England football fans clash with police in Portugal

As that previous picture, and common sense, show - most England fans have been having a fine time down in Portugal, I'm sure.

But those responsible for trouble in Porto in the last few days are "not true England supporters" and an "embarrassment to the team", the Football Association has said.

Two England fans were arrested in clashes with riot police on Wednesday night and two officers were injured. Bottles were thrown at Portuguese fans in a fans' zone as supporters watched Portugal beat Switzerland 3-1.

It was the second night in a row that supporters had caused trouble. A UK police chief has called their behaviour "completely unacceptable".

There have been some really good testing games in this competition and it will be hard again for England tonight. Time will tell if this works, but I think it will grow because of the quality of the teams in it.

  6. 'Kane's record under Southgate is phenomenal'published at 18:39 British Summer Time 6 June 2019

    Chris Sutton
Ex-Chelsea striker on BBC Radio 5 live

I'm very surprised he has left Harry Kane out. I think he will have benefited from getting the game under his belt in the Champions League final.

I know Marcus Rashford is better in an England shirt than a Manchester United shirt but he had a poor end to the season, and Kane's record under Gareth Southgate is phenomenal.

Harry Kane is on the bench tonight.

He has been directly involved in 34% of the 59 goals scored by England under Gareth Southgate (17 goals, three assists); a higher share than any of his teammates.

Netherlands v England: Raheem Sterling says 50th England cap is 'a massive achievement'

Raheem Sterling admitted he was "fuming" after his management company claimed he would captain England tonight. BUT HE DOES!

A press release circulated on Tuesday evening suggested the Manchester City forward would lead out his country on the occasion of his 50th cap.

But Sterling said such information had not come from him.

"I hadn't had a conversation with anyone in my agency," he said.

"I woke up this morning fuming. The first thing I did after I came off the phone to my agent was see Gareth [England manager Southgate] down the hallway, and I apologised to him for what had happened. I don't know where that's come from."

People will question the team selection but if you're in this squad you should be up to play at this level of football.

Gareth Southgate has obviously thought about it and we will see if it is the right decision with the result.

    Evening all!

Yes, it's Nations League semi-final time and while we are still not all sure what this tournament really is or what it means, we are all agreed - I think - that it's actually been great fun.

England play the Netherlands in Guimaraes for the right to play Portugal in Sunday's final.

    Lovely stuff.
