Former Manchester United first-team coach René Meulensteen on the timing of the announcement: “I think it’s well thought-through. I think when Ole came in as an interim manager they did that with a clear purpose in the back of their mind, which I think was a good plan from the start.

“It settled everyone down. Ole was there from the start to make sure that he could create a positive environment in and around the club, which has happened and has also resulted in good performances and good results.

"It’s given a lot of time to sit down and speak about the current situation of the club and how to take it forward.

“Those meetings have taken place for sure over the last few weeks and that’s why it’s not a big surprise that the announcement comes now.”

Vinny Chahal: Ole apoint-MEANT to be! He has made fans dreamers again, I believe we could beat Barcelona and why not! Wow now that is a statement I never thought I would say.

Former Manchester United first-team coach René Meulensteen told BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast: “It's absolutely [the right appointment].

“I think the managers mentioned before, Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho, in contrast to Solskjaer is that Ole knows the clubs. He knows the club better than anyone else.

"He knows the identity that he wants the team to play and he also wants to responsibilities for a team like Manchester United to compete for the Premier League and other trophies.”

  7. Why appoint Solskjaer now?published at 10:45 Greenwich Mean Time 28 March 2019

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

Manchester United have gone early with the announcement of their new manager.

In the aftermath of Jose Mourinho's departure on 18 December, the club vowed they were going to take their time and wouldn't be confirming a new man in post until the end of the season.

However, when they said that, they weren't legislating for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer making such an unanswerable case to get the job himself.

After driving United into top four contention, and then engineering a famous comeback against PSG, the job was his. Then it became a question of timing.

There are contracts to be negotiated, including David de Gea's. The futures of Ander Herrera and Juan Mata need sorting given they can leave for free in the summer.

In any such discussion, United are bound to be asked who the manager is going to be.

If the name is obvious, rather than see it leaked into the media, better to deal with the matter head on, so everyone knows what the situation is.

  8. Solskjaer is a hero for everyone in Norway - Hegerbergpublished at 10:41 Greenwich Mean Time 28 March 2019

Speaking this morning, Norway’s Ballon d’Or winner Ada Hegerberg, who worked with Solskjaer at a football camp when she was growing up, said: “He’s a great hero for everyone in Norway. I don’t know if people realise how big it actually is – coach of United – and the results they’ve been given is amazing.

“He had a big impact on my younger career. I went to his camp and he gave me this big motivation to become something and I remember him coming on his bike, cycling to training, a normal, down to earth guy and that made an impact on me.

"He stays the same; he knows the values of seeing people. I remember there was this receptionist who got Norwegian chocolate from him and that doesn’t even surprise me, because he’s that kind of person.”

Veer Pattani: As happy as I am about Ole, I'm very concerned about the lack of movement on DoF! No proper structure sets up even the best managers to fail..

  19. Solskjaer already creating memoriespublished at 09:54 Greenwich Mean Time 28 March 2019

Whatever happens in the future, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has already created some memorable moments as Manchester United boss.

Who could forget that remarkable Champions League win over Paris St-Germain, with Marcus Rashford's stoppage-time penalty, controversially awarded through VAR?

The most dramatic ending to a game this season, and maybe there is more to come.

That Champions League quarter-final trip to Nou Camp to face Barcelona will hold special memories for the Norwegian after scoring the winner in the 1999 final there against Bayern Munich.

  20. Phelan likely to stay at Man Utdpublished at 09:49 Greenwich Mean Time 28 March 2019

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

Manchester United have kept Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Norwegian club fully informed of their plans and it is fair to assume there will be a ‘gesture of goodwill’ to the club following today’s announcement.

This does involve a payment and may also involve United playing Molde in a friendly, although this is yet to be agreed.

Today’s announcement does not cover Solskjaer’s assistant Mike Phelan, who still has a contract with Central Coast Mariners in Australia.

However, it is anticipated Phelan will also be staying on.
