That was a first half which never really got going. Chelsea were utterly dominate but the one outstanding chance came from Newcastle and Joelinton, he hit the crossbar and probably should have done better. His goal drought now dates back to August.

There's the whistle for half time. Pretty even first half with the woodwork denying Newcastle.

Willian's low strike is deflected behind for another Chelsea corner which, once again, comes to nothing.

The visitors need to be better from their set pieces.

Newcastle fans are fuming as Joelinton's break from a quick free kick is snuffed out by the referee, who felt it was taken too quickly and orders it to be retaken.

Willian's cross deflects off a stray boot and is just behind N'Golo Kante before Matt Ritchie knocks behind for another Chelsea corner. Again it comes to nothing, however.

The 45 minutes are up and there will be five minutes of time added on for injuries. Chelsea are the side looking the most likely to snatch a goal before the break.

Chelsea win a corner as Mason Mount's free kick is headed behind by Joelinton. Callum Hudson-Odoi whips the ball in but it is headed clear.

Almost half time, but expect a fair amount of minutes added on due to the earlier injuries.

Jorginho tries to lift the ball over the Newcastle defence, spotting Willian's run, but Federico Fernandez is alert to the danger and heads clear.

Should do better! Callum Hudson-Odoi clips a cross in from the right and Mason Mount is free inside the middle of the box but he directs his header over the bar.

Federico Fernandez heads over from a Jonjo Shelvey free kick. Chelsea have had all the possession but Newcastle have had the better chances.

"Ohhhh Martin Dubravka" sings the Gallowgate End, and no wonder. He's saved Newcastle on countless occasions this season, and that was a fine stop to thwart N'Golo Kante.

Chelsea just starting to make a few more inroads now.

First time I've properly seen Reece James in action and I'm very impressed so far.

He plays two sublime passes in quick succession, the first a defence-splitting ball for N'Golo Kante, whose shot is blocked at the near post and then a teasing cross that Martin Dubravka just beats Tammy Abraham to.

Tammy Abraham flicks the ball onto the bar. Inventive strike but it wouldn't have counted if he'd got it on target anyway because the flag is up for offside.

Gary: Is it me or does Andy Carroll spend more time watching football than actually playing?

Joelinton is winning everything in the air. The confidence seems to be back with him after his goal in the FA Cup.

Tammy Abraham has a pop from outside the box but you can see from the moment he shapes to shoot that it is going to fly over the bar and fly over the bar it does. No shots on target yet for either side...

Reece James now sends in a cross from the other side of the pitch and almost finds Tammy Abraham but the striker cannot control and Newcastle clean up.

The tempo has just gone up a notch or two with the ball getting up and down the pitch quickly.

Willian tries to work his magic on the left but his delivery is cleared by Federico Fernandez.

This is the type of game where you need two pairs of socks on and I just hope a bloke I saw earlier without a coat on was heading for a nice, warm hospitality box.

But after a quiet start that Joelinton header has raised the temperature on the pitch as the home crowd belt out "New-castle" in response.

For the record, Allan-Saint Maximin is the only outfield player to be wearing gloves.
