Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish says he wants to "get himself into the England team" following an impressive start to the Premier League season.

Grealish, 24, represented the Republic of Ireland at youth level but declared himself available for England in 2015.

He played seven times for England Under-21s, but is yet to receive a call-up to the senior squad.

"As soon as I got to grips with the Premier League, I feel I have been performing much better," said Grealish.

"Personally I want to get myself into the England team and finish with as many goals and assists as possible."

You can’t write Man City off. They have done it, they know how to win the title.

Last week against Crystal Palace they were at times back to their best. On their day they are an absolutely fantasic team.

Whoever Pep Guariola plays, wherever they play, they are great players and can handle it.

It is just over a year since Dean Smith’s first game in charge of Aston Villa, a 1-0 win over Swansea when his side were 15th in the Championship.

Now they are 12th in the Premier League and only two survivors from that Swansea game start against the defending champions - John McGinn and Jack Grealish.

With seven points from their last three games, it seems as if Villa’s new-look side and their manager are adapting to the top-flight but how will Smith prepare them for their biggest test to date?

Aston Villa head coach Dean Smith on Manchester City: "They are a top team with an unbelievable winning record in the Premier League over the last two or three seasons, but they've shown they're not infallible.

"We're not taking on a super-human team, although they look like it at times. It's a team that can make mistakes, and when they make mistakes you've got to punish them."

Manchester City - playing a day earlier - get the chance to reduce the arrears on Liverpool to just three points.

Defeat, if it is to be a defeat, should not detract from the exceptional job which Dean Smith has done in his 12 months in charge of Aston Villa.

Last October he took over a side in the middle of a sequence of one win in seven games which left them 16th in the Championship.

Now they don't look out of place in the Premier League - and it's good to have a club of their standing and stature back.

The 1990s were not the greatest time to be a Manchester City fan so maybe it’s a good idea that Aston Villa have decided to dress like they did during that decade today.

That means no claret and blue, and a debut for their new ’throwback' third kit, a green, black and red number - which might remind some of you of the days from 1993 to 1995 when Dean Saunders and Dalian Atkinson were tearing up Premier League defences... and they were sponsored by a yoghurt.

  16. From Blackburn to Roma?published at 11:43 British Summer Time 26 October 2019

I can't decide what my favourite football story of the week is.

It's either the news that Jack Rodwell - 21 Championship appearances for Blackburn last season - has been in Rome to discuss a move to Roma.

Or the two Liverpool fans who missed their side's Champions League win over Belgian side Genk on Wednesday - because they travelled to Ghent by mistake.

Rob, from London, and Lee, from Leicester, spent around £200 each on train and match tickets only to mistakenly end up 95 miles from where the match was being played.

Read more about their magical mystery tour here.

Man City v Aston Villa (12:30 BST)

    premier leagueImage source, BBC Sport

Ahead of the weekend's Premier League action, here's how the top of the Premier League lies...

Leicester catapulted themselves into second place with their demolition of Southampton on Friday night, though, Manchester City will return to second if they beat Aston Villa in Saturday's early kick-off.

Liverpool will hope to continue their unbeaten start at the summit when they face Tottenham on Sunday, while Chelsea face a tricky trip to Burnley in today's late game.

    And at the bottom...

The Saints' goal difference took a hammering last night which meant they dropped into the relegation zone, with Newcastle, who face Wolves tomorrow, leapfrogging them into 17th.

Watford sit rock bottom and will look to build on last week's positive draw at Spurs when they play Bournemouth at 15:00 BST, while Norwich are searching for a first win in four when they host Manchester United on Sunday.
