Good controlled play from Celtic. Passing the ball round exploiting those areas. A great shot from McGregor. Go and test the goalkeeper is the message.

Callum McGregor strides forward from a central position and has a shot from 20 yards. It's on his weaker right foot and straight at goalkeeper Neto but the Brazilian fumbles it wide for a corner.

    Celtic 0-0 Valencia

James Forrest cuts in from the right flank and gets in a tangle with Toni Lato on the edge of the box. The Celtic winger takes a tumble, the crowd roar for a spot-kick and the ref doesn't bat an eye.

Seven of the Valencia team that went to Barcelona and drew 2-2 (having been 2-0 ahead) start tonight. That was a Barca side with Messi, Suarez, Coutinho and Rakitic. They might be struggling a little bit in La Liga but there is no doubt that on given days Valencia are capable of exceptional things.

  9. Celtic 'relaxed and in good form'published at 19:56 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February 2019

    Celtic v Valencia (20:00)

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers tells BT Sport: "We come into this game in good form and relaxed, with our players playing well. These games are always a big opportunity for them to test themselves against the best.

"I’ve been really impressed with Scott Bain’s temperament. I had no hesitation in putting him in. I’m sure he’ll perform well.

"Oli Burke has settled in very well. At this level Oli's speed, movement and passing is really important. He fits in perfectly. He has a lot of strength that we are trying to exploit."

  13. McGregor just keeps going and going...published at 19:42 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February 2019

    Celtic v Valencia (20:00)

What happened to Celtic at this stage last year then?

Callum McGregor struck in Glasgow to give a dominant Celtic a 1-0 lead against Zenit St Petersburg.

However, it was a very different story in the second leg, with the Russians easing to a 3-0 victory in front of their own fans.

With the home side dealing with a long injury list, McGregor is one of just four players starting tonight that began the first leg against Zenit.

Remarkably, McGregor will be making his 52nd appearance of the season, for club and country, this evening.

  14. One major trophy missing for Valenciapublished at 19:38 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February 2019

    Celtic v Valencia (20:00)

Tonight's visitors won this competition back in 2004 when it was the Uefa Cup, taking care of Marseille in the final.

They also lifted the old Cup Winners' Cup in 1980, beating Rangers along the way.

On both occasions they went on to triumph in the Super Cup but Valencia don't have the full set.

Hector Cuper's brilliant side were beaten in the Champions League final in 2000 and 2001, losing out to Real Madrid and Bayern Munich respectively.

Rangers were beaten home and away in the group phase of that 1999-2000 campaign.

A share of the 1998 Intertoto Cup does not offer much in the way of consolation for missing out on the big one...

  16. Celtic's big thank you to Rosenborgpublished at 19:30 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February 2019

    Celtic v Valencia (20:00)

So, how did the teams get here?

Celtic were runners-up behind runaway winners Salzburg in Group B, with the Scottish champions picking up nine points from their six matches.

A final round defeat at home to the Austrians looked like ending their campaign but an unlikely, late equaliser for bottom club Rosenborg – who had lost their five previous games – at RB Leipzig, meant that they finished two points ahead of the Germans rather than getting edged out on goal difference.

Valencia finished third behind Juventus and Manchester United in Group H of the Champions League.

  17. Can Gameiro get his hands on the trophy yet again?published at 19:26 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February 2019

    Celtic v Valencia (20:00)

Kevin Gameiro has been in the wars as he sports a shiner and the experienced French striker must be content with a place on the bench this evening.

The 31-year-old has just five goals this season, following his €16m summer move but two of those have come in his last three outings.

He also enjoys a remarkable record in this competition, having won the Europa League four times in the past five years during spells with Sevilla and Atletico Madrid.

  18. Valencia come unstuck against league rivalspublished at 19:21 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February 2019

    Celtic v Valencia (20:00)

Celtic, Uefa Cup runners-up in 2003, have reached the last 32 in the Europa League twice before but have yet to advance further after defeats to Inter Milan (2015) and Zenit St Petersburg last year.

This is Valencia's fifth appearance at this stage and they have won all four previous ties, keeping clean sheets in seven of the eight matches.

The Spaniards reached the semi-finals in both 2012 and 2014, losing to eventual winners, Atletico Madrid and Sevilla.

In fact, all four of their Europa League knockout phase campaigns have ended with elimination by fellow La Liga sides.

  19. Keep an eye on Cheryshevpublished at 19:17 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February 2019

    Celtic v Valencia (20:00)

Remember the World Cup? Remember the guy who knocked in a few cracking goals for hosts Russia?

Step forward Denis Cheryshev, the Real Madrid graduate on loan from local rivals Villarreal, who will play in support of striker Ruben Sobrino for Valencia.

He scored four times at the 2018 finals, including one of the goals of the tournament against Croatia in the last eight.

Celtic will do well not to let him have a dig from outside the box.

  20. Valencia aim to match Celtic intensitypublished at 19:14 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February 2019

    Celtic v Valencia (20:00)

Head coach Marcelino says Valencia "will have to perform to our very best to get through".

“We have a lot of injuries, so it will be difficult and we’re playing against a really good Celtic team," he said at his media conference yesterday.

“We know they are very difficult to play against, especially at home, and they got through from the group stage ahead of some very good teams.

"Celtic are fast, intense and dynamic. They play vertical football with their passing, they are intense with and without the ball and they are physical.

“We are going to try and be equally as intense and try to keep our rhythm. Hopefully, when we don’t have the ball, our strong points will help too. We will use our experiences and spirit to win. Our intention is always to win."
