The whole VAR thing is starting to confuse me. That's just too many phases earlier for it to be given offside.

  2. HITS THE WOODWORKpublished at 13:50 Greenwich Mean Time 28 December 2019

Brighton and Hove Albion 1-0 Bournemouth

So close again for the Seagulls! This time it's Yves Bissouma who is allowed to run through the middle of the pitch unchecked and get a shot away, his left-footed pea roller hits the base of the post and it's away.

Bournemouth are so weak through their spine.

Is skating around not less tiring than running, anyway? I speak from a position of 100% ignorance.

Aaron Mooy drives forwards and lashes a shot inches wide from 25 yards.

Scott: Regarding ice-hockey players and football fixture congestion. Ice-hockey teams routinely play back-to-back games. The difference is the average ice time is 20 minutes, so a player only plays a third of the game. You're on the pitch for 90 minutes without the frequency of play being stopped for icing, penalties, pucks out of play etc. So the physical demands are not comparable.

  5. SUBSTITUTIONSpublished at 13:48 Greenwich Mean Time 28 December 2019

Bournemouth make a double change - on come Callum Wilson and Ryan Fraser for Harry Wilson and Junior Stanislas.

    NO GOAL.

From the original ball in, which was about seven phases of play before the ball hit the net, Dan Burn was offside on an atomic level.

    I'm not a fan.

Bounemouth just couldn't get it clear, it's a poor defensive header from Phil Billing. Using every inch of his 6ft 7" frame, it's a decent finish from Dan Burn.

  9. VAR

Hang on - was Dan Burn a millimetre offside?

GOAL - Brighton and Hove Albion 2-0 Bournemouthpublished at 13:44 Greenwich Mean Time 28 December 2019

    Dan Burn (58 mins)

That's brilliantly taken! Shades of Peter Crouch from Dan Burn as he reacts smartly inside the box. Lewis Dunk's volley is well hit, into the back of Burn, he then swivels, takes the ball down with one touch and then smashes in with his second.

Ben Jones: Are we really comparing the physical exertion of ninth tier teams against Premier League players? Look at the distances covered, the speed of the play. I'm all for a congested football Christmas - the attrition is part of it. But let's talk sense here.

  12. Postpublished at 13:43 Greenwich Mean Time 28 December 2019

VAR had a look at that and said no, it looked a fair enough shout to me.

  13. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 13:42 Greenwich Mean Time 28 December 2019

Brighton and Hove Albion 1-0 Bournemouth

Better from Bournemouth, slick attack as they play in Dom Solanke into the area. He's stretching to get a shot off on his left foot, Lewis Dunk holds him off and makes the tackle.

The away fans scream for a penalty - nothing given...

    Karen Carney

Bournemouth don't score many goals, they are not creating much. They need to get Callum Wilson on soon. They aren't doing very well from what we're watching at the moment.

It would be good to see Ryan Fraser soon. I wouldn't surprised if he replaced Junior Stanislas soon. If Bournemouth need a goal going into the final half-an-hour too, I'm sure we'll see Callum Wilson.

If it stays like this for another five or 10 minutes, I'm sure Eddie Howe will be thinking of making changes.

  16. Postpublished at 13:39 Greenwich Mean Time 28 December 2019

Aaron Mooy pings in a lovely ball from out wide but it's headed clear. Amazed to hear the 'he's got no hair but we don't care' chant hanging on in there for another decade.

    Great longevity.

Joachim Aasan: Ninth tier clubs with extended FA Vase runs may experience severe fixture congestion in spring and play, what, four or five matches per week. They hardly have the luxury of massive squads either.

Mike: Newcastle manager Steve Bruce should know better than to speak out against holiday fixtures. Take it away and you remove the last remaining tradition of football in this country. And it’s a great time for friends and family groups of fans whom he should remember pay his huge salary.
