  1. 'Confidence within the Blades ranks couldn't be higher'published at 16:20 Greenwich Mean Time 24 November 2019

Sheff Utd v Man Utd (16:30 GMT)

    Steve Bower
    Match of the Day commentator

It's testimony to Sheffield United's impressive start to life back in the top flight that they head into this fixture above Manchester United in the table. It's also a reflection of the inconsistencies of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's team. Either way, it's a scenario few would have predicted at the start of the season.

Manchester United will be well aware of the need to show real desire and strength heading to Bramall Lane if they are to get any kind of result. The win at Norwich is their only success on the road in 10 attempts, an area that has to improve.

Chris Wilder's remarkable journey sees him face United for the first time as a manager, and confidence within the Blades ranks couldn't be higher.

Phil Jagielka makes his first Premier League start for Sheffield United since May 2007, a gap of 4,578 days.

The only player to have a longer gap between starts for a club is Wayne Rooney for Everton between 2004 and 2017 (4,837).

He will also make his 364th appearance in the Premier League - Sheffield United's other 10 starting players have amassed 196 appearances in the competition between them.

  5. 'It's another great test'published at 16:12 Greenwich Mean Time 24 November 2019

Sheff Utd v Man Utd (16:30 GMT)

    Sheffield United

Sheffield United's manager Chris Wilder on BBC 5 Live: "From a club's and players point of view, going up against Manchester United will always be exciting. My players have done great and their attitude is one that whoever they come up against, they will give it a go, they have to, that's what they want to do.

"It's another great test and it's another great day for the club. Another sell-out and another amazing atmosphere beckons. Hopefully we can push another giant of a club close and get the result we want."

Chris Wilder has just done brilliantly. The players know him, they trust him and it shows in how they play. He knows what he is doing, he will have many experiences and he has done great. You think coming in to the Premier League you have to spend millions of pounds and they have proved they haven't. I thought they would struggle but I love how they play, they are exciting to watch as well as successful.

It's a dank November afternoon in South Yorkshire but with around 20 minutes to kick-off the atmosphere is really building inside Bramall Lane. The floodlights are on and music is blaring. You get the feeling you are not going to hear the sound of your own voice come kick-off. There was a ripple of applause when hometown boy Harry Maguire led Manchester United's players out for the warm up. They remember his efforts here between 2011-14.

This is the first time Sheffield United have hosted Manchester United in a league fixture since November 2006 but Blades boss Chris Wilder says his in-form side will "play the game, not the occasion".

When the fixtures were released in the summer, few expected Sheffield United would be sitting above Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side in the third week of November.

"The players have adapted to this division magnificently well,as I knew they would, and the league table reflects that," writes Wilder in his programme notes.

Sheffield United had started just 14 players in 12 league matches before today - fewer than any other Premier League side - so it will be interesting how the team copes with two enforced changes.

The Blades already knew they would have to cope without goalkeeper Dean Henderson as he is banned from playing against his parent club.

But John Egan's injury playing for the Republic of Ireland on Monday has not cleared up in time and Phil Jagielka comes in for his first league start since returning to Bramall Lane after 12 years at Everton.

  12. 'The reports don't bother me at all'published at 15:53 Greenwich Mean Time 24 November 2019

Sheff Utd v Man Utd (16:30 GMT)

    Manchester United

With Mauricio Pochettino back on the market, so to speak, is Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looking over his shoulder?

At the start of Friday's presser, he joked: "Sorry to disappoint but it's not going be about Jose or Mauricio.

"No, it [the reports linking Poch to Old Trafford] doesn't bother me at all.

"I've got the best job in the world and I am sure if you're in a job or if you're out of a job and you're a manager, you'd want this job.

"So, it doesn't really matter, whatever happens around it. I've got to focus on my job at Man United, do it as well as we can.

"Obviously I speak with Ed (Woodward, executive vice-chairman), speak with the owners all the time about how we are going to move the club forward and that doesn't change if some other clubs change their managers."

  13. 'This is still Manchester United'published at 15:50 Greenwich Mean Time 24 November 2019

Sheff Utd v Man Utd (16:30 GMT)

    Sheffield United

Chris Wilder was asked this week whether this was a good time to play Manchester United.

    His answer:

"I think they've just won five of their last six games and won three away on the bounce last month, so I think that answers the question.

"This is still Manchester United. They still have world class players. We went over there to play a training match a few weeks ago and I think my players were surprised at the quality of the team they decided to put out for the game."

    Darren Fletcher
Former Man Utd midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

It's an interesting one seeing Phil Jones in the squad. There will be a few eyebrows raised. He will probably just try and break things up and keep things calm around him. There are also options to change the shape in the game, if it is not working. I think Sheffield United are fantastic, I think Chris Wilder is really smart, They are disciplined in their actions.
