    Newcastle 2-3 Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp speaking to Sky Sports: "The way Newcastle played, it was just difficult to deal with in general. It's really difficult to defend all these situations and we cannot defend them, it kept them in the game.

"We had so many fantastic moments of football, we should've finished it off before they scored the second goal. It's brilliant, that's football, it's not important, what the boys did is unbelievable.

"It's brilliant, so deserved, it was a tough game against a physically stronger team than us. We had to fight, I couldn't be more proud.

"I was calm because I thought it's destiny, the boys try everything and you just have to try it, we were aggressive, tried to push but then we had the break around Mo and he had to go off.

"I said the only way is to play football, we have fresh legs and they were so honest in what they did. Newcastle, credit to them, they tried everything, but we have three points and have qualified for our final.

"You play the whole season so intense, we are not the best team in the world and we have to work hard. There are no easy games and now at the end of the season we have three games in six days. That's really hard. I didn't see anyone being nervous, we just tried it, no silly fouls, just really clear, it's an important lesson for us that we can deal with that like this."

It's easy to forget really that Virgil van Dijk isn't Liverpool's captain. In modern football terms he was a £75m bargain.

A mention to Virgil van Dijk who literally ordered Xherdan Shaqiri to take the free kick leading to the goal. Can't imagine TAA was too happy at the time, but definitely worked out for the best. A noteworthy contribution and shows the trust the players have in him on the pitch!

  6. 'We wanted to make a statement'published at 22:10 British Summer Time 4 May 2019

    Newcastle 2-3 Liverpool

    Liverpool

Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold speaking to Sky Sports: "It was tough. They did really well to get back into the game twice. We always knew it would be a tough place to come but we wanted to make a statement and show we had the mentality to bounce back after what happened in midweek.

"The team showed that spirit to come back, a lot of times this season we have come from goals down and we always knew we had the players to get the result.

"It’s all about the win, especially so late in the season and put the pressure back on City and hopefully Leicester can do us a favour on Monday night.

"We have to just focus on Barcelona now. We have a massive uphill climb, we showed great mentality to score three goals tonight. We’ve got a quick turnaround and we will go again on Tuesday."

On the title race: "It's a lot of emotion but we have to control it. It's very exciting, it's a special season but we want to finish it in style. Hopefully it goes our way."

Christian Barrow: Surprised to see no mention of the potential foul from Origi on Lascelles. He uses his arm to lever himself up and it prevents Lascelles from jumping. I think VAR would have overturned that.

Peter Shields: I'm a Newcastle fan and I was extremely proud of the Toon's efforts tonight. However, as we were already safe, I was actually pleased Liverpool found a winner as the title race deserves to go right down to the wire. Sensational stuff

Next up for Liverpool is Tuesday's Champions League semi-final second leg against Barcelona.

The Reds need to turn round a 3-0 first-leg deficit at Anfield to go through.

Barcelona actually lost 2-0 to Celta Vigo tonight but it was a very weakened line-up.

    Mark Lawrenson
Ex-Liverpool defender on BBC Radio 5 live

Newcastle gave Liverpool a very good game in the second half. I do think Liverpool deserved to win but they were sketchy at best in the second half and it looked for a long time that they were not going to get that winner. Another big goal by Origi to try and help Liverpool towards the title.

The Premier League table makes nice reading for Liverpool fans. The Reds go back to the top.

But if Manchester City, who have won 12 league games in a row, beat Leicester on Monday and Brighton next Sunday they will be champions again.

But a slip up in either of those games, and Liverpool will win the league if they beat Wolves at Anfield next weekend.

I often wonder whether people even like football when you see everyone just moaning about everything on texts and tweets.

That was a really entertaining game and keeps the title race going. Newcastle were probably unlucky a bit unlucky to lose though.
