Marco Silva has just been in for his press conference. The Everton manager talked about the “nerves" of his side after falling behind to a “mistake” - when keeper Jordan Pickford couldn’t prevent an Oliver Norwood corner sailing over his head and going in off defender Yerry Mina.

He struggled to explain why they were so nervous and talked of needing to show “strong personality” on the pitch. I asked him what sort of character(s) they had in the dressing room and he said it was up to him to bring out the personality in them. I also asked whether sports psychology would help and he answered bluntly “we have the conditions inside our club to resolve the situation”. That was me told!

Matt L: This game is there for the taking. Brighton need to find that killer pass to breakthrough then we'll see what character Newcastle have.

LD: Worst I have seen Newcastle play in a very long time.

    Everton 0-2 Sheffield United

    Sheffield United

Sheffield United centre-back Phil Jagielka, speaking to Sky: “It was always going to be a day of mixed emotions for me. It was obviously fantastic to get the applause and the ovation at the start of the match. It was the perfect day for me.

“Everton have been on a fantastic run – especially at home. It was up to us to keep things tight for as long as possible. The first goal was quite fortunate but luckily we managed to get the second goal.

“We all stood side by side to get the blocks and headers in. Having something to hold on to [in the second half] is a huge help.

“Whether they like it or not [Everton] are still in a bit of a transitional period. Thankfully for us they didn’t really have their shooting boots on today, which means we come away with the clean sheet.”

Credit where it's due, this Brighton side under Graham Potter are unrecognisable from last season. Fluid midfield, overlapping defenders, triangles and patient possession. Easy on the eye and utterly in control.

Criticism where it's due, this Newcastle side under Steve Bruce have been awful so far.

Anthony Middleton: Newcastle showing exactly why they have the awful stat of being the team with the least possession in the league so far. Getting bossed in midfield by Brighton and defending flanks poorly. Worrying times.

Ben Stephenson: If this is a barometer of Newcastle's season; they will finish bottom by a long way. Playing at a pedestrian pace, no tactical affinity and zero communication.

  11. CLOSE!published at 31 mins

    Newcastle 0-0 Brighton

Newcastle have been a mess but they so nearly take the lead from a corner, Joelinton gets free inside the area and flicks a header wide.

Chris Wilder has just raised a few smiles in the Everton press room. The Sheffield United boss is known for being publicly harsh on his side, none more so than just now when he described them as “possibly the poorest we’ve played this season” when out of possession.

He even admitted Phil Jagielka had to remind Wilder in the dressing room that they’d just won! Amusing press conference. Playing down the performance is clearly just his style, but his players deserve plenty of credit. They’ll receive it from the rest off us. Here’s Marco Silva now…

Brighton are mincing Newcastle every time they attack now! Davy Propper has the freedom of the stadium to charge into the box on the right, he cuts it back and Aaron Mooy, under pressure, screws a shot wide.

That's six efforts on goal for the visitors already.

    Newcastle 0-0 Brighton

Brighton have been watching Chris Wilder - as Adam Webster marauds down the right from centre-back and cuts it across for Neal Maupay, he has a swing at it but can't get a clean shot away.

He has Steven Alzate free as well but can't find him either. It's all Brighton. Newcastle are so, so limited in their approach.

Mike Lee: With the current atmosphere around the club, and the general lack of tactics, it's hard to see how playing at home is an advantage for Newcastle.

David Ljunggren: Less than 20 minutes in and Shelvey has gone missing again. I cannot think what Ki must have done to irritate Steve Bruce.

  16. CLOSE!published at 24 mins

Dan Burn crunches Joelinton on halfway. Proper man and ball challenge and he's allowed to go on.

But there is a chance for Newcastle! And a good one too. Import Miguel Almiron is slid into the box, he shoots early and hard with his left foot but it's close to Mat Ryan who saves with his chest.

Good save, but the sort of chance you need to be taking...
