Nev Carman: Crying out for Andy Carroll to liven things up on and off the pitch. Let’s remember Monty Python, he could be the Messiah.

Anon: As a Brighton fan I am enjoying our new life under Potter, yet still an issue with sticking the round thing in that net hung on 3 poles!

  3. CLOSE!published at 54 mins

    Newcastle 0-0 Brighton

More boos than booze at St James' as Brighton have two more efforts. Neal Maupay has a powerdrive well blocked by Jamaal Lascelles before Pascal Gross fires just over from about 20 yards.

There is a definite whiff of that about this Brighton performance, I have to agree. All style, no substance?

They need a goal to show for their absolute control of this game.

Kev, Tenerife: Having totally and utterly bossed the first half I fully expect the Seagulls to capitulate in the second.

Aaron: Great seeing Brighton playing good football. It's just the same old story where we can't capitalise on the chances we create when we're on top.

Terry Pipe: Same problem for Brighton of poor final ball. We need to score and score soon or will suffer a late goal that we don't have time to come back from.

Bit of an injury scare for Fabian Schar but the Newcastle man is able to carry on in the end.

John, Northumberland: In answer to Anon (18:23), we were a club that tried. We might not have been any good but we always tried.

  8. Better in my daypublished at 49 mins

    Newcastle 0-0 Brighton

While we are getting nostalgic about the 'old' Newcastle, I had a look and 23 years ago today Newcastle won 1-0 at Leeds.

Here was the side that day...

Srnicek, Peacock, Howey, Beresford, Lee, Watson, Batty, Beardsley, Asprilla, Shearer, Ginola

Better right from the restart! Good move down the right sees Joelinton tee up Christian Atsu but he blazes wide.

Newcastle weren't exactly exciting under Rafa Benitez. But compared to this...

Maybe big Andy can come on second half and kick it up a notch.

Peter, Notts: Come back Rafa, all is forgiven, and sorry for giving Steve Bruce all the money we wouldn't let you spend. Yours, M.A.

James, Newcastle: Don't even have the energy to get angry watching Newcastle anymore. It's just so sad to watch.

Marc: Two questions, firstly how are Newcastle a Premiership club? Second how the hell does Steve Bruce continue to get management jobs?

    Rob Alderman: Newcazzzzzztle

Bob Moss: Newcastle v Brighton, dire game. Both teams don't deserve anything from this game. When will the league switch to 0 points for 0-0 draws.

Brighton's Dale Stephens completed 56 of his 57 passes in the first half, more than any other player. Newcastle as an entire team completed just 73.

Grahame, Cramlington: 24% possession at home against Brighton is pathetic. If they carry on like this, fans won't boycott the club because of Ashley, but because of unadventurous boring tactics employed by Bruce. Hope Keegan isn't watching, he might explode into one of his 'love it' rants.

Anon: I'm still confused by Newcastle fans saying they "don't recognise their club anymore" from what exactly? A club that had a short stint in the 90s coming close to winning the league but never did..... What have you been before and since?? Exactly what you are now. An average club with a big following...

Do stick your name on texts please...

You can understand figures like that away at Anfield or at Tottenham, where they won of course.

But home to Brighton? The Seagulls were excellent in that half and very good to watch but still...

    A reminder of Newcastle's possession so far this season - 38% v Arsenal, 37% v Norwich, 20% v Spurs, 49% v Watford, 25% v Liverpool.

They have had 24.2% in that first half.

Boos ring down from the steep stands of St James'. A real poverty of attacking intent from the hosts who have been passed off the park by Brighton.

The Seagulls will wonder how they are not two or three up.

  19. YELLOW CARDpublished at 44 mins

Good from Miguel Almiron to get into the area and stand up a cross but there's nobody coming at the far post, Brighton then look like moving away on the break but Javi Manquillo can only trip Steven Alzate and go into the book.

Ken, Newcastle: I don't recognise my club anymore. Playing at home to Brighton like we're away at City. Absolutely abysmal.

Paul, Cambridge: What is the point of Jonjo Shelvey?
