Tom Clarke's been booked for diving for Preston. The referee has had a round of applause, I don't believe it.

Preston have been the ones getting the crosses in, they certainly don't look like a side that's been struggling away from home.

    Cardiff 0-0 Preston

Alex Neil's biggest frustration here will be that his team have not found a path to goal, for they have controlled this game for the most part.

Preston are asking questions of Cardiff thanks to their slick football.

  5. Bacuna and Tomlin combinepublished at 13:00 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2019

Former Cardiff player on BBC Radio Wales

Bacuna's done ever so well in midfield. He can travel with the ball. He travels in the space, we think he'll lose it but he's got the composure to pass that to Tomlin and he is just off target. Good counter-attacking from Cardiff, good positive play.

  6. Cardiff counterpublished at 28

    Cardiff 0-0 Preston

Cardiff are struggling to get out of their own half at times here, yet they almost break away to snatch the lead.

Leandro Bacuna leads the charge before teeing up Lee Tomlin, whose low shot rolls just wide of the target.

A couple of times crosses have gone in and Flint and Nelson have been in exactly the right place to clear the lines for Cardiff.

  8. All Preston in first quarterpublished at 12:58 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2019

    Cardiff 0-0 Preston

    Michael Pearlman
BBC Sport Wales at Cardiff City Stadium

Midway through the first half and the visitors are unfortunate the game is still level.

Their high press is crushing Cardiff, who cannot keep the ball, and Preston have had four decent efforts on goal through Billy Bodin and Sean Maguire.

The Bluebirds are just surviving at the moment.

  9. Etheridge savespublished at 24

    Cardiff 0-0 Preston

More patient Preston possession ends with Billy Bodin taking aim in the box, but his shot is well saved by Neil Etheridge.

That is the closest we have come to a goal so far.

  10. Deserved yellowpublished at 12:53 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2019

    Jason Perry
Former Cardiff player on BBC Radio Wales

He knew exactly what he was doing there, Paul Gallagher. He's put his arm across Mendez-Laing to slow him down. The referee is taking his time to make sure he's getting the decisions correct and in fairness that one was.

  11. YELLOW CARDpublished at 21

    Cardiff 0-0 Preston

The first booking of the day goes to Paul Gallagher.

He brings down Nathaniel Mendez-Laing as Cardiff try to counter.

  12. Postpublished at 19

    Cardiff 0-0 Preston

Preston's Paul Gallagher has been scoring spectacular goals for years and he almost gets another one here as the ball drops to him outside the box.

Gallagher's volley is crisply struck but flies wide of the target.

Billy Bodin has tested Jazz Richards there, he's just showed Richards that he won't always cut back inside, a great right-footed cross and Maguire maybe should have got that back across for Preston.

Cardiff fans helpfully cheer "you don't know what you're doing" to boost the referee Mr Simpson's confidence there after he brings play back for the free-kick.

  15. Preston impressingpublished at 16

    Cardiff 0-0 Preston

The game remains goalless, but Preston are threatening to break the deadlock.

Paul Gallagher's good ball finds Billy Bodin, and his cross reaches Sean Maguire, whose header flies just the wrong side of the post.

  16. Postpublished at 15

    Cardiff 0-0 Preston

Robert Glatzel wants a free-kick deep in Preston territory after a challenge from Patrick Bauer, but referee Jeremy Simpson waves play on.

Cue bickering between Glatzel and Ben Pearson about how much contact, if any, there was.

  17. Scare for Cardiffpublished at 12

    Cardiff 0-0 Preston

Preston threaten again as Alan Browne feeds Sean Maguire in the penalty area.

Fortunately for Cardiff, Maguire's shot hits the side netting.

  18. A chance to impress for an overlooked Welshmanpublished at 12:42 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2019

    Cardiff 0-0 Preston

    Michael Pearlman
BBC Sport Wales at Cardiff City Stadium

This is a good chance for an overlooked Welshman to perform in Wales' national team's home as former Newport defender Andrew Hughes returns to south Wales.

Hughes has seen his former Exiles team-mate Regan Poole rise above him in the Wales pecking order, despite playing his club football at a higher level.

This is a good chance for Hughes to impress.

    Cardiff 0-0 Preston

That looks like a painful one for Cardiff's Leandro Bacuna.

The midfielder goes up for a header on halfway only to be cleaned out by his sizeable team-mate Aden Flint.

    Cardiff 0-0 Preston

Preston have the first shot of the day after a neat passing move which ends with a long-range drive from Billy Bodin.

His shot dips dangerously but skims off the roof of the net.
