    St Mirren 0-0 Rangers

Ryan Jack isn't known for his goals but the midfielder comes within inches of a terrific opener, making space for a 20-yard dig that has plenty of power and is tipped wide by St Mirren keeper Vaclav Hladky.

Another corner for Rangers - their fifth of the match to St Mirren's none. James Tavernier delivers an inviting ball but Connor Goldson completely misses the ball as he attempts a header and is left with his head in his hands.

I think St Mirren have been really good. There’s no doubt that Rangers were going to cause some problems, have plenty of the ball, great passing, maybe even playing too narrow at times, put some crosses in. But St Mirren have defended really well, they’ve had a couple of counter-attacks and should have had the penalty.

  8. HALF-TIMEpublished at 13:06 British Summer Time 25 August 2019

    St Mirren 0-0 Rangers

Rangers have enjoyed plenty of possession but struggled to create clear-cut openings since Jermain Defoe missed a gilt-edged opportunity just three minutes in.

St Mirren have defended stoutly and could even feel aggrieved not to be ahead, with Jonathan Obika hitting the crossbar before having a penalty claim turned down.

It's all set up for an enthralling second half.

Halander actually trips, but he puts his body in front of of Obika, that for me is a penalty kick. He does trip but for me it’s a penalty.

  10. Penalty shoutpublished at 13:00 British Summer Time 25 August 2019

    St Mirren 0-0 Rangers

The home fans are howling for a penalty as Jonathan Obika goes down in the box under a challenge from Filip Helander. Clumsy at best from the £3.5million Swede, but the referee infuriates the Buddies by awarding Rangers a free-kick.

  11. Saints put bodies on the linepublished at 12:57 British Summer Time 25 August 2019

    St Mirren 0-0 Rangers

More danger for St Mirren as Jermain Defoe is clattered by Sam Foley right on the edge of the box. James Tavernier stands over the free-kick, but Sean McLoughlin leaps up from the wall to clear and Tavernier overhits his attempted cross when the ball comes back to him.

Magnificent stop from Vaclav Hladky, although he didn't know much about it. Another peach of a James Tavernier delivery is met by Scott Arfield with a header that hits the St Mirren goalkeeper flush on the face. A right coupon buster...

  16. HITS THE WOODWORKpublished at 12:48 British Summer Time 25 August 2019

    St Mirren 0-0 Rangers

Jordan Jones curls a shot a yard too high before St Mirren break upfield and nearly grab a shock - and lucky - opener. Jonathan Obika's cross from the right wing loops over Allan McGregor and against the crossbar before bouncing to safety.

  17. Durmus tries his luckpublished at 12:41 British Summer Time 25 August 2019

    St Mirren 0-0 Rangers

Delicious looping cross from James Tavernier on the right flank finds no takers. At the other end Ilkay Durmus - the St Mirren goal hero against Aberdeen - gets a shot away from the left-hand side of the box but it's well off target.

It’s a big day for Borna Barisic. We know he’s not the best defensively but even going forward the last two or three games that he’s played he’s looked laboured and doesn’t do things sharply. I think Steven Gerrard is going to say to him ‘You’ve got to show me you want in this time and are able to take a place’.

  20. Fighting their cornerpublished at 12:31 British Summer Time 25 August 2019

First corner of the match, James Tavernier swings it in and Scott Arfield flicks it on at the near post but it comes to nothing as Saints survive.
