Neither manager has looked too chuffed with his team tonight. After Newcastle lose possession again, Steve Bruce is telling his side "to get on the ball" with a few choice expletives added into the mix.

Frank Lampard has been less vocal but keeps turning his back to the pitch with a grimaced look when his team's forays break down.

Anthony Middleton: Decent first half from Newcastle. Hit the woodwork and defended stoutly with a weaker team. Your move, Lamps.

Ben Thapa: Jonjo Shelvey looks like the focus of an episode of Quantum Leap: a dude who’s woken up accidentally on a Premier League field with no knowledge or experience, just hoping to make the best of it. MILES off the pace.

    Southampton 2-3 Wolves

    Southampton

Ralph Hasenhuttl on VAR's decision to overrule referee Darren England and award Wolves a penalty when Southampton were 2-1 up.

Should the referee have looked at the pitchside monitor?

"I was always a friend of letting the decision be done on the ground and not somewhere in Heathrow [Stockley Park is 2.4 miles from Heathrow]. This is why people come to the stadium to watch the game - if the ref had a look at screen then he would see he's right on his decision. It was not a clear wrong and not the time to overrule."

Have you spoken to the referee? "No. I will do later."

  16. 'Handball should only be given if it's deliberate'published at 18:33 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2020

    Man City 2-2 Crystal Palace

    Crystal Palace

More from Roy Hodgson on the overturned penalty: "When a ball is smashed across the goal-line it is very hard for a defender not to give away a handball. But this was even harder for the player to get out of the way as it hit his leg and flew up and hit his arm.

"In my opinion, handball should only ever be given if it is deliberate. If every time a ball hits you it's going to be a penalty then it is going to be very difficult to defend properly.

"I would have been really disappointed for a penalty to be given."

On the comparison with last season's victory over Manchester City: "I thought the performance this year was better. We had a much stronger line-up last year. A lot of those players are in the treatment room.

"In some way I’m more pleased with the way the boys went about their business than last year’s victory."

  17. 'It was not a clear wrong on the penalty incident'published at 18:33 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2020

    Southampton 2-3 Wolves

    Southampton

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl on VAR overruling the referee to give a penalty when Saints were leading 2-1:

"It's not a clear wrong decision. The referee was right. I don't know why they overruled. Cedric was in front of Jimenez. It was not a clear wrong decision. Cedric was in front of the other player so he had no chance to get the ball. You can give it but it's not a clear wrong. You can only give it if it's a clear wrong."

Did that affect the team? "If you are two-up and get the equaliser then sure, then from VAR overruling it's not mentally easy. Then you saw rest of the game we had big problems to fight back.

"On the first goal didn't defend aggressive enough.

"The opponents were strong. We played much better and we got nothing.

"A few things we are still missing in our game. They were clinical and killed us. But the way it happened today it's not easy to understand."

  18. 'We have to secure our position in next year's Champions League'published at 18:31 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2020

    Man City 2-2 Crystal Palace

    Manchester City

Pep Guardiola speaking with Sky Sports: "We have had 25 shots and I don’t know how many corners. We did everything to win the game and unfortunately in the end we lost two points because we could not stop the counter attack.

“But we have to continue. There are still a lot of games to play. We have to try to secure the place for Champions League next season.

"We must recover, go to Sheffield then after that we have the FA Cup and then the Carabao Cup semi-final."

Lifa Nati: Reece James is a special talent, he doesn't have to try. Abraham, Hudson-Odoi and Mount still haven't reached their full potential, still a lot of developing to do.
