    Japan 0-0 Scotland

Scotland captain Rachel Corsie is gingerly getting back to her feet after being caught by a late lunge from Aya Sameshima while kicking clear inside her own penalty box.

A booking for the Japan left-back.

Mana Iwabuchi wriggles through a challenge to progress into the penalty area from the left. The angle is tight but she has a shot anyway. Easy save for Lee Alexander at the front post.

  3. Japan look for Scottish hat-trickpublished at 14:16 British Summer Time 14 June 2019

    Japan 0-0 Scotland

This is the third meeting between the nations, with Japan enjoying victories in 2007 and 2006.

Scotland are yet to score, losing those matches 2-0 and 4-0. However, the Scots have made great strides in recent years, reaching Euro 2017 and now taking part in their first World Cup.

Japan have won their past five World Cup matches against European sides and their only defeat in 11 games at the tournament came in the 2015 final against the United States.

It's that run from Jane Ross - it's a brilliant run. I don't think Hayley Lauder should've taken on the shot. It's a very tame shot

    Japan 0-0 Scotland

Jane Ross does well to chase down a long ball and the striker lays it off for Hayley Lauder, who has a pop from 20 yards. That shot lacks oomph and is easily gathered by the goalkeeper.

Keeping possession might have been the smarter option there.

Japan play really narrow. Scotland are hoping to create a really busy environment in there and make sure that passes are difficult for Japan

    Japan 0-0 Scotland

An early warning for Scotland as Yuika Sugasawa is allowed to get in behind and her cross from the left is volleyed wide by Emi Nakajima.

It looked like goalkeeper Lee Alexander had it covered.

Much louder in this Rennes stadium compared to Scotland’s opener against England in Nice. The Tartan Army have turned out in style as always with strips, tartan and novelty get-up everywhere. And fair play to the Japanese fans who appear to have picked up swathes of French schoolkids to cheer them on too.

Jane Ross scored a lot of important goals in qualifying. She also brings a bit more physicality to the front line. She's decent in the air. The Japanese team aren't the biggest, so if you can get good deliveries in to the box then I'm sure Jane will be looking to get on the end of those.

Even if Scotland can get a point - that's a good result. Because Japan have to finish against England. You don't want to count your chickens, but you fancy Scotland to beat Argentina if they're good enough to take a point off Japan.

  18. 'Of course we are going for a win'published at 13:50 British Summer Time 14 June 2019

    Japan v Scotland (14:00)

Remember, a top-two group finish guarantees a spot in the last 16, while four of the six third-placed finishers will also progress, so not everything rests on today's game - although a point of three would be most welcome.

"Our expectations are still the same, our targets haven't changed, we still want to try and get out of the group," said Scotland head coach Shelley Kerr yesterday. "To try and get out of the group we have to win one game, so our plan hasn't changed. Of course we are going for a win."

Two draws could be enough for second place but it's too early to open that arithmetic can of worms...

  19. Japan 'always thinking about goals'published at 13:47 British Summer Time 14 June 2019

    Japan v Scotland (14:00)

As far as Japan head coach Asako Takakura is concerned, this is a must-win match.

Final group opponents England beat them 3-0 back in March, so they won't want to go into that one chasing points.

"We must win and every player understands this," Takakura said.

"We're all together in this struggle. We've discussed what we have to do and overcoming the challenge will be fun.

"We want to play aggressively. We're always thinking about goals - we don't play defensively - but everyone will need to work hard and be focused."
