GOAL- Scotland 0-1 Belgiumpublished at 9 mins

    Romelu Lukaku

Oh dear. It's the first time Belgium have even had the ball in Scotland's half.

It came from Scotland's free-kick, too, after it's cleared Dries Mertens drives forward, slips it to Kevin De Bruyne who gallops into the box and crosses for Lukaku to calmly finish. Ruthless.

Comes to nothing. Good early signs, though. But it was the same against Russia on Friday.

Corner to Scotland. Robert Snodgrass' shot is blocked. He should have slipped in Stephen O'Donnell there who was charging down the right flank into the box.

The first thing you notice is Scotland's aggression. They're engaging higher up. There's no doubt that Steve Clarke is making sure that his team are not just going to sit back.

Scotland are the dominant side early on. Ryan Christie surges down the left, slips it to Andy Robertson on the overlap, but the captain's cross is gathered by Thibaut Courtois.

  9. 'Snodgrass gives us a bit more experience'published at 19:41 British Summer Time 9 September 2019

    Scotland v Belgium (19:45)

Scotland manager Steve Clarke has made four changes to his side to face Belgium tonight. Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of the game, the coach explained why: "We've spoken a lot between the games. We've shuffled one or two positions and brought one or two new faces in. Hopefully tonight you see a good reaction and a good performance.

"Not too dissimilar to how we played in Belgium. I thought we stayed in the game a long time and competed well. Robert Snodgrass gives us a bit more experience as well, which is good. Matt Phillips has worked hard in training and deserves his chance to start."

Do you agree with Steve Clarke that Scotland have players to cause Belgium problems?

Anon: Yes but we don't have the players to stop them from scoring.

Mark: If he means getting the whole Belgium team in fits of laughter, he’s probably right for once!

    Oliver: No.

    That's the spirit.

Andy Robertson is a world class player, but we'd like him to do it for Scotland. If he does, that'll inspire the rest of the team.

  14. 'Scots have huge potential' - Martinezpublished at 19:32 British Summer Time 9 September 2019

    Scotland v Belgium (19:45)

Whether it's genuine admiration, mind-games, or that his wife Beth is Scottish, Belgium boss Roberto Martinez has been very complimentary about Scotland this week. Despite winning the last two meetings in the past 12 months by an aggregate of 7-0, he's warned his players about Scotland coming out like a 'wounded animal' and said the first 15 minutes against Russia was the best he's seen the Scots in years.

    Errr, thanks, Roberto?

  15. Lack of goalscorer still a worrypublished at 19:29 British Summer Time 9 September 2019

    Scotland v Belgium (19:45)

Scotland have been lacking a goalscorer for well, decades. No player in the last 20 years -since Scotland last qualified for a major tournament - has managed 20 goals for the nation. Kenny Miller has come closest with 18. Ally McCoist before him managed 19.

In fact only Kenny Dalglish and Dennis Law -both on 30- have ever made it past 20 goals for Scotland. By comparison, Wales have Gareth Bale with 32, Northern Ireland have had David Healy with 36, Kyle Lafferty has 20, and Robbie Keane scored a remarkable 68 goals for the Republic of Ireland.

Oli McBurnie had the responsibility for goals on Friday, but he's been dropped. Up step Matt Phillips.

We have players that can hurt Belgium if offered the opportunity. They just have to show that belief. If they don't have the belief they aren't going to hurt anybody.

  17. 'Nerves not an issue' - Clarkepublished at 19:23 British Summer Time 9 September 2019

    Scotland v Belgium (19:45)

In the sorry aftermath of the Russia defeat, a couple of Scotland players - chiefly Andy Robertson and John McGinn - alluded to a bit of nerves and a lack of belief having gone a goal up. Boss Steve Clarke was also at a loss to explain why his players stepped off the pace so much.

But in his media conference yesterday, the former Kilmarnock boss was quick to dismiss any notion of the jitters, stating his team are 'mentally strong'.

  20. Win or bust for Scotspublished at 19:14 British Summer Time 9 September 2019

    Scotland v Belgium (19:45)

Let's be honest, there's probably not a man, women, or child from John O'Groats to Coldstream who think Scotland will automatically qualify for Euro 2020 after Friday's defeat to Russia.

Arithmetically it's not impossible, even in defeat tonight. But it would require a miracle. Oh well, it's the hope that kills anyway.
