Anthony Dargan: I honestly don’t want to be a boo boy but this Aston Villa team is poor. It’s also a lot weaker than the one we won the play-offs with. The spine of the team is so different. Abraham (who we were never going to keep replaced by a poor Wesley) midfield Lansbury couldn’t get near the side because of Hourihane, McGinn (injured) and Grealish (now out wide). Then signing Mings was massive but we haven’t strengthened. We sadly didn’t learn anything from last time we were relegated and just buying loads of players from rubbish leagues and wishing for the best.

Close to a second for Watford!

Abdoulaye Doucoure's curling effort bounces dangerously wide after Douglas Luiz got an important touch on it.

Bright start by Everton. They started by missing chances in the first-half and they've been started the second half by missing chances too.

  4. GREAT SAVE!published at 16:07 Greenwich Mean Time 28 December 2019

    Newcastle United 0-1 Everton

Everton's team talk may have been down to Duncan Ferguson - they've come out flying! Moise Kean looks set to score his first Premier League goal after reacting well to a rebound, he gets there before Martin Dubravka but the keeper saves with his face.

Kean then has another effort saved by the keeper. Everton excelling in the opening stages again.

The definition of madness is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. Dean Smith must clearly be mad...refuses to admit that his selection and tactics do not work.

GOAL - Southampton 0-1 Crystal Palacepublished at 16:06 Greenwich Mean Time 28 December 2019

    James Tomkins

It is Luka Milivojevic who takes the free-kick but he doesn't go for goal. Instead, whipping it into the box for James Tomkins, who nods it into the right corner and out of reach of goalkeeper Alex McCarthy. Nicely done!

    Final Score at St Mary's

Southampton have been targeting Wilfried Zaha. Nothing outside of the parameters of what’s acceptable, but there’s an obvious intent to make sure he that he doesn’t have a sniff. They’re also trying to provoke a similar reaction to the one they got out of him last year.

Zaha was sent off here for two swift yellows cards after sarcastically applauding the referee following a caution.

    Southampton 0-0 Crystal Palace

Nathan Redmond brings down James McCarthur on the edge of the box and Palace have a free-kick in a very inviting area.

    Luka Milivojevic will fancy this.

Bright start to proceedings again from Everton, Moise Kean dragging his man out wide and winning a corner. Away fans up in the gods enjoyed that.

45 mins to save the season for Villa?.......and for Smith to ease the pressure on his job.

    Martin the Vilian

Villa are doomed to the drop. How do we defend so badly when John Terry works with them? After the Leicester game the players had a meeting and said we play too open....nothing has changed!

When will Dean Smith realise that Wesley can't hit a barn door with a banjo, and he has a goal scorer in Kodjia on the bench..... is he the ONLY person that can't see it.

    Mark from Kingston Stert

'Fans' calling for Smith to go clearly didn't follow us last season. We're poor at the moment but without him we'd have been a mid table Championship team.

I really like Eddie Howe, but tactically today he got it wrong. He said they were better at the end of the first-half, I disagree, I don't think they were ever in the game. They were overrun and Aaron Mooy was the spare player and he absolutely bullied them. They're not creating much and they look vulnerable at the back.

It's a big period for Bournemouth because they're playing teams around them in the next six games.

  18. Taking the leadpublished at 15:53 Greenwich Mean Time 28 December 2019

Watford have scored the opening goal in three of their four PL matches under Nigel Pearson. Watford had scored the opening goal in only four of their first 16 matches this season.

  19. 'We're buzzing for Ali'published at 15:51 Greenwich Mean Time 28 December 2019

    Brighton 2-0 Bournemouth

    Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton defender Dan Burn, speaking to Sky Sports: "It is a very important win, Bournemouth are around us, we're on a tough run, so it was important to put in a good performance and get the result.

"A lot of results went against us at the weekend, we have put in good performances but not got the points, important we got the win going into the Chelsea match."

On Alireza Jahanbakh scoring his first goal for Brighton since joining for £17m in July 2018: "We're all buzzing for Ali, he has been grafting in training and we wanted him to do well. I'm glad he took his chance."

On having a second-half ruled out by VAR for a marginally offside: "I'm gutted, that's the third time I've been done by VAR.

"But if it is offside it is offside. I know it was only an armpit or something stupid like that but if that's how were playing then it is the same for everyone."

  20. Postpublished at 15:51 Greenwich Mean Time 28 December 2019

There's been almost as many offside armpits ruled out through VAR today than actual goals too.
