Gylfi Sigurdsson slides in Dominic Calvert-Lewin down the left, who checks back and passes to Bernard just inside the corner of the area.

Bernard tries to bend his strike inside the far post but gets no curve on it at all and the ball slices well wide.

Ayoze Perez gets Newcastle going forward but Miguel Almiron swings a ball over to the empty space where Salomon Rondon had been. Not ideal.

Miguel Almiron strides forward, plays in Matt Ritchie and he swings it towards Ayoze Perez but Kurt Zouma manages to intercept and get it out for a corner. Promising for the hosts.

I've just seen a reverse angle of the Jordan Pickford penalty incident I'd not seen yet.

Pickford sidesteps two yards to his right to take out Salomon Rondon.

It's clearly deliberate.

It's a tackle that any inside centre in the Six Nations would be proud of.

Right, so let's look at the main talking point from that half - why wasn't Jordan Pickford sent off for bringing down Salomon Rondon?

Well, IFAB - football's rule-making body - relaxed the red card rule in 2016 so players who commit a foul to deny a goalscoring opportunity will no longer automatically be sent off.

Players committing accidental fouls to deny a goalscoring chance will now be cautioned instead. So it's odd that Lee Mason didn't at least book Pickford, given he must have decided it was an accidental foul.

Also, deliberate fouls will still incur a red card. I'd argue that Pickford was looking at Rondon when he impeded the Newcastle striker, suggesting he knew what he was doing in bringing him down. Newcastle are right to feel aggrieved.

Everton hack it forward and Lee Mason blows the whistle.

No foul and Schar is frustrated, trying to wrestle Digne back to his feet, leading to a bit of a scuffle.

First yellow card of the afternoon as Jamaal Lascelles brings down Richarlison, who is in need of some treatment to his left elbow.

An easy decision for Lee Mason but one that brings jeers from a home crowd that feel hard done by so far today.

Ayoze Perez is onside and in the clear from a ball over the top.

He takes a touch and fires with his left but Jordan Pickford dives to his left to repel it and the rebound back off Perez is cleared.

Newcastle think Pickford shouldn't even be on the pitch. He'll probably have a blinder from here on out.

Matt Ritchie is just beaten to the ball by Gylfi Sigurdsson and he fells the Everton captain.

Pickford has made up for that error because he has had an absolute nightmare moments before. Rafa Benitez must be beside himself, there is no legislation for this - if they can’t convert penalties they won’t win games.
