Lots of empty seats at St. Mary's as the teams come out, which is a real shame.

This is not because of lack of interest but there have been serious traffic problems in the area and many fans may still be on their way to the stadium.

I can't remember what I did for dinner last night but I vividly remember where I was when I watched England last play in Southampton in 2002.

Harry Kane has scored 18 goals for England while wearing the captain's armband - only Alan Shearer (20), Bryan Robson (20) and Vivian Woodward (23) have scored more such goals for the Three Lions.

  4. Southgate freshens it uppublished at 19:37 British Summer Time 10 September 2019

Good to see England manager Gareth Southgate injecting young blood into the side after Saturday's 4-0 stroll against Bulgaria.

England's qualifying group should pose no serious problems so Southgate needs to get his squad match tough ahead of the serious competitive action at Euro 2020.

England have a potent pair of full-backs in Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ben Chilwell and Borussia Dortmund teenager Jadon Sancho can provide real excitement.

We've stumbled on a cultural Venn diagram with Michael Owen and a few football fans...

I don't watch films either. Ive been to the cinema once. Pretty Woman 1991. It was okay

I so get Michael Owen not watching films. I last went to a Cinema in 1979. I was in Gibraltar. I was a little inebriated. I thought I was paying for a nightclub .....

  6. Where are the goals from midfield?published at 19:30 British Summer Time 10 September 2019

Ex-England winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

England do have an embarrassment of riches at right-back, Kyle Walker is not even here, what has he done wrong?

It is about who would play, you can play anyone at right-back. Come the Euros, I would go with Trent Alexander-Arnold and then Ben Chilwell at left-back but if one is not performing, there are replacements to come in.

The only concern is goals from midfield. If teams stop Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling, where is the Frank Lampard coming in?

James Maddison only got seven goals last season, he sets-up and makes chances but with his ability he should be getting 15 or more goals a season.

The teams I played in, David Platt and Bryan Robson chipped in with goals, we do not have someone breaking forward and getting past Kane.

  7. 'His goals speak for themself'published at 19:29 British Summer Time 10 September 2019

    England v Kosovo (19:45 BST)

England manager Gareth Southgate on ITV Sport: "Jadon Sancho is in to freshen up the team. We have good players to come in and it's a chance in the wide areas to refresh the group.

"His ability one against one to beat players, his decision making is excellent. His number of goals and assists at Dortmund speaks for itself.

"Our full-backs are all good players. We are very strong in that area."

Rather than moan that Maddison & Mount aren't playing why don't we celebrate the many options we have? Only three years ago we were saying we have no ball players. Now we have an abundance. Just wait until Foden gets in.

This is England's second match at St Mary's Stadium and first since October 2002, when they drew 2-2 with Macedonia in a Euro 2004 qualifier.

They also played at Southampton's old ground, The Dell, for one game in March 1901, winning 3-0 against Ireland.

    England v Kosovo (19:45 BST)

Kosovo boss Bernard Challandes on ITV: "Clearly, for the players, it was a dream to play at Wembley. As a coach a game is a game, perhaps to play here it's better for us.

"It was at first a disappointment but now we play against England, the stadium is very nice.

"Why not a surprise? We have to try."

  12. Sancho needs to grab his chancepublished at 19:19 British Summer Time 10 September 2019

Jadon Sancho is a brave lad, leaving Manchester City and going to a top club in Borussia Dortmund.

He has produced the goods but in an England shirt, he does not go past players enough. He runs at the full-back, checks back and passes it back to his team-mate.

He has to have the confidence now to beat the player and put the crosses in. He has his chance again, go and grab it.

It does not matter if you lose the ball, go at them. He has to understand why he is in the team. Tonight, if he runs at the player then passes the ball back to Trent Alexander-Arnold, what is the point having a winger in the team?

I still think he is settling in and we have not the best of him yet.

Johnny Magrinho: You can make the argument that Maddison is one of our best players at the moment. Is it a case that Southgate doesn't know where he fits in his formation? I'd say a home game against Kosovo is exactly the kind of game to try and find out.

Sarah Jenkins: How is Barkley still in the starting line-up? So wasteful! Maddison twice the player and would put it on a plate for the likes of Kane and Sterling. Poor quality of the opposition will again makes us look good and no questions asked

The England players are in the house. They’ve just arrived and are taking in their surroundings. They will all have been to St Mary’s before, but this will be a different experience for them tonight against Kosovo.

There is a really good atmosphere building. The Kosovo fans are making plenty of noise. There are around 1,900 in the designated away end, but there are expected to be a few seated among the England fans.

I would have liked to have seen James Maddison play. The Under-21s did not have a great tournament in the summer but in a Leicester shirt he creates and makes things happen. Mason Mount is another but Gareth Southgate prefers Ross Barkley. Can he get the service to the front three and unlock the defence?

Arron Newble: Marnus @ 18:57 you may be right. Maddison deserves a start. Barkley’s not even the best Chelsea midfielder in the squad!

Theo: What does Maddison have to do to get a game? We don’t need two holding midfielders in any of these qualifier

Richard C: I do like that tonight's game is at St Mary's. It would be awesome to see other England games around the country. Not everyone can travel to London.
