I just asked Pep Guardiola what he was thinking after 20 minutes when the score was 5-0.

"Weird," he said. "It was not normal, five goals.

"The quality we have is a joy to watch. After 5-0 the game is completely different.

"We were ruthless. It was a lovely day in the sunshine for the City fans."

  6. 'Not good enough'published at 17:42 British Summer Time 21 September 2019

    Everton 0-2 Sheffield United

    Everton

Everton manager Marco Silva, speaking to Match of the Day: “It was a tough game for us. Of course we didn’t deserve the result but when you make mistakes like we did this afternoon you don’t get what you deserve.

“It creates some extra pressure and instability which you don’t need. Sheffield United played slightly differently at home than they do away from home, we need to try something different to get through.

“For the second goal it should have been easy for our defenders to clear the ball. The second half was bad – not good enough. We need to show more and try new things.

“Some individual performances were not at the level we expect, but that’s part of the game. The key moment for me was the mistake we made for the first goal, but I told them at half-time we shouldn’t panic. We need to show personality to turn these games around.”

“[Coming from behind] is difficult for us. When the result is not good we need to show strong character and personality to change things. We had 55-60 minutes to change things today. We need to do more.”

It looks like Watford's players are not going to be physically hammered for today's debacle.

Quique Sanchez Flores: "The world has changed from the days where you would send players for a run in the forest after a game like this."

And now Brighton go close - they find striker Neal Maupay inside the area, the angle is unkind and though he gets a shot away, it's well closed down by keeper Martin Dubravka.

  12. 'It was just a ridiculous game'published at 17:37 British Summer Time 21 September 2019

    Everton 0-2 Sheffield United

    Sheffield United

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder, speaking to Match of the Day: “We’re delighted. It was just a ridiculous game. That’s possibly the worst we’ve played all season. We didn’t play anything like our best today but managed to win the game.”

“Everton put a lot of balls in our box, which opened us up a bit in the first half. Out of possession we were really good, the goalkeeper and our three defenders did really well. I think they had a million corners today.

“We rode our luck a little bit – we certainly didn’t have any last week. Everybody says that, to stay in the Premier League, your home form has to be spot on. We’ve reversed that thought process.

“We won’t be jumping from the ceiling tonight – I might be, but my players won’t be. It’s great for our supporters, who travelled in numbers again today and were unbelievable in their support of the players.”

On Prince Abdullah's takeover: “It’s not been an ideal situation off the pitch. Our job is to prepare the players in the best possible way. It’s a new dawn for the football club and let’s see where it takes us.”

Watford manager Quique Sanchez Flores has apologised to the Watford supporters.

"We work for the fans," he said.

"We are a pack. The strength of the pack is the strength of every person. The supporters are the most important. We are disappointed. We are fighting to solve the situation.

    "We are sorry."

  15. 'Extraordinary Bernardo'published at 17:34 British Summer Time 21 September 2019

    Man City 8-0 Watford

    Manchester City

Man City manager Pep Guardiola speaks to Match of the Day: "Do you think after what these guys have done for two seasons they have to prove something?

"We listened after Norwich but people don't understand that we can lose games. Sometimes I am surprised former players and pundits still don't understand that. We have to prove for ourselves that there is desire to win and go to the latter stages of the season and try and win the titles.

"Bernardo was the best player last season. He was extraordinary. I think he doesn't need to score three to get the credit he deserves but it's important for the team that many players score."

    FT: Man City 8-0 Watford

    Watford

Quique Sanchez Flores, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "We made a lot of mistakes. The result is very difficult but it's the consequences of mistakes in different ways. All the goals we conceded came from different things and it's difficult to play like this against Man City.

"We will take the best things from the Arsenal game and try to solve all the things from Man City game.

"I don't know what the mentality and psychology of the players is. It's true that we have regularly conceded lots of goals against Man City."

George, Essex: The argument that the league is broken because there was an 8-0 always makes me laugh. Throughout history there have always been better teams and worse teams. If you look at most teams biggest wins they're from 50 years ago or more. It just happens that at the moment Manchester City are really very good.

Matt: we all sure love a narrative. Last week City lose to Norwich and they are apparently in crisis. This week they beat Watford and it signals the end of the top flight being a competitive league
