Simple rule of thumb for VAR & offside, "should the linesman have flagged for offside" for things like at the Southampton game there is no way a linesman would or should flag for offside. Therefore it is not.

    Oxford United 0-1 Hartlepool United

A free-kick is teed up for Robert Hall, who curls it invitingly into the six-yard box. Oxford's Josh Ruffels gets his head to it first but it's always going wide.

He gets up from the ground in frustration - that was a chance.

  6. goal

    Fulham 0-0 Aston Villa

    Andy Townsend
Ex-Aston Villa midfielder on BBC Radio 5 live

Really good start from Fulham, turbo-charged compared to the first 45 minutes. I'd like a little bit more blood and thunder attacks to this cup tie. We've seen some nice technical stuff and intricate, pretty patterns but we need now for both teams to be a little bit more direct.

  11. YELLOW CARDpublished at 16:08 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2020

    Fulham 0-0 Aston Villa

Kevin McDonald sticks an elbow in on Henri Lansbury and goes into the book.

  12. CLOSE!published at 16:07 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2020

Preston North End 0-3 Norwich City

Very nearly a hat-trick for Adam Idah! The teenager flicks a header narrowly wide after more pedestrian defending from Preston.

A few clubs may be interested in taking him on loan this month, the kid has been brilliant today. Billy Bodin then has a good shot saved for North End in a lively start to the second half.

  13. Postpublished at 16:07 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2020

    Oxford United 0-1 Hartlepool

Oxford United's players were out early for the second half and Sam Long was in a heated discussion with the back four.

Mike: Dermot Gallagher said VAR is working exactly as expected and it is what all Premier League clubs signed up to. No.... it’s pure idiocy: no-one could foresee this nonsense where offside decisions are based on micro-millimetres. It’s rubbish: get rid of it now!!!

Anthony Knockaert cuts in from the right, sets himself to shoot on his left foot and fires it JUST wide of the far post.

Paul Collins: VAR getting unnecessarily used again at Southampton. I like VAR but it's getting used for everything by clowns who can't do their job right. Linesman are pointless in the game now when even the things that aren't clear or obvious are getting it used for.

    HT Cardiff 0-2 Carlisle

    Dafydd Pritchard
BBC Sport Wales at Cardiff City Stadium

There were boos for Cardiff from the few home fans here at Cardiff City Stadium as the players walked off at half-time.

You can understand why: they're losing at home to a League Two side 57 places below them in the EFL. Oh, and the Bluebirds were thrashed 6-1 by QPR just three days ago.

Contrast that sullen mood to the jubilation in the away end, where Carlisle's fans are having a great time.

There's a shock on the cards here.
