  4. 'They want to play a certain way'published at 18:50 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2018

    Paul Ince
Former England midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

When you manage a football club you have to take responsibility for everything that happens. It is down to you whatever happens on the pitch.

Manchester United has been built on traditions. They play attacking football. By getting Mourinho they knew that wasn’t going to be the case.

He has always bought players who are ready made, aged 27 or 28. And to give him credit that is why he has always been successful. But this is Manchester United, they are different to most clubs and want to play a certain way.

They are not performing well. They are not creating chances. They conceded 36 chances against Liverpool on Sunday. That would never have happened in my time.

  5. 'United shouldn't be suprised'published at 18:42 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2018

    Darren Fletcher
Former Man Utd midfielder on BBC Radio 5 live

Are you surprised when you appoint Jose Mourinho that the style of football is not going to be good? That he is not going to bring through youth players?

He has a track record of winning but not in the Manchester United style of attractive football.

It's not all the manager's fault to manage the club he had to bring in the right players and recognise the brand of the club - you can't play negative football at United. The players were disillusioned by it.

Mourinho should've recognised that and have tried to adapt his style before he came to the club. But the club knew what Mourinho was like before he joined.

Duncan Castles - a journalist known to be close to Jose Mourinho - has given his take on how the decision to remove the Portuguese came about.

"Manchester United brought forward plans to replaceJose Mourinho as manager in the wake of the debilitating defeat at Liverpool," he wrote in the Daily Record., external

"Concerned at a sequence of unsatisfactory domestic results and the fractured relationship between United's most expensive on-field acquisition and the first-team manager, United's board elected to terminate Mourinho's contract less than halfway through the season instead of waiting until its end.

"Record Sport understands that a decision to dismiss the most successful Old Trafford manager of the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era was taken during a conference call on Monday."

The Frenchman is also top of many bookies' lists. He spent two years at United at the end of his career and has built a positive reputation as a coach.

Blanc has managed at the top level with Paris St-Germain but is he really synonymous with the club and does he understand the traditions? Also, he has never managed in English football. He looks an outsider.

Who will take the reins in the short term though?

  18. 'Pochettino would be interested in United role'published at 17:16 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2018

    Well, well, well.

The Times are reporting that Mauricio Pochettino would be interested in taking the Manchester United job if it were offered to him., external

"Mauricio Pochettino wants to be considered for the Manchester United manager’s job next season despite having four and a half years left on his contract at Tottenham Hotspur," writes deputy football correspondent Matt Hughes.

"The Argentinian is understood to regard the opportunity of moving to Old Trafford as too good to turn down, although it would cost United £34 million in compensation to prise him from Tottenham, which would take the club’s total bill for sacking José Mourinho earlier today past £50 million."

Luke Nixon: Yes Jose got things wrong, but he’s a proven winner who was held back by the board. One day Woodward has to stop pointing fingers and look in the mirror. We need a director of football who understands the game, not a businessman who doesn’t.

Kyle: United fans want to see attacking football and winning football. For that I would firstly go for Zidane if you cannot get him either Lucien Favre the Dortmund manager or Julian Nagalsmann. Eddie Howe would be a good contender for the job too.

Mauricio Pochettino will be mentioned. It is a fantastic job but I would be amazed if he left the Spurs project now with a new stadium, young players, new contracts, and things going so well.

Zinedine Zidane is free after having had incredible time at Real Madrid so I'm sure his name will be mentioned also. Eddie Howe also.

Is it time to have a Director of Football installed at Manchester United? Perhaps, but it works best if they are appointed together.

Look at the success City and Liverpool are having with that structure.
