Another decent stop at Vicarage Road. Gerard Deulofeu's dancing feet gains yards all the way up to the six-yard box but his shot at the near post is tipped over and wide.

A lovely flick from John Lundstram sets up John Fleck on the left. His cross finds George Baldock unmarked in the box but again Roberto Jimenez pulls off a decent save. He reacts quickly to gobble up the rebound too as David McGoldrick was lurking...

Manchester City manager Pep Guaridola speaking to Match of the Day: “Aston Villa played very well in the first half and we played not so good. They are newly-promoted and played with real spirit, attacking the channels well. While Wesley is so strong and good with the second balls.

"But the second half, I don’t know if we played good because we scored early or it was because we played differently, but we won. It was a special second half, we were another level.

On Fernandinho’s red card: "Yeah we will have a problem in one part of the field. But in principle I thought he would not play against Southampton in the Carabao Cup, he will be suspended for the next one and then he will be ready.

Manchester City

Ilkai Gundogan speaking to BT Sport: "After the first half the manager wanted all of us to step forward: it was obvious that something was missing and he mentioned that in the dressing room.

"It helped a lot to score after twenty seconds in the second half and add the second goal straight afterwards. I feel when we can score early we can be unstoppable.

"If I would be needed to play at centre-back I’ll try to do my best and help the team, but I think we are not there yet. We are a bit unlucky at the moment and of course Fernandinho's red card does not help us but I am sure we’ll solve that as well."

Aston Villa

Aston Villa goalkeeper Tom Heaton speaking to BT Sport: “The timing of the opening goal changes the complexion of the game. I thought we were solid in the first half, but when it goes to 1-0 they get a little freer and more relaxed. We would have liked to have held on and kept the game level going later into the game.

“But it’s a really good lesson for us. There’s lots of positives from the first half, it just would have been nice to have seen out the first 15-20 minutes of the second.”
