    Rochdale 0-0 Newcastle

    Chris Waddle
Ex-Tottenham and England winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

Steve Bruce will be delighted with the start they've had. I know it's very early in the game but it's been fairly positive and Newcastle are popping the ball around very well. Rochdale can't get near them.

    Jay Rodriguez

Jay Rodriguez follows up on the rebound as Chris Wood is left completely unmarked in the six-yard box after a bundle on a free-kick and forces a good save from Christy Pym.

All he has to do is tap it in. Quick VAR review, but the goal stands.

    Rochdale 0-0 Newcastle

    Chris Waddle

Good start by Newcastle, they are really moving the ball quickly. I thought Rochdale would've come out the blocks and hustled but they've actually shown too much respect to Newcastle.

Brilliant stuff from Blackburn's Adam Armstrong, who beats the full-back on the left and fires a dangerous ball across the face of goal. Nobody on the end of it!

  20. 'Excitement around the club'published at 12:25 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2020

    Rochdale v Newcastle (12:31 GMT)

Rochdale manager Brian Barry-Murphy speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "I've never seen such excitement around the club.

"We've had good cup exploits over the years but seems to have taken it to another level. The town was full of people waving us to the ground, so it was surreal, really.

"The team have come through together and even though they are young, they're all used to being around each other and they just seem to adjust to whatever comes their way.

"It's obviously a great chance for Newcastle to target a cup competition and it will look like a difficult time to face them in terms of motivation.

"We'll focus on causing them problems - which we believe we can today."
