Suddenly we've resorted back to a Kilmarnock formation. We've scored and the realisation that we're playing well so let's keep it tight for the next five minutes. Back to a 4-5-1 when they're causing problems.

  2. Cloudy with a chance of Meatball...published at 20:00 British Summer Time 6 September 2019

    Scotland 1-0 Russia

Here's the moment John McGinn, known to friends and team-mates as Meatball, scored his first Scotland goal.

The nickname is something to do with the shape of his head and the haircuts his mum used to give him.

  3. 'McBurnie a nuisance'published at 19:59 British Summer Time 6 September 2019

    Scotland 1-0 Russia

    Willie Miller
Former Scotland defender on BBC Radio Scotland

    Quote Message

Very positive play down the left-hand side again and the goalkeeper should do better. He fluffs it and it falls perfectly for John McGinn. Oli McBurnie is making a nuisance of himself as well. That's what puts the goalkeeper off.

GOAL Scotland 1-0 Russiapublished at 10 mins

    John McGinn

That'll do. Ryan Fraser fizzes in a cross from the left and Oli McBurnie puts the keeper under pressure at the near post. The ball spills loose to John McGinn, who knocks in his first international goal.

  5. HITS THE WOODWORKpublished at 9 mins

    Scotland 0-0 Russia

Good possession football from Scotland as Callum McGregor and Andy Robertson link down the left. Another corner and the ball falls to Stephen O'Donnell, looking very offside. The Kilmarnock defender has his back to goal just a yard out but he can only hook it against the post.

  6. Postpublished at 5 mins

    Scotland 0-0 Russia

Another corner. Another Callum McGregor in-swinger. It's deep but gathered easily by the keeper, who comes a long way off his line.

  7. Postpublished at 4 mins

    Scotland 0-0 Russia

First corner of the evening to Scotland and Oli McBurnie is just squeezed out as he tries to get his head to Callum McGregor's delivery.

  8. CLOSE!published at 3 mins

    Scotland 0-0 Russia

A wee scare in the Scotland penalty area as defenders hesitate and Zhirkov sends an awkward, looping shot onto the roof of the net.

  9. Postpublished at 1 min

    Scotland 0-0 Russia

Scotland go long from kick-off and an effort from Ryan Fraser is blocked before John McGinn drags a low strike wide. Positive start.

    Scotland v Russia (19:45)

More from Scotland manager Steve Clarke speaking to Sky Sports: "Listen, Oli [McBurnie] has come in and he's a young man. He's had a big move in the summer. He's determined to show everybody how good he is. And hopefully he does that tonight on the pitch."

Scotland need a big win here. They need something to catch fire. Because for the longest time it has been one let down after another. There's a fatalism among the fans now.

  13. 'Cooper has good experience'published at 19:41 British Summer Time 6 September 2019

    Scotland v Russia (19:45)

Scotland manager Steve Clarke speaking to Sky Sports: "The defence is always key. No matter who you play or what level of team you are it's always key how you defend. Liam [Cooper] has got good experience. He'll slot in there instead of Scott McKenna. Apart from that the back five is very similar to what it was in the previous two matches. So hopefully we can continue the way we worked earlier in the year."

The teams are out... Lots of empty seats inside the national stadium. It's certainly not an intimidating cauldron of noise.

    National anthems time.

  16. 'I think we'll be okay'published at 19:38 British Summer Time 6 September 2019

    Scotland v Russia (19:45)

Scotland manager Steve Clarke speaking to Sky Sports: "Russia are decent but we think we're pretty decent as well. If the lads can show what they showed in training this week then I think we'll be okay.

"You have to be positive. Looking at the shape of Russia's team it should be a five at the back. So we have to make sure our front three are pushing on and causing them all sorts of problems. And just try and get a bit of momentum in the game."

  17. Robertson in running for World XIpublished at 19:36 British Summer Time 6 September 2019

    Scotland v Russia (19:45)

Andy Robertson has plenty of reasons to be smiling, with a Champions League winners' medal in his collection and Liverpool flying high at the top of the English Premier League.

This week, the 25-year-old was nominated for Fifa's Fifpro Men's World11, along with 18 other defenders -with his direct competition at left-back coming from Alex Sandro of Juventus and Barcelona's Jordi Alba.

More than 23,000 professional players around the world were asked to choose their best team by Fifpro, the players' union, based on performances between July 2018 and July 2019.

Scotland skipper Andy Robertson says Steve Clarke has restored confidence in the squad.

"He has come in and got us all believing again and training and playing with a smile on our faces and getting us right for the games," said the Liverpool left-back.

"We have not had a big performance in a big game for a long time and we need to do that because that's the only way you can qualify for these tournaments."
