You knew Steven Davis and Alfredo Morelos were going to come in after being rested on Saturday. Feyenoord are going to be a different proposition than they were at Ibrox, so this will be a tough one for Rangers

  3. Advocaat promises tougher testpublished at 17:38 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2019

    Feyenoord v Rangers (17:55)

When he had stopped waxing lyrical about his "most beautiful period" in charge of Rangers, Feyenoord head coach Dick Advocaat suggested the visitors will face a sterner test than they did when beating his side 1-0 in Glasgow.

"Rangers are a strong team, with international players in almost every position," he said. "With a manager like Steven Gerrard, he was a very famous player and has a big network, he is maybe able to bring in that extra player which they would maybe not have done in the past.

"Rangers showed in the first match how good they were as it was the home team that dictated the game. But away and at home, there is a difference, and that applies to Rangers."

    Feyenoord v Rangers (17:55)

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard is looking for his more experienced players to stand up and be counted in Rotterdam.

"I'm going to need the players to be brave," he said. "I need players who can handle the atmosphere, certainly early on.

"It's the reason why I rested Steve Davis at the weekend, so he could be fresh.

"We're going to have to stick together because we're aware this is a lot tougher than the task we faced at Ibrox."

Rangers supporters were advised to be at the de Kuip two hours prior to kick off. It's a message that has obviously got through. With less than half an hour to go before kick off, the majority of the 3000 in the away end are already here. Indeed, even over the din of the Eurovision techno music and some rather cheesy Feyenoord tunes, a fair few of the visiting support were in here a good hour or so ago. Will they still be in fine voice by full-time?

Make no mistake about it, this could be a huge night for Rangers in Rotterdam. Around 10,000 fans are estimated to be here in Netherlands hoping to see their team advance into the last 32 of the Europa League. The first time in eight years it would have happened.

For all the importance of the contest, there has been little evidence of anything of any great magnitude sweeping into the port city around 30 minutes south of Amsterdam. The majority of Rangers supporters have stayed in the Dutch capital, while a combination of that and some pretty dreich weather has provided a low-key feel to this one. During an earlier saunter through Rotterdam, there was not a Rangers fan to be seen. This will, of course, change, with 3000 of them with away tickets at the de Kuip tonight and they are already out in force inside the stadium.

Rangers are without able back-up Jermain Defoe through injury, so just as well they can rely on their Colombian front man, Alfredo Morelos.

The 23-year-old has scored in his last three Europa League games and could become the first-ever player to score in four consecutive games for Rangers in major European competition.

  10. Rampant Rangers; improving Dutchpublished at 17:18 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2019

    Feyenoord v Rangers (20:0)

Rangers arrive in Rotterdam second to Celtic on goal difference at the top of the Scottish Premiership, having won their last six games and unbeaten in nine since losing away to Young Boys in the Europa League. Steven Gerrard's side have also won their last three away games and are unbeaten in five since losing in Switzerland.

But, although they beat the Dutch 1-0 in the reverse fixture at Ibrox, some facts about Feyenoord may temper expectations in De Kuip.

Although still a disappointing 10th in the Eredivisie, they have certainly improved since Dick Advocaat replaced Jaap Stam and they have gone three games without defeat at home, winning two of them, since a 3-0 loss to AZ and are unbeaten in four games overall under their new head coach.

Meanwhile, Rangers have not managed a victory in their last eight Uefa Cup or Europa League away games, drawing five times, since beating Sporting Lisbon 2-0 in April 2008. They also lost 3-2 on their last visit to De Kuip in 2001-02 and have not won in Netherlands since a 1-0 success against PSV Eindhoven in September 1999, drawing one and losing two since then.

  11. Form points to Celtic winpublished at 17:15 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2019

    Celtic v Rennes (20:00)

Celtic's task later tonight is to do what they have never done before - go five European group games without defeat. But all the signals suggest a Rennes victory is unlikely.

The Scottish champions are unbeaten in three games against the French side, winning once, while tonight's visitors have lost to both Rangers and Celtic in their only previous away games in Glasgow.

Celtic, who lead the Scottish Premiership on goal difference from Rangers, are on a run of 11 straight home wins since losing to Cluj in Champions League qualifying and have won eight in a row home and away.

In contrast, Rennes are 11th in Ligue 1 after a 2-1 defeat away to Dijon at the weekend and are without a win in their last five Europa League games, losing four, including their latest three.

  13. Dutch forced to play third-choice keeperpublished at 17:10 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2019

    Feyenoord v Rangers (17:55)

Dick Advocaat has been forced to hand a debut to third-choice goalkeeper Nick Marsman, with premier option Kenneth Vermeer and back-up Justin Biljow injured.

The 29-year-old, a summer signing from Utrecht, has not played a competitive game since May.

The upheaval between the goalposts aside, Advocaat names an unchanged line-up from the side that drew 1-1 away to Groningen on Sunday.

  14. What do Rangers need to do?published at 17:08 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2019

    Feyenoord v Rangers (17:55)

    Scott Mullen
    BBC Scotland in Rotterdam

Right, this is far from straightforward, so stick with me.

It is possible that a win for Rangers tonight could take them into the knockout stage. However, they cannot rely on their own result.

Steven Gerrard's side are currently top of Group G with Young Boys on seven points with two games to play, Feyenoord and Porto both three points back. This is where it gets tricky...

If Porto win and Rangers win, it would be impossible for the Portuguese side to finish above the Scots due to head-to-head. However, if they win on the final matchday it could be possible that their head-to-head with Young Boys is better, thus complicating matters further.

To keep it simple, if Rangers better Porto's result tonight, they are through. There is also a suggestion a draw in both of tonight's games is enough.

    Clear as mud...

    Feyenoord v Rangers (17:55)

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard makes three changes to the side that battled to a 3-1 win away to Hamilton Academical on Sunday.

One switch is enforced - Jermain Defoe misses out through injury, with top scorer Alfredo Morelos leading the line.

Elsewhere, Steven Davis and Sheyi Ojo are restored to the visitors' midfield, with Scott Arfrield and Joe Aribo dropping to the bench.

  18. Old Firm on brink of Euro doublepublished at 17:00 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2019

It's Thursday evening, so it must be the Old Firm in Europa League action.

We can fair get used to this lark of having more than one Scottish club involved in the group stage.

With Celtic having already qualified for the last 32, it is a night of more significance to city rivals Rangers, but Neil Lennon's side will still want to win their group to avoid potentially bigger names dropping down from the Champions League.

Steven Gerrard's Ibrox men are first up at 17:55 GMT against Feyenoord in Rotterdam, with Celtic hosting Rennes at 20:00.

Stay with us for the build-up to both games, live commentaries and post-match reaction on BBC Radio Scotland and the BBC Sport website.
