Liverpool v Red Bull Salzburg (20:00 BST)

As expected, Joe Gomez replaces Joel Matip in the Liverpool defence. Matip picked up an injury in the Reds' win over Sheffield United at the weekend.

That is the only change for Jurgen Klopp's side as they start with the formidable front three of Sadio Mane, Mo Salah and Roberto Firmino.

The big news for Red Bull Salzburg is that in-form striker Erling Haaland is not in the starting XI. The striker missed the Austrian side's game at the weekend with illness and is only fit enough for a place on the bench.

Liverpool XI: Adrian, Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Van Dijk, Robertson, Fabinho, Wijnaldum, Henderson, Mane, Salah, Firmino

RB Salzburg XI: Stankovic, Onguéné, Hwang, Szoboszlai, Junuzović, Ulmer, Minamino, Daka, Wöber, Kristensen, Mwepu.

A nifty comic strip makes up the front page of the programme tonight, detailing Liverpool's Champions League story so far this season.

They lost their Group E opener to Napoli but will surely have too much for Red Bull Salzburg, given their formidable home record.

Nevertheless, Jürgen Klopp reveals in his programme notes that he tapped into the knowledge of ex-Salzburg players Sadio Mane and Naby Keita.

"Sadio and Naby have both spoken to me about how passionate their supporters are and told the boys they create a really inspiring atmosphere for their players," writes Klopp.

"This is cool because I know in these moments Anfield responds with its best face."

  9. The next Zlatan?published at 18:42 British Summer Time 2 October 2019

Liverpool v RB Salzburg (20:00 BST)

    The new Zlatan Ibrahimovic?

That was the question one newspaper asked in September after Norwegian striker Erling Braut Haaland announced himself in the Champions League with a debut hat-trick in Red Bull Salzburg's 6-2 win over Genk.

Maybe Ibrahimovic wouldn't agree - after all, there is only one Zlatan - but it is an understandable comparison.

The two Scandinavians, both well over 6ft tall, have an unwavering confidence in their own ability. Both have a reputation as prolific goalscorers.

But while Ibrahimovic is nearing the end of his football career, 19-year-old Haaland is just starting. He has scored 17 goals in 10 club games, including four hat-tricks, and will look to add to that tally for Salzburg against Liverpool.

Born in Leeds, and mad on Leeds United, Haaland grew up loving the English game. A chance to test himself at Anfield will be a significant moment.

This is the first time Red Bull Salzburg have played Liverpool and the chance to see their side against the Champions League holders was one that was too good to miss.

Peter and Dominic are a father and son who have travelled abroad to watch their side for the first time.

Chelsea midfielder Ross Barkley was "naive to be out before a Champions League game" after being pictured in a row with a taxi driver in Liverpool on Sunday night, said boss Frank Lampard.

Barkley reportedly spilled chips on the floor of the taxi and had an argument over money, with police involved.

"In terms of permission I don't expect to be asked for that. He hasn't committed a crime, apart from eating chips in a taxi," said Lampard.

Chelsea, who beat Brighton 2-0 at home on Saturday, and Lille both lost their opening Champions League games.

"I feel for the cabbie and I think he has been naive to be out before a Champions League game - he has admitted that," added Lampard.

It has been a beautiful day in Liverpool today and the travelling Red Bull Salzburg fans have been making the most of it.

Some 2,600 supporters are believed to have travelled from Austria and there was plenty of red and white around the city as they checked out the famous sights.

I bumped into this group checking out The Cavern Club. Among them are Rene, Gerhard, Ana, Mike, Gerard and Stephen and they are in Liverpool for the first time.

As for tonight, they are not too confident.

"I think we will lose but I hope 1-1," says Gerhard.

I mention their in-form striker Erling Haaland, prompting lots of excited chanting and one of the group to turn round and show me the back of his shirt.

"We have Erling here!" adds Gerhard. "Ours is a little bit fat though."

It's just a few months since Liverpool beat Tottenham in the Champions League final, with pre-season previews tipping all four English sides to go deep into the competition once again this year.

They could still - of course. But last night's public flogging at Tottenham, Liverpool's opening defeat in Naples and Chelsea's penalty blunder means that only Manchester City have made a good start.

    We go again...
