What a pass from Jodie Taylor! The vision and the awareness...she knew Lucy Staniforth was making that run but she had the quality to execute it too. Brilliant from Taylor.

    Lucy Staniforth

    You beauty!

Twelve minutes gone and England are ahead.

Brilliant vision from Jodie Taylor sets up Lucy Staniforth who makes a sideways move across goal and let's fly. It hits the bottom corner and her celebration shows you what it means to her.

  3. CLOSE!published at 10 mins

    England 0-0 Japan

Great play from England! Jodie Taylor is off balance as she takes aim in the box and it fumbles just wide.

    England 0-0 Japan

Japan have a great fluidity in their play.

They weave their way up the pitch but have no end product at the moment.

They're also a very vocal team. My Japanese is limited to 'hello' and 'welcome to my shop', so I'm not quite sure what they're saying, but it's a constant stream of chat and encouragement.

  5. Postpublished at 6 mins

    England 0-0 Japan

Steph Houghton sends the Japan keeper into action! Erina Yamane has to be alert to the Man City defender's strong 25-yard shot.

The pace of Jodie Taylor will certainly cause the Japanese centre-halves a lot of problems.

  7. Postpublished at 4 mins

    England 0-0

Japan's midfield punt the ball forward but Alex Greenwood is on hand to clear England's lines.

The Lionesses earn a free-kick in a decent position - about 30 yards out on the right.

It's taken short, a long ball is sent over to Steph Houghton but the flag is up.

    England 0-0 Japan

For the first time in this tournament, the players are able to wear short-sleeved shirts without catching pneumonia. It's a balmy 14 degrees in Tampa.

The pitch looks better for it, too. It's certainly greener than Nashville and Philly.

Phil Neville will be pleased if they win it, of course. It's about the bigger picture though. The performance. If he gets that, he'll be happy.

    England v Japan (22:25 GMT)

    Laura Bassett
England defender on Radio 5 live

It is set-up to be one to watch. I am confident. We don't get to play Japan very often. We seem to get to play Germany and USA a lot more.

Japan are so technical. It is a joy to watch. They are also happy to sit deep though, soak up pressure and counter-attack. They haven't started games well in this tournament and they don't create loads of chances. But when they do create, they are ruthless.

Phil Neville is working on getting that 23-women squad right ahead of the World Cup so he will make changes. Confidence has been building. Neville has given chances to the younger players. He has shown that if you're doing well week-in, week-out in the WSL, then you'll get an opportunity.

It is a chance for England to win the competition and lift silverware. It always feels good to be successful.

The teams are on their way out in Tampa, Florida - and the trophy's there too!

The crowd is small which is a shame, really. The home supporters will certainly pile in for the USA v Brazil game later on.

The last time England played Japan it was in the semi-finals of the World Cup in 2015.

    And it was pure heartbreak.

  17. 'Finish the tournament in style'published at 22:13 Greenwich Mean Time 5 March 2019

    England v Japan (22:25 GMT)

More from Phil Neville speaking to BBC: "I am most excited about this match than any other in the tournament to be honest.

"There is a real freshness and excitement from the players. We have real strength in depth on the bench too.

"I want to see a good performance. I want us to come out the blocks flying. We have so much energy and freshness.

"We are playing against one of the best teams in the tournament. We will play Japan again at the World Cup too. The challenge is to finish the tournament in style."

In training you go head-to-head really competitively. But whoever gets the shirt, you're right behind them.

  19. 'Team selection not a gamble'published at 22:09 Greenwich Mean Time 5 March 2019

    England v Japan (22:25 GMT)

England manager Phil Neville speaking to BBC Sport on team selection: "I don't feel it's a gamble. I would have been letting myself and my players down if I didn't make the changes.

"It was always going to be the case - 10 days ago even. This game was the one I felt these players deserved to play. I said in my press conference that if I don't trust the players to play these games then I won't with whoever we are playing in the World Cup.

"The players we have got in the side are so experienced. Jodie Taylor and Karen Carney have over 200 caps between them. There is only really Beth Mead, Leah Williamson and maybe Lucy Staniforth who haven't got that many caps.

"I have told the players I didn't want them to see it as a trial game but to show they have earned the right. I have no doubt in my mind they will perform tonight. Players who have not yet had a chance to show what they can do will also come on."
