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2018

    Darren Fletcher
Former Man Utd midfielder on BBC Radio 5 live

I want the caretaker manager to be somebody who is going to play attacking, exciting football. Who will allow players to do that? They clearly felt they were being restricted under Mourinho.

When a manager first comes in and introduces a style you maybe don't agree with, you go with it at first but when the results don't come, you think, 'Why are we playing this way?'

I understand being defensive and passive to an extent or letting the opposition have the ball but once the success doesn't come then players don't want to play that type of football.

Those players want to play fast, attacking football. They want to press - United should be taking the game to every team they play bar maybe like Liverpool where you sit in for the first 20 minutes.

I want to see someone who is going to give the players freedom but also put demands on them to work harder. They are not working hard enough.

  8. Postpublished at 19:11 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2018

There's never a right or wrong answer to this but - Are Manchester United the 'biggest club in the world' any more?

Is it still an automatic decision for a player or a manager to leave, say, Tottenham for Old Trafford?

Who is more likely to win a trophy this season, or next for that matter?

  9. 'Is that where United are really at?'published at 19:10 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2018

    Robbie Savage
Ex-Leicester City & Wales midfielder on BBC Radio 5 live

For Manchester United to be appointing an interim manager now is a shambles. Is that where United are really at?

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is a legend and the fans still sing his name. But, really, the biggest club in the world appointing an interim boss who manages Molde? It’s a shambles.

    Paul PogbaImage source, Getty Images

Paul Pogba is a Manchester United player. I saw him as a kid, he tries too hard sometimes. I don't think he's conducted himself well recently and I think he needs a kick up the backside.

That's another concern for me because everyone talked about who is going to go - Pogba or Mourinho? If Pogba starts thinking that he is bigger than Mourinho, that is your next problem. Someone needs to get hold of Pogba and tell him this wasn't a battle between him and Mourinho and he's won. He's got to prove himself now and a manager has to come in and demand more from him to lead the team forward.

  12. 'I'd be looking at Hughes and Bruce'published at 19:04 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2018

    Paul Ince
Former England midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

Steve Bruce and Mark HughesImage source, Getty Images

There are two former United players who are out of work and can take the job straight away in Mark Hughes and Steve Bruce.

They have been to the biggest clubs; they know Manchester United inside out. They were there at the start of our success under Sir Alex Ferguson.

If they came in and did well, improved the style of football, put a smile on people’s faces, then all of a sudden things can change.

Going for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, he struggled at Cardiff. It might be good for the fans but there are two experienced players who know the club out of work. I’d be looking at those two.

  15. '£700m spent and no improvement'published at 19:00 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2018

    Darren Fletcher
Former Man Utd midfielder on BBC Radio 5 live

When Sir Alex Ferguson left, people said that was the worst squad ever to win the league, I don't buy that. But we did need three big hitters to come in.

The squad players were good enough, but the problem we had were our big characters and our better players were of an age that they needed replacing. That was a perfect opportunity but David Moyes didn't do it - he only signed Marouane Fellaini but we needed another central defender, we needed a play-making midfielder and we could've done with a striker. That was the beginning of it.

The style of manager and style of play has been a big problem for me. Louis van Gaal - that's his style of football. It's stand in your position. pass it here, no creative freedom, no individualism.

Angel di Maria was the most Alex Ferguson-style United player you could get. In the first few weeks I thought, 'That this is a proper player, this is what we've needed for a long time.' It quickly got kicked out of him.

Somebody has got to take responsibility for this and that they've given these managers 100s and 100s of millions, a blank cheque book. Is this squad better than when Ferguson left? Probably not. It's not improved and it's had 700m spent on it, which is a massive concern.

Ed Woodward has given the managers backing with money but they've not done well with that money and maybe that's where the next change needs to come for United. There has to be a change there who is going to take responsibility. There has to be club signings, scouting and more in-depth detail.

  16. Postpublished at 18:59 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2018

Some great detail into the background and the the issues around Manchester United here from these ex-players.

Just who is the right man to come in and take the juggernaut on?

  17. 'Fergie would scout your parents...'published at 18:58 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2018

    Darren Fletcher
Former Man Utd midfielder on BBC Radio 5 live

There are characteristics of Manchester United players you need to look for - is he a winner? How does he train? It's about getting as much information as possible, not just watching video tapes or watching people in games.

Sir Alex Ferguson used to want to meet your parents. He would see how tall they are and ask you about your background in life. That's the level of detail that he went into to sign players.

He knew everyone's background and what made them tick and what made them, he felt, United players.

But you look at the squad now and you think, 'Good player but does he fancy it?'

  18. 'Some of them have been a shambles'published at 18:55 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2018

    Robbie Savage
Ex-Leicester City & Wales midfielder on BBC Radio 5 live

The players have to look at themselves as well. They are being outrun by every other Premier League side this season, that is not acceptable.

Sunday, against Liverpool, was one of the worst performances I have seen from a Manchester United side in all my years of playing football.

Mourinho cannot help Herrera kicking the ball out of play or Fellaini kicking the ball out of play, defenders constantly making mistakes.

You can argue he bought those players but some of them have been a shambles.

  19. 'Are they Manchester United players?published at 18:55 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2018

    Paul Ince
Former England midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

When you look at the players they have brought in, are they Manchester United players? It is about how you conduct yourself on and off the pitch and how you work in training week in, week out.

It is about having the mental toughness to play at Old Trafford in front of 70 thousand people every week. I look at the squad and don’t see anyone who is a Manchester United player.

  20. Mahrez makes his returnpublished at 18:53 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2018

Leicester v Man City (19:45 GMT)

How important is the Carabao Cup quarter final?

Leicester make seven changes from the side beaten by Crystal Palace. Only Harry Maguire, Christian Fuchs, Wilfred Ndidi and Demarai Gray keep their places.
