  1. 'The game was gone in 12 minutes'published at 17:22 British Summer Time 10 August 2019

    FT: Burnley 3-0 Southampton

    Southampton

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl speaking to Match of the Day: "For 60 minutes it was OK. We knew it'd be a difficult game here - they play very quick, very long.

"First half we played with the wind and second half we were against. The pressure after the first goal was high but for the next 12 minutes we lost the way we want to play and the game was gone.

"They had a fantastic save before the break and it's not easy to come back here when you're 1-0 down. We learnt that one long ball can kill the game and I think it did.

"It's a bad start for us but now we have to bring our heads up and focus on the next games."

  2. 'I'm still speechless'published at 17:20 British Summer Time 10 August 2019

    FT: Bournemouth 1-1 Sheffield Utd

    Sheffield United

More from Billy Sharp speaking to Match of the Day: "I'm still a little bit speechless to be honest.

"We have paid a lot of money for a lot of good strikers to keep me on my toes! We had chances today.

"We are playing in the Premier League now so strikes win you points. We have to keep each other sharp.

"I was itching to get on to freshen it up a little bit. The boys were magnificent. They have done themselves proud."

  3. 'They truly deserve that result'published at 17:20 British Summer Time 10 August 2019

    Alan Shearer
Former Newcastle and England striker on BBC One

I watched Liverpool v Norwich last night and and I know they were battered in the first half but they came back strong. It would have been easy for them to feel sorry for themselves. What we have seen with them and this afternoon with Sheffield at Bournemouth is that they are not going to go to sit back and they are going to go for it. That’s what we want. It would have been really harsh for Sheffield to leave Bournemouth without a point, they truly deserve that result.

  4. 'It was a really tight game'published at 17:17 British Summer Time 10 August 2019

    FT: Bournemouth 1-1 Sheffield Utd

    Bournemouth

Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe speaking to Match of the Day: "I am disappointed we didn't get over the line. It was a really tight game. It wasn't free-flowing from either team and I don't think we played to our strengths enough.

"Chris [Mepham] did well. He took his goal well and it was a good time for us. We hadn't created too many chances so I was pleased to see him score.

"It is always a concern when you are without a few key players. It will be something we have to deal with".

The law within the Premier League is that it’s you are either offside or you’re not so you can’t really argue it. The technology has improved, it’s not going to be 100% accurate but it is going to be consistent.

  6. 'It's good to make a winning start'published at 17:15 British Summer Time 10 August 2019

    FT: Burnley 3-0 Southampton

    Burnley

Burnley defender Ben Mee: "It was a good day, a good start. It was close in the first half so it was about who dealt with the conditions better and we put in a good performance second half.

"We stuck at it. They had a couple of chances first half but we produced a better performance in the second. Ashley Barnes took the first goal well, we got lifted from that and did really well.

"He's not underappreciated by us. He puts his body on the line week in, week out, and he scores goals.

"There was a lot of talk about our start last season so it was good to make a winning start, but that's all it is - a start. We've got Arsenal next so that'll be tough but we'll work on what we've done today and build on that. We'll go into the next two games full of confidence."

  7. 'We managed the game well'published at 17:12 British Summer Time 10 August 2019

    FT: Crystal Palace 0-0 Everton

    Everton

Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford: "We could have created a couple more chances but we got the clean sheet. There was a lot of wind, but we came away and didn't get beat, so we can build some momentum for next week.

"We need to pick up as many points as we can. We went down to 10 men and played well, managed the game. We knew Palace would come at us a bit more but we dealt well with it as a defensive unit."

On the red card: "Thought it was a bit soft but it's the referee's decision, we got on with it and kept our heads."

On two good saves: "I was reading the game well. I trust in my ability. The second one I was in the right position."

  8. 'We grew into the game'published at 17:10 British Summer Time 10 August 2019

    FT: Bournemouth 1-1 Sheffield Utd

    Sheffield United

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder: "It is the right result. I think we deserved something from the game. We grew into it. There was obviously going to be some anticipation.

"It has been a great experience and one we really enjoyed. We came here to get a result and that was the biggest thing. It is a very good Bournemouth side who have done very well in the last few seasons so we knew it would be tough.

"We should have gone 1-0 up in the first moment and we had a few chances in the second half - so did they. We handled it well. There were a lot of ricochets and bobbles around the goal and up steps Mr Sheffield United!

"I am delighted for him and everyone else at the club. We have to have confidence in our ability. It will be a tough season for us."

Crystal Palace striker Christian Benteke: "First half they had some great chances but we came back in the second half and deserved a goal. We played a great side, and if we look at our second half we have to keep going - we were sharper and stronger in the second half.

"I feel great now. I just want to score."

    FT: Watford 0-3 Brighton

    Watford

Watford boss Javi Gracia, speaking to Match of the Day: "What I know is that they played better than us and deserve the victory today. No excuses. It is the first game and we try to improve for the next one.

"The best news is that it is the first game. Sometimes it is good to wake up and improve. We need to do that for the next game.

"There were many individual mistakes. The first and second goal, they took advantage. We expected them to play three at the back and with that shape. We worked in the week to adjust well but after they got the win."

  11. 'I didn't expect that'published at 17:06 British Summer Time 10 August 2019

Brighton scorer Florin Andone, speaking to Match of the Day: "I didn't expect that if I am honest. it was an unbelievable match. We did very well. It is out first time playing with five defenders. We did perfect from the beginning to the end and we have to enjoy the match.

"We made another system and we have more possession and created more football. It is just one match but the way we start the season it sounds very good. Football can change very fast and we hope to keep the same level."

  12. 'Good to keep a clean sheet'published at 17:05 British Summer Time 10 August 2019

    FT: Crystal Palace 0-0 Everton

    Everton

Everton captain Seamus Coleman: "Away from home it's always good to keep a clean sheet but we would have liked to have won the game. We go home with a point.

"Jordan (Pickford) is England's number one for a reason, a top goalkeeper and great shot-stopper. You have to rely on goalkeepers at this level.

"The wind was swirling the whole game so very difficult to read long balls, but it's the same for both teams."

Sheffield United captain and late goalscorer Billy Sharp: "It's a great point. We are off the mark. We deserved something out of the game. I was the lucky one to get on the end of it.

"It was what I dreamt of last night. I wanted to get on the pitch and help the football club out. I am very proud of the boys.

"We all watched Norwich last night. They played very well but got beaten by Liverpool. No disrespect to Bournemouth, but we thought we could come here and get something form the game.

"We put bodies in the box and managed to create something. I'm delighted to help the team. If we can believe a little bit, we can gain that experience.

"The manager told us to stick our chests out be brave. It was a proud moment for me and the family."

Bournemouth's Chris Mepham: "It was very disappointing that we conceded so late on from a sloppy goal. We have to learn from it.

"I played Sheffield United last year and they were a tough team. They made it hard for us today.

"Philip Billing hasn't been here that long but has adapted quickly. He did really well. And Aaron Ramsdale was impressive, making some big saves.

"Hopefully we can improve on last season and push for a top eight finish."

"We have a new manager and he has got his vision of football. We have been trying to play like that. The boys are behind the manager and agree with his ideas.

"We have to be ready on the bench. The gaffer made two changes and we both scored. It is good to have good players on and off the pitch."
