And so that's it for the first Saturday of the Premier League season.

Manchester City kicked things off with a 5-0 thumping of West Ham at lunchtime, while Tottenham wrapped it up by fighting back to beat Aston Villa this evening.

Harry Kane, speaking to Match of the Day: "It was tough, they got their noses in front and made it difficult for us. Once Tanguy (Ndombele) got his goal we knew we were going to be full throttle for the last 10, 15 minutes. We were knocking on the door and it was only a matter of time.

"From there we really pushed on and won the ball back even higher.

"It's nice to get my first goals here, celebrate in front of the fans. I'm here to work hard for the team and when the chances come put them away.

"Liverpool set the standard last night, then City this morning so we know it's going to be a tough, long season - we got off to a winning start and there is still lots of things to work on."

More from Dean Smith, speaking to Match of the Day: "People forget a lot of the players were with us last season, just on loan. We had that continuity and it's not been as difficult as some think. It was important to keep the heartbeat of the team and we've done that.

"We want to be competitive in this league. Next week we'll be walking out at Villa Park - but we'll be doing so with zero points and that's something we have to work on."

Aston Villa manager Dean Smith speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "We were under too much pressure to start thinking 'maybe'. We had a couple of chances to make it two, I was quite pleased with how we played in the first half - we wanted to make their centre halves have to make decisions on the ball and we did that.

"The better team won on the day in the second half. We were perhaps unfortunate with the goals. Their physicality shone through in the end.

"The first half performance and our defensive organisation was very good. They're not Champions League finalists for nothing - they have a very well coached group of players.

"We're always learning lessons, today's game has set a standard for us. The game changer was Christian Eriksen coming on - which is why he's wanted by a lot of clubs around the world."

Mauricio Pochettino tells Sky Sports about the decision to not play Jan Vertonghen.

"With all the players fit you struggle to find a starting 11," said Pochettino. "We have more than 25 players and everyone needs to understand we have plenty of good players in every position. We can only play with 11.

"It's always the judgement of the manager and the coaching staff. After five years I'm going to play the players who deserve to play, there is not any issue but my decision today was play with Toby and Davinson to provide a good balance for the team."

More from Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino: "We conceded so early and we started to be confused in the way we tried to play and our positional game did not work. We didn't move the ball with the pace that we needed to find the space between the lines and break down the defensive line.

"In the second half we found different positions and the team started to be more relaxed and be more patient. We were very good. The second half with the same starting 11 in different positions we started to play. Having Christian [Eriksen] fresh with the quality he has helped the team achieve the victory."

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino told Sky Sports: "We conceded so early, we started the game well, had a few chances, but the first long ball we conceded.

"We were a bit confused and that is my fault, I'm the manager, but we made a lot of mistakes and didn't work well in the first half. In the second half we fixed the problems, our positional game was completely different and we moved the ball better. Its very important for us to start with a victory, we have a lot of work to do."

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith just said his side were under too much pressure to start thinking about getting a win with 17 minutes to go before Spurs levelled...

Tottenham only managed one shot on target in the first half, but by the end of 90 minutes they'd has 31 efforts in total - 10 of which were blocked as Villa defended heroically for long spells.

It's tough, the Premier League.

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino has been laughing and joking with the media on the way to his post-match interviews, he can afford to be all smiles after those late goals...

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith, speaking to Sky Sports: "I felt the little bits where we needed to affect the ball we didn't get tight or get pressure, when you keep giving it away and have to chase it become a hard game.

"It's a great learning curve and we knew it was a tough one to start with. Villa Park will be massive for us this season. I will be looking forward to getting there.

"We got a dream start but there is no doubt the better team won on the day."

David Randall: The talk will be of Kane and Ndombele however, as a Tottenham supporter, give the MOTM to Tyrone Mings. Outstanding today.

Jonny Micklewright: Norwich played attacking, entertaining football last night and lost 4-1. Villa put 11 men behind the ball and still lost 3-1. I know what team I'd rather watch.

Aston Villa goalscorer John McGinn speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "We were trying to hang on and that's what has cost us in the end. We probably invited them on too much.

"It's a massive step up for us, we can't get away from that. The tempo, the intensity, the physicality of it. We need to be a bit more braver."

On his first Premier League goal: "It's a nice feeling, I just kind of gambled and put it in the corner. It's a personal highlight but I'd swap it any day for victory today.

"We were punished for little things. It's a steep learning curve but we have a first home Premier League game next week and that's what we focus on now.

"We have confidence. It's an eye-opener. We need to be realistic and we know there are positives to take."

If you're one for niche stats...

This was the first match where both sides had a player score a Premier League debut goal since Scott Arfield for Burnley and Diego Costa for Chelsea in August 2014.

Tanguy Ndombele is also the first Tottenham player to score on his league debut since Eric Dier that same year.

Tottenham goalscorer Harry Kane, speaking to Sky Sports: "The tempo of the game, we came out n the second half with a high tempo, pressed well. When Tanguy (Ndombele) got his goal it was full throttle until the end. Thankfully a couple of chances fell to me."

On his second goal: "The touch leading up to a finish is so important. It allows me to go one side or go back through the defender's legs. You can use his body to bend it round him.

"It's the first game but it's always nice to win, at home as well. We know we have the quality, we have been in big games. It's down to us players to perform on the pitch."

Hishaam Habib: Eriksen once again proves he’s the ice in Tottenham’s veins

Andrew Morris: Jack Grealish was at fault for at least two of Spurs' goals. He seemed out of his depth and a half-yard short. I lost count of the number of times he was caught on the ball in Villa's third of the pitch.

Hugo Flaxman: So good from Spurs. Quality to burn bringing Eriksen off the bench. Dele and Son back soon. Kane already looks a better player for the rest. This could and really should be a better season than last.

Must say, I thought Tyrone Mings was immense in the Aston Villa defence today and he and Bjorn Engels were incredibly unlucky when the ball struck both of them before falling into Harry Kane's path for Spurs' second.

Dean Smith's side, for the most part, didn't look as if they were playing their first game back in the Premier League for four seasons.

In the second half Tottenham tweaked their play slightly and it just stretched Aston Villa. Villa were tired at the end but Eriksen was the spark that lit up the Spurs side. When he came on it changed, he was a game changer. The manager is going to be delighted to get three very important points there.

Chelsea Warrior: Villa have done themselves no favors. Getting deservedly punished for losing the ball in dangerous areas. I hope they learn quickly.
