This is a sign of how out of sorts Liverpool have been. Mane is through, with just Henderson to beat but completely slices his effort high and wide.

It came from one long, direct ball forward. A sign that the Reds may have to sacrifice some principles for the greater good this afternoon?

Every tackle is getting a reaction from the crowd now. Both they and the lads representing them really fancy this.

And so far, Liverpool have struggled to find fluency. They're not used to this.

Jordan Henderson is on the turf, going down after a clash with Jack O'Connell as he looked to close down the home defender.

Soon after, gets a free-kick after being fouled by Stevens. Fleck then charges in and looks to catch the Egyptian's arm.

Needless to say, both incidents raise more noise from the home crowd.

The crowd sense something here. Another lovely bit of football down the left, involving Stevens, sees the Blades take the game to Liverpool. It doesn't create a chance but it generates a mighty roar of approval.

He nips in to take the ball off Enda Stevens' toe in the box before poking a shot just wide.

Just before this, we had our first slip, with John Egan hitting the turf, but he showed some serious bravery to fling his head in to tackle Mane and stop him breaking.

Another spell of Liverpool possession sees them work the ball to Alexander-Arnold on the corner of the box. His floated cross initially looks like it might offer a tricky challenge to Dean Henderson, but the home keeper is happy to see it drift harmlessly over.

Another opportunity for the Blades. They've not had the biggest share of possession but all the best chances have come their way. Callum Robinson has time and space on the right to unleash an effort from 20 yards that flies past the far post.

They're not just digging in here, Sheffield United. Far from it. If you've not had the pleasure yet, I can gladly inform you that the Blades play some really nice stuff - an example of which is a neat bit of play just now from Enda Stevens, who exchange passes with a team-mate and is almost away down the left before his control just lets him down.

Close. Liverpool play some lovely stuff on the edge of the box to almost pick open the home defence before Georginio Wijnaldum's mis-hit shot deflects for a corner.

A bit of in-box pinball results from the corner but the home side survive.

Virgil van Dijk goes up with Oli McBurnie (no slouch in a tussle) and gets the ball, the man, the whole damn thing.

That's a match-up to watch.

The corner is one-ironed to the back post and met by George Baldock, but he can't get over it and his header drifts out of play.

Liverpool are in a game here. Alexander-Arnold has to slide in to cut out Enda Steven's cross and concede a corner...

They've not seen a lot of the ball, but boy do they pile forward they get the chance. They pour into the Liverpool half in numbers, with Callum Robinson in possession. They can't get a shot away, though, and another move of potential fizzles out.

Liverpool can't afford to give the ball away sloppily when in attack against a side with such counter-attacking intent.

This is such a difficult place to come and the weather is not going to help - it's pouring down. Liverpool will be happy with how they have started.

That is a right old tackle from Chris Basham, who slides in strongly to take the ball away from the charging Sadio Mane. The striker would have been in otherwise.

Oli McBurnie, his ginger beard bristling with fury, is not happy that a throw-in has gone Liverpool's way. He and his team-mates are well up for this.

Soon after, the striker is again away down the left, but this time he can't get a shot away as the visiting defence re-organises sharply.

Andy Robertson and TAA are halfway inside the Sheffield United half, and have been for much of the early stages.

The gap is huge to come up from the Championship to the Premier League. There are so many things to contend with like the physicality of the players, the fitness. It's good to see how Sheffield United are doing.
