Everton just can't get their foot on the ball. Newcastle have upped the tempo and got the crowd going. Everton are second best at the moment.

James McAthur is absolutely livid as referee Andrew Madley awards a free-kick when Nathan Redmond goes down just outside the box. Wilfried Zaha sprints back to argue too!

James Ward-Prowse swings it in to the back post and Jan Bednarek should score. He ends up volleying it over the bar from inches out. Howler.

Gerard Deulofeu pings a deep free-kick into the box and Tom Heaton comes out to collect. He's under pressure though and ends up fumbling it.

It rolls out to Abdoulaye Doucoure on the edge of the box and he smashes it first time. But it's nowhere near the target and is skewed way over the bar.

Newcastle have flicked a switch. Jetro Willems does well again to pick out Andy Caroll and his shot is blocked by Mason Holgate.

That was clearly offside from Andy Carroll but he is causing danger for Newcastle. In fact, he was a little bit unlucky to be caught offside because he was anticipating the first cross.

This is what Newcastle fans have turned up to see today. Push the Everton defence back and get the ball into the box to Andy Carroll and see what problems he can cause.

Andy Carroll now beats two men to meet a cross with a brilliant header that goes right across the face of goal, Isaac Hayden volleys the loose ball over. Much better from the hosts and the volume has gone up a notch.

It was brilliant from Jetro Willems. Miguel Almiron should score really.

That will hopefully get the crowd going because it's been all Everton.

Where did that come from? Almost a cracking equaliser for Newcastle.

Jetro Willems with the superb footwork inside the box to beat two men and tee up Miguel Almiron, he drills a shot against the base of the post and Andy Carroll is there to smash in the rebound.

Alas, the pony-tailed one was offside. Correct call.

Still no shots at St Mary's.

Southampton with more of the ball but they aren't doing anything with it.

Naa, nothing in it. No penalty.

Conor Hourihane is getting involved. He puts another ball in the box and when Wesley goes down under contact from Craig Cathcart there are frantic appeals for a penalty.

Didn't look like much at first glance. They will check it over with VAR though...

David Ljunggren: Newcastle showing admirable consistency. We were terrible against Manchester United and we are terrible today against Everton.

Jonjo Shelvey weaves past Tom Davies in midfield and has space to run into. He lines up a shot from 25 yards but doesn't catch it true and pulls it well wide. A sign of hope for the hosts though I suppose.

Newcastle's front three of Joelinton, Andy Carroll and Miguel Almiron are making little impression on the game because there's no shape or balance to the side.

Jack Grealish is stopped in the middle but it falls kindly for Conor Hourihane. He swings a first-time ball into the box and it's on a plate for Wesley.

He nods it into the ground and Ben Foster pulls off a brilliant save to tip it around the post.

It's a really bold Everton line-up as their average positions in possession shows. Only Tom Davies (26) has any sort of defensive responsibilities in midfield. Almost a 4-1-3-2.

A James Ward-Prowse corner is punched away by Vicente Guaita but it's not cleared properly. Sofiane Boufal wins it back on the left but ends up fumbling over the ball and eventually gives away a free-kick.

Everton's movement is extremely good. There's never any pressure on the ball from Newcastle though, Everton are getting out so easy.

Aston Villa's Jack Grealish can't really get into the game at the moment. He is more influential from a central position and is out wide at the moment. He dictates their play and is key to everything for Villa. The next few months will be interesting for him with the England squad. If he continues his form he will be there or thereabouts for Euro 2020.
