I'll be honest, as the players walked out to torrential rain and strong winds at St Mary's, and the ball struggled to roll from player to player across the sticky surface in the opening minutes, I didn't expect too much from this Friday night fixture.

But Brendan Rodgers' ruthless Leicester never looked back after Ben Chilwell's opener after 10 minutes - impressively tearing Southampton apart to equal the 24-year-old record for the biggest ever Premier League victory.

It also means Leicester City have earned 20 points from their opening 10 Premier League games this season, which is one more than at the same stage of their title-winning 2015-16 campaign.

• Leicester have recorded the joint-largest ever margin of victory in Premier League history, matching Manchester United’s 9-0 win over Ipswich at Old Trafford in March 1995.

• This was Southampton’s biggest ever defeat in all competitions in their history.

• Leicester's win is the biggest-ever victory by an away side in an English top-flight league match in the 131-year history of the Football League.

• The Foxes are only the second team to establish a five-goal lead in the first half of a Premier League away game after Manchester City against Burnley in April 2010.

Brendan Rodgers speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "I'm very pleased to see our work rate, we scored some great goals and we were very hungry tonight.

"It was horrible weather but our focus was outstanding. I'm very pleased how we defended, and we were ruthless. I'm very proud to stand and be the manager of that team.

"We wanted to get the ball back quickly and attack again. A mark of the good sides is you don't let up. We wanted to show we're a good side and we certainly did that in the second half.

"We were ruthlessly simple in our game. When you're so many goals up you can easily slow but we kept focused. We want to be a top team and to be a top team you must be clinical.

"It was a very good team performance and we're pleased to keep a clean sheet. It's good for our goals for but the clean sheet is equally important.

"We believe in our work. The players are finding confidence and that bodes well going forwards."

Southampton

More from boss Ralph Hasenhuttl speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "That was one of the tough ones tonight.

"The performance was a disaster today and I have to apologies and take 100 percent responsibility – I've never seen a team act like this, there was no fight for anything.

"It was horrible to watch and everyone who stayed to watch is really a fan of this football club. Leicester were in every part of the game better than us.

"I’m a proud man but the way we play today is not the way I want to see my team play. We must get our heads up and that is my job in the next few days.

"I said we must play to the last minute but I can understand why the fans that left. We all must to do everything to pull this back.

"I haven’t looked at the [Ryan Bertrand] red card but it doesn’t make any difference in this moment.

On what has been said after the game: "There is nothing I want to speak of here in front of the camera – we keep that for in the dressing room."

Leicester City

Leicester forward Jamie Vardy talking to BBC MOTD: "I got made aware by Jonny Evans there could be a record. He told everyone at 6-0 there was a record and was adamant we were going to go for it. We were really hungry.

"We started really well, they went down to 10 men, we know what it is like, we know we had to keep going and it paid dividends.

"It sums the lads up, we want to be playing well and we know we can cause anyone problems and win games.

"We are taking each game as it comes, we know we can cause anyone problems. A long season and see where we are at the end."

Despite Brendan Rodgers playing it down, Jamie Vardy has admitted the Leicester players were well aware they were on course for a record win.

Jonny Evans apparently sprinted over as the Foxes made it 6-0 to tell the team to go for it.

Southampton

Manager Ralph Hasenhuttl speaking to Sky Sports: "It would be easy to say the red card after 10 minutes was to blame but I think it’s not normal to discuss every goal and every high of the result.

"I take 100 percent responsibility for this result today and it was no performance from my team this cannot happen in this way.

"The best thing in the stadium - beside the opposition - were the crowd who stayed in the stadium.How they act is more than we deserve and I apologise for this no performance today.

"I haven't seen the red card. The first goal started with a pass back, but I don’t know if it was a red.

"We made two changes in the second half and tried to last the half without conceding any more goals.

"We were not committed enough and with how strong Leicester were we just couldn’t defend against it.

"If you ask me if I'm shocked tonight, with every goal we conceded, what do you think?"

Ben Chilwell speaking to Sky Sports: "We push each other hard in training, the gaffer doesn't let our standards slip.

"Everyone in the league is waiting for Leicester City to slip. We're here and we're here to stay at the top of the league. We just need to keep working hard.

"It's nice to be at the top of the table, we really do want to stay there and there is confidence in the dressing room that we can stay there.

"Everyone is pushing each other, it's a really good squad and we just need to keep progressing."

Leicester City

Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers on Sky Sports: "We said at half time, keep your speed in the game and we have to punish them. It is tough for Ralph but we have to do our job and score as many goals as we can.

"The game is 0-0 at half-time we said. This is part of our education we have to come out of the boy zone and play like a man and respect the game. They are very talented and learning to be ruthless.

"Kasper is really happy, The only other keeper to have a nine was his father. We believe in our work, believe we can push over the course of the season. Our mentality is how we work every day. The players want to get better and improve.

"A great, great win and now we have to gocus on the cup game."

Nathan Redmond speaking to Sky Sports: "It was an embarrassing performance, the stuff of nightmares and especially playing at home.

"It just wasn't good enough and one of the poorest performances since I've been at the club and we’ll have to debrief that whole game from start to finish tomorrow.

"There were a host of things that went wrong - the red card decision and then the quick goal at the same time. We conceded goals far too quickly in the first half.

"We need to do much, much better. I think we had a few players out of position after the sending off and we tried to deal with it as best we could.

"There are the things we need to look at tomorrow but it was an embarrassing performance."

JChesterUnited: The quality of football these days is so poor. Leicester are a solid team sure, but they aren't 9-0 good, you only score than when the other team are awful. That was truly abysmal from Southampton, this league is a joke.
