I look at Scotland and I see a very naive team. Players playing at a decent level but at international level they're boys. Not many caps, no international know-how. They haven't grown up as an international team, that could take a long time. They were up against a much better team tonight, but also a team with much more caps.

  2. Did someone say Nations League?published at 21:45 British Summer Time 9 September 2019

    FT: Scotland 0-4 Belgium

Thank goodness for the Nations League. That play-off next March is Scotland's only hope of reaching Euro 2020. Some amount of improvement is needed before then though.

Although we were thumped tonight it's good to come along and get an education and see players like Kevin de Bruyne.

  5. Few signs of improvement under Clarkepublished at 21:40 British Summer Time 9 September 2019

    Full-time: Scotland 0-4 Belgium

    Alasdair Lamont

Entirely predictable outcome as the world’s top team hand the Scots a footballing lesson without even hitting top form. There were a few promising moments from Scotland but four games into the Steve Clarke reign there are precious few signs of improvement.

  6. FULL-TIME- Scotland 0-4 Belgiumpublished at 21:36 British Summer Time 9 September 2019

Well, at least Scotland won't have to face Kevin De Bruyne again anytime soon.

The Man City midfielder assisted Lukaku, Vermaelen and Alderweireld and bagged the fourth himself. Is there a better player in the world right now?

He was helped, of course, by some shocking Scotland defending.

To make matters worse, if that was possible, Russia have scored. They're 1-0 up against Kazakhstan. Not that it matters, I guess.

    Scotland 0-4 Belgium

    Alasdair Lamont
    BBC Sport Scotland at Hampden

There is an air of weary resignation in the air at Hampden. Belgium are sauntering to victory, barely breaking sweat and Scotland can’t lay a glove on them. With a trip to Russia to come next for the Scots, things could get worse before they get better. If they get better. The Scotland fans are beginning to leave.

    Scotland 0-4 Belgium

Scotland are heading for their joint heaviest defeat on home soil in a competitive match. The last time they lost by four goals in a competitive match at Hampden was in 1973.

Again, defensively all over the place. It's the fourth one that comes after very, very defensive poor play from Scotland. But take nothing away from the quality of that finish.

    Kevin De Bruyne

He deserves that. A goal to go with his three assists, imperious stuff.

It starts with a long ball to Romelu Lukaku, who bounces off Stephen O'Donnell before passing to De Bruyne who works it onto his right foot and curls it beyond David Marshall.

    Too easy.

The free-kick comes in but it's cleared. Scotland pepper the Belgian box with another few crosses, but their towering centre-backs repel them all with ease.

  15. YELLOW CARDpublished at 79 mins

Scotland have a free-kick on the edge of the box after Thomas Vermaelen lunges in on Ryan Christie. The former Arsenal man goes into the book for his troubles.

As things stand, Cyprus are beating San Marino 3-0, while Russia are being held to a 0-0 draw at home by Kazakhstan.

It means Scotland sit fifth in the group, seven points behind Russia with 12 points left after tonight.

    No danger.

  17. CLOSE!published at 76 mins

Ooft, Toby Alderweireld's header goes close to squirming past David Marshall. The Scotland keeper clings on though.

Russell on for Phillips it is.

The terrifying sight of KDB running at Charlie Mulgrew...but the Man City midfielder can't turn provider this time.

It's all very, very flat. Johnny Russell is going to come on for Scotland, I imagine Matt Phillips will be the man to make way.

  19. CLOSE!published at 71 mins

    Scotland 0-3 Belgium

Kevin De Bruyne goes close with one just inside the box after an exchange of passes with Mertens. He deserves a goal, really.

  20. Postpublished at 70 mins

    Scotland 0-3 Belgium

Romelu Lukaku was clean through there but the linesman flagged for offside. Replays show he was onside, though. A let off.
