1. Andreu takes high routepublished at 12:28 British Summer Time 25 August 2019

    St Mirren 0-0 Rangers

First shot at goal for St Mirren but Tony Andreu balloons his effort from distance high over the bar. An early sighter at least for the Frenchman.

    St Mirren 0-0 Rangers

St Mirren struggling to get out of their own half and string passes together so far. The two-week lay-off since their last game perhaps a factor in their slow start.

I have to say it looked off side, but what you have to do in the defensive side of it is play to the whistle. It’s a great touch, great pass from Arfield, Defoe’s movements are excellent. But the St Mirren defence switched off and wait for the assistant referee to make a decision and it could have been costly for them.

    St Mirren 0-0 Rangers

Big chance for Jermain Defoe. Scott Arfield's pass slips the in-form Rangers striker through and Defoe surprisingly fails to hit the target, firing wide from eight yards.

  6. 'Steady as we go' for Goodwinpublished at 12:15 British Summer Time 25 August 2019

    St Mirren v Rangers (12:15)

St Mirren manager Jim Goodwin is happy with the way his side have improved since a disappointing League Cup campaign.

"I said during the week there is no reason to change our side," he tells BBC Scotland. "So far so good and hopefully we can carry on the momentum.

"We are realistic as a staff and a club. We are up against a very good Rangers side no matter what changes they make.

"We have worked really hard at nullifying them and take advantage of their weak points. If we do that, we can give them problems, just like we did against Aberdeen."

  8. Gerrard expects stubborn Buddiespublished at 12:12 British Summer Time 25 August 2019

    St Mirren v Rangers (12:15)

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has been taking tips from counterpart Jim Goodwin's notes in St Mirren's match programme.

"Their manager has made it clear that they are going to get men behind the ball," he tells BT Sport.

"So, again today, we are going to need to be patient."

Gerrard says the only forced change was Sheyi Ojo, who picked up a knock in midweek. The other four are simply to freshen up the side.

  9. Hladky is 'best keeper in the league'published at 12:11 British Summer Time 25 August 2019

    St Mirren v Rangers (12:15)

Fraser "The Great Wall" Forster has returned to Scottish football on a loan deal at Celtic this week, but St Mirren keeper Vaclav Hladky has already cemented his position as the best goalkeeper in Scottish football.

That's the verdict of Buddies boss Jim Goodwin, who hopes the Czech can do the spadework to help his side stun Rangers.

Ahead of today's game, Goodwin said: "I think Vaclav is the best in the league. I'm not disrespecting any of the guys at Celtic or Rangers or Joe Lewis.

"I just can't get over how good he is. If he was three or four inches taller he'd be playing in the English Premier League."

  11. 'This club needs European football' - Gerrardpublished at 12:05 British Summer Time 25 August 2019

    St Mirren v Rangers (12:15)

With Rangers hurtling along nicely in the Europa League, manager Steven Gerrard is refusing to sacrifice his ambitions on that front to prioritise the attempt to halt Celtic's nine in-a-row bid.

Speaking in the Sunday papers, Gerrard said: “I want to coach in Europe. The players want to play in Europe in front of a full Ibrox and play in environments such as Legia. So, everybody wants it.

“This club needs European football – it’s a simple message. We are not in a position to quit on Europe and prioritise domestic competition."

  12. Goodwin goes with same againpublished at 12:02 British Summer Time 25 August 2019

    St Mirren v Rangers

Home boss Jim Goodwin sticks with the 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' mantra.

He fields the same starting line-up who gained the club's first win of the season last time out, a gritty 1-0 success over Aberdeen in Paisley a fortnight ago.

There's a place on the bench for new signing Junior Morias following the Jamaican striker's arrival from Northampton Town on Thursday.

  13. Stubborn Saints no pushoverpublished at 12:00 British Summer Time 25 August 2019

    St Mirren v Rangers (12:15)

St Mirren have only won two of their 24 league meetings with Rangers - drawing two and losing 20 - but have given the Ibrox men a run for their money in recent meetings in Paisley.

Last season it took goals in the final 10 minutes from Daniel Candeias - who was later controversially sent off - and Alfredo Morelos to see off stubborn Saints in a tousy affair.

St Mirren won the previous top-flight head to head on home soil - a 2-1 success in December 2011 over a nine-man Rangers - while they secured a last-minute 2-2 draw in the Championship against Rangers back in 2016.

  15. Gerrard's plea to fanspublished at 11:54 British Summer Time 25 August 2019

    St Mirren v Rangers (12:15)

Rangers head to Paisley on the back of a creditable 0-0 draw in their Europa League play-off first leg away to Legia Warsaw.

However, the shine was taken off that result with Rangers being ordered by Uefa to close part of Ibrox for Thursday's second leg for "racist behaviour - which includes sectarian singing" in the first-round win over St Joseph's.

Manager Steven Gerrard has implored the club's supporters to behave, saying: "I hope it's the last time we have to deal with questions on fan behaviour.

"We've got one of the best fan bases in the world. They follow us in large numbers home and away and they have got a reputation for being the best supporters in the world.

"So when you hear stuff like this it damages that reputation."
