McInnes changed up his team after Thursday's loss in Rijeka, but wanted to see more from some of those he brought in.

"When you try and freshen the team up sometimes after an away European game, you’re hoping you can get that freshness and impetus from the ones who come in," he said.

"One or two maybe a looked a bit sluggish, like they needed the game, which goes against what you’re trying to do. But you’re trying to keep a squad happy and give everybody the opportunity, and I think one or two never quite took their opportunity. Second-half, we were relentless with our work, but it wasn’t to be."

That was Derek McInnes' first loss to St Mirren as Aberdeen manager - a run of 19 games.

More concerning news for the Dons at full-time, with Sam Cosgrove, who sat out the defeat due to injury, also a doubt for Thursday's Europa League decider against Rijeka.

Aberdeen trail 2-0 from the first leg in Croatia.

"I don’t know yet, we’ll just need to see how that hamstring settles," McInnes said of the striker, who has scored eight goals in six outings this term.

"We’ll get him scanned tomorrow. Sam’s been in brilliant form for us but there are other opportunities for people to come in and do a job for us."

Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes reckons his team should have had a penalty when Ryan Hedges' cross struck the arm of Ryan Flynn.

"I think it was a penalty with last year’s rules and I think it was even more of a penalty with the rules we’ve been informed with season," he told BBC Radio Scotland.

"It could be a big decision in the game.We created some good opportunities, but sometimes you do need a bit of a break, and I still think it was a penalty kick. I think Ryan Flynn can get his hand out of the way, and it seems to me as if it’s clearly struck his hand, and I think it’s avoidable from his point of view."

St Mirren manager Jim Goodwin hadn't seen the penalty incident when he spoke to Chick.

"There was a big claim for it and it's a difficult one with the conditions and everything," he said. "If you're telling me that you watched it back and it was a penalty and we got away with one, then great.

"I'm sure Derek [McInnes] will be disappointed but Aberdeen are a terrific side and are still involved in Europe next week. We wish them well. I'm just glad we were able to hang on and get all three points."

"We needed players in and it didn't quite happen as quick as we would have liked but the new faces have come in and added quality. The pleasing thing for me is that they're taking on board what I'm asking them to do in training."

The stats show Rangers managed a whopping 34 shots this afternoon, 19 of which were on target.

Ofir Marciano made some excellent saves, but with Sean Mackie sent off, it proved a long and chastening second half for Hibs.

What a win for St Mirren and Jim Goodwin!

They had their backs to the wall for much of the afternoon, but Ilkay Durmus' well-taken first-half strike has sent Aberdeen back up the road empty-handed.

The Dons had a strong shout for a second-half penalty turned down when Ryan Hedges' cross struck the outstretched arm of Ryan Flynn, but despite a glut of possession and territory, the visitors created few chances.

Lewis Ferguson's header - excellently tipped over by Vaclav Hladky - and Niall McGinn's close-range strike off the post were as close as they came.

A thunderous win for Rangers and Steven Gerrard, albeit four of their goals came when Hibernian were down to 10 men.

Jermain Defoe's double gave them a commanding early lead, but Daryl Horgan clawed one back for Hibs before the interval.

Sean Mackie was shown a second yellow card 10 minutes into the second half, and from that point on, it was all Rangers.

Defoe completed his hat-trick - his first as a Rangers player - Alfredo Morelos came off the bench to nab a brace, taking his season's tally to seven goals in as many games, and Sheyi Ojo's deflected effort rounded off the hammering in the dying minutes.

Niall McGinn comes excruciatingly close to levelling the score in the dying moments. A cross swung in from Andrew Considine found the Northern Irish winger at the back post with all the time and space to fire a shot towards goal, but it smashes off the near post.
