Everton are keen to sign Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo.

Harry Maguire’s arrival at Old Trafford means United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has seven central defenders in his squad.

Everton inquired about Chris Smalling yesterday but that interest was rebuffed.

Now the Merseysiders have come back for Rojo, who was given a new contract in March 2018, which runs to 2021, and are hopeful of concluding a deal.

Meanwhile, it is understood United have ended talks over signing Juventus’ veteran striker Mario Mandzukic.

United were considering making an offer for the Croat as they look to plug the gap created by Romelu Lukaku’s impending £74m exit for Inter Milan but have decided the financial demands were excessive for a 33-year-old.

  8. Mane could face Norwichpublished at 13:11 British Summer Time 8 August 2019

    Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp says Sadio Mane could be involved in the game against Norwich on Friday despite missing most of pre-season.

"He looks fit. Yesterday was the first session with the team. He looks absolutely OK. Yes, he's an option.

"We have a lot of options, a lot of different line ups - no player gave me a reason to leave him out, so we have hard decisions on a squad. We have to stay as the team that nobody wants to play against.

"The atmosphere will be good. Our crowd will be waiting for us and we have been waiting for our fans. It's a while since we played at Anfield. But we have to be 'in' the season, always on our toes. Be 100 per cent and create an atmosphere which only Anfield can create."

Shrewsbury Town have signed Millwall striker Steve Morison until the end of the season.

The 35-year-old joined the League One side on a season-long loan earlier this summer but making the deal permanent means they can now add another loan signing.

Morison scored 32 goals in 169 league appearances in what was his third spell with the Lions.

  12. 'Not likely to make signings'published at 13:04 British Summer Time 8 August 2019

    Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp on whether Liverpool have been offered a deal for Philippe Coutinho: "No answer. How we deal with these things in the past gives us the opportunity to make no comment."

And asked whether Liverpool will be making any signings today: “Not likely so if you have something else to do, go and do it."

  16. 'Turn good window into game changing one'published at 12:58 British Summer Time 8 August 2019

    Everton

Dave Downie, The Blue Room Podcast: "We wait with baited breath to see if Everton can turn a very good window into a game changing one.

"Wilfried Zaha would undoubtedly be the statement signing that Farhad Moshiri has craved since he invested in the club in 2016. A front three of the Ivorian, Moise Kean and Richarlison would surely see Everton produce a genuine challenge to the top 6 this season.

"At the other end of the pitch though, at least one more centre back is crucial to keeping pace with the excellent defensive record of the last ten games of last season. Kurt Zouma has left a big hole to fill and although Yerry Mina is yet to really cut his teeth in the Premier League despite obvious talent, a season with him and Michael Keane without much in terms of back-up is a concern.

"The links to United duo Smalling and Rojo don’t really appeal, whist Zouma appears to be staying at Chelsea especially with the pending transfer of David Luiz to Arsenal.

"A huge day for Everton, but a huge amount of work to do in just a few short hours. Fingers firmly crossed.

Republic of Ireland defender Greg Cunningham is set to leave Cardiff City for a loan with Championship rivals Blackburn Rovers.

Cunningham, 28, has made only eight appearances for Cardiff since his £4m switch from Preston in the summer of 2018.

The former Manchester City trainee has been keen to gain first team football having had to play second fiddle to Joe Bennett, at the Cardiff City Stadium.

  20. 'I'm happy with the squad'published at 12:51 British Summer Time 8 August 2019

    West Ham United

West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini is speaking in his pre-game news conference ahead of Saturday's Premier League opener against Manchester City.

He starts by giving his thoughts on new signing Albian Ajeti.

"We lost three strikers from last year's squad, so he is a good striker to compete with Chicharito, Antonio and Haller for that position," he said.

"I'm happy because we have completed the squad in the way we wanted. We have two players in each position and the best way is to have competition. We have done what we needed."
