    Southampton 0-0 Liverpool

Liverpool have been dominating - yet they almost find themselves behind. Twice.

Adrian dallies on Virgil van Dijk's backpass, eventually whacking the ball against the on-rushing James Ward-Prowse. Lucky boy! The ball cannons wide but could have easily ended up in the onion bag.

And then seconds later, Che Adams chases on to a quick, incisive ball forward but is just nudged off the ball - fairly - by Van Dijk.

    Bernard (10 mins)

    Marco Silva's face!!

Lucas Digne - who frankly is very good - launches a long pass downfield to find Bernard.

The Brazilian cuts inside from the left and drills home a low shot that perhaps Ben Foster should have saved.

It was a good strike though from the little man from Belo Horizonte.

  3. CLOSE!published at 15:09 British Summer Time 17 August 2019

    Norwich 0-0 Newcastle

    Teemu Pukki is on fire.

The Finnish player, who was the Championship player of the year, lets fly from eight yards but his shot narrowly drifts past Martin Dubravka's far post.

At the other end, Emil Krafth, making his first start for the Magpies, finds himself free on the edge of the six-yard area, but blasts his effort over the bar.

    Aston Villa 0-1 Bournemouth

Joshua King's penalty - which came after one minute and 40 seconds - is the earliest spot kick to be scored in a Premier League match since Manchester City's Sergio Aguero against Newcastle in February 2015.

  5. GOOD SAVE!published at 15:07 British Summer Time 17 August 2019

    Norwich 0-0 Newcastle

That was so close for the Canaries.

Teemu Pukki drives into the area and finds Todd Cantwell, who turns and shoots at the near post but Martin Dubravka produces a good reflex save with his foot.

Newcastle are currently under a lot of pressure at Carrow Road.

    Aston Villa 0-1 Bournemouth

    Micah Richards
Former Aston Villa and Man City defender on Final Scoer

On the Bournemouth penalty decision: It was a tough one but the keeper has took his leg. At first glance, I thought he dived a little but having seen the replay, I think it is a penalty. It is the worst possible start for Villa. The fans were all bouncing but now silence after five minutes.

    Joshua King

Can Tom Heaton redeem himself? Nope. Joshua King hammers in the spot-kick to put Bournemouth ahead.

Dean Smith, chomping hard on his gum, is pulling the sort of face you pull when smell something fusty in your kitchen.

  8. PENALTY TO BOURNEMOUTHpublished at 15:03 British Summer Time 17 August 2019

    Aston Villa 0-0 Bournemouth

Nightmare start for Aston Villa! And not how Tom Heaton dreamt his home debut would start.

The England keeper clumsily trips Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson... no doubt.

    Yikes!

Early chance for the Seagulls as Dan Burn gets his head to a free-kick from Pascal Gross - but his effort sails about two feet over the bar.

    Southampton 0-0 Liverpool

Liverpool out of the blocks quicker than Usain Bolt.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, back at his old stomping ground, surges forward before laying off to Trent Alexander Arnold. The ball is swung in but Saints clear.

There has to be a point where the Newcastle fans have to accept what’s going on.

Forget Ashley, they have to back the manager and the players. Steve Bruce is a good manager. That way the players will get onside and they’ll get where they need to be.

I think Villa will be OK. They are a Premier League club in stature.

They've got a very good manager. They’ve brought some good players in - Tom Heaton is an unbelievable signing. They need to be in the Premier League.

    Southampton v Liverpool (15:00 BST)

After last weekend's opening fixtures looked like they were played in November, torrential rain has been replaced by sunshine across the country today.

Short-sleeve shirts out in force at St Mary's. August has returned folks.

Liverpool do not have much of a turnaround between Wednesday's Super Cup in Istanbul and Saturday's trip to St Mary's.

I still think the Reds will win on the south coast though.

    Prediction: 0-2

After their latest European success in Istanbul during the week, Liverpool are on the road again and will match a club record of 11 Premier League wins in a row if they are successful in this one. They certainly started well last week by putting four past newly-promoted Norwich in the first half at Anfield.

Southampton were disappointing at Burnley and could hardly face a more difficult opponent in their opening home match of the new campaign.

They've beaten them only once in the past 11 league meetings, a 3-2 victory at St Mary's in March 2016 in which Sadio Mane scored twice for Saints.

    Conor McNamara

Despite boycott threats, almost all the seats at St James' Park were occupied last weekend.

As a taxi driver said to me on Tyneside: "They'll always support the club - even if they sent out 11 wild animals wearing black and white."

Cue Norwich wry smiles at Newcastle's supposed lack of ambition. For now, the Canaries can only dream of spending £40m on a Brazilian forward. No Premier League club spent less this summer than Norwich.

If the opening night at Anfield was something of a write-off, Norwich will see this as their real kick-start to life back in the top flight.

    Everton v Watford (15:00 BST)

    Martin Fisher
    Match of the Day commentator

Defence became Everton's biggest strength last season, conceding just seven goals in their last 11 games. In fact, they haven't conceded at home since 6 February.

A clean sheet in last week's goalless draw at Palace was a solid, if unspectacular, start for them but Watford were truly rocked by Brighton, thumped 3-0 in front of their own fans.

It was their first opening day defeat since 2006 and is such a contrast to last season when they won their first four in a row.

Javi Gracia needs a quick response but Watford's lousy record at Goodison Park hardly inspires optimism.

Brighton v West Ham (15:00 BST)

    John Roder
    Match of the Day commentator

Manuel Pellegrini will be looking for a big improvement from West Ham after their heavy home defeat by champions Manchester City.

His opposite number Graham Potter will be hopeful Brighton can maintain their excellent start in his first home Premier League fixture, following their impressive victory at Watford.

Brighton managed less than a goal per match last season as they just avoided the drop, so to get three at Vicarage Road was hugely encouraging.

West Ham have lost both their previous Premier League visits to Sussex and haven't beaten Brighton since the Seagulls were promoted. This weekend would be a good time to condemn that fact to history.
