Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino: "The new stadium is a reality. It's an exciting moment in the history of the club. Everyone is going to realise the magnitude of the project.

"The best stadium in the world must play in the Champions League.

"It will be a shame not to be in the next Champions League. We are going to fight. I have no doubt we will be the Champions League next season.

"We have seven games left, five here, and that has to give us a boost."

It's an "I was there" night, with all Spurs fans present able to say forevermore that they were there at the start.

For those playing, the only concern is refocusing on being there at the finish - in the top four.

In six weeks, Spurs have gone from having (faint) title hopes to clinging on to a Champions League place for next season, and it's for that reason that they must win this first game back in N17.

Beating Palace won't be easy though, with the Eagles in fine away form.

Of the four current Premier League teams to have 'moved' this century whilst in the top flight (Southampton, Manchester City, Arsenal, West Ham), only West Ham won the first league game at their new permanent home.

Spurs will become the first club to play a Premier League home match at two different stadiums within a single season.

Harry Kane has scored 59 home goals for Tottenham in the Premier League - only Jermain Defoe, with 60, has more for the club.

Less than a month ago, Mauricio Pochettino was widely regarded as the leading contender for two of the most prestigious jobs in world football. Real Madrid and Manchester United were both being led by stop-gap managers, and the Argentine seemed set to be at the centre of a summer battle for his services.

Football moves quickly, though. Real and United both considered him, but needed to react to their changing circumstances quickly. Longer-term planning was shunned in favour of appointments - of Zinedine Zidane and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer - that just felt right at those precise moments. Time will tell if those were good decisions rooted in logic or sentimental appointments lacking in longer-term vision.

Either way, the events of the past few weeks have left Tottenham's manager at a crossroads.

Former Tottenham midfielder Rafael van der Vaart said: "It's amazing. I had goosebumps walking out at the new stadium. I compare it to Real Madrid and it's special but you need to win titles to be the biggest club in the world, so I hope they can achieve that.

"They have waited so many months but now they play at their new home ground for the first time and it's important the players feel it. White Hart Lane was always special but time develops and if you want to be a bigger club you have to have a bigger stadium. They have that now and the players are still the same."

On the importance of qualification for the Champions League: "They have to, and luckily Man Utd didn't win yesterday. Tottenham are a good team and they are in the quarter-finals of this season's tournament, and I think they will win the league one day."

Cardiff City manager Neil Warnock: "We've got to do our best in the game. I doubt any of our squad could get in either two of their first teams.

"They've taken the Premier League to another level. And you're not only putting your wits against the very best - possibly in Europe - but it's the highest odds in a game this season; 40/1 in a two-horse race.

"The bookies say they've never seen betting like it."
