“After their goal we created more chances to score but they defended very well, they are very strong defensively and they showed us that today.

“We knew it is going to be difficult but our focus is now the Europa League. We have the opportunity in the Europa League to do something important and we will try and do that.”

We had our chances to score, the first half was probably the difference in the result. And in the second half after their goal we had chances but they defended very well, congratulations to them for their work.

“We fight and try to win each match in the Premier League but every match is difficult and today is an example of that.

“We wanted to win today and we worked in the Premier League to have the possibility of a top four place, but today we drew and lost the chance. Now we are going to prepare for our match in Valencia.”

Brighton manager Chris Hughton: "That's more like us. It was a good reaction and a response to going a goal behind early in the game, people would have expected them to turn it into two or three. We had to dig deep.

"I was unhappy with the penalty decision, my feeling was that it was soft and I couldn't understand how he gave it. I saw it again and I haven't changed my mind. It wasn't a penalty, and a very poor decision.

"But we bounced back and showed plenty of character, We are lacking that bit of confidence in the final third and we had opportunities as they pushed for the win.

"Our responsibility is to try and get a result in every game. It's what we do, it's our responsibility. We are lifted by today and we will want to do as well as we can against Manchester City next week."

Arsenal defender Stephan Lichtsteiner, speaking to Sky Sports: “We didn’t take our chances, we had big chances and could have had two or three goals in the first half.

“Then it was 1-1 on the counter-attack. Unfortunately football is like this if you don’t score. We had the chances to score the second goal and we didn’t do it. Football is not so easy. We tried everything.

“We really deserved to win but we have big quality and big character, we will show that on Thursday [in the Europa League].”

On Arsenal's slim top-four hopes: “Until it is finished everything is possible so we will try everything in the Premier League.”

Dave Bookham: We got into the top 4 despite Sarri, not because of him. He tried his best to blow it, the others were just better at bottling it. He still has to go, regardless of this. Next year he won’t have Eden Hazard to bail him out.
