James, Moorfields: As a Palace fan sitting in A&E, waiting to have glass removed from my eye, it seems both a fitting metaphor and my good luck, not being able to watch the match as planned...

    Woah, that sounds horrendous.

This is Crystal Palace's oldest ever Premier League line-up. And they've got the Premier League's oldest manager.

So much for youth. All in the experience?

Mark, Glastonbury: Is there a more deluded player than Zaha? Does absolutely nothing for 90% of the time. Constantly gives the ball away and is forever whining at his teammates when he's sitting on the floor after giving away possession. Palace want £80 million for him??

Leon Ip: Like to see Calvert-Lewin at Man Utd. I think after Ighalo he would be a decent replacement

Crystal Palace are yet to have a shot on target, although they did hit the post before that Everton opener.

I would say this isn't likely to be first on Match of the Day tonight, but then there are only two games today so it might well be...

    That's the break.

Everton in front thanks to that wonderful Bernard goal.

Wilf Zaha does well to scamper inside and lift a cross to the back post where Christian Benteke brings it down, lays it off for Patrick van Aanholt and... the left-back accidentally touches it with his other foot before making contact with his right, which inevitably means he skews his effort way off target.

It's greeted with ironic whistles from the home crowd.

    Hang about...

Looked a simple take for Jordan Pickford on the ground but he spills under pressure from Wilfried Zaha, who then thinks he's bundled over by Seamus Coleman in the box.

Gary Cahill clatters into the back of Dominic Calvert-Lewin after Everton clear and suddenly a load of blue and black shirts come sprinting halfheartedly together, throw a few limbs around and jostle for playground bragging rights.

All a lot of nothing, really...

Patrick van Aanholt almost sells Vicente Guaita short with a back pass, think the wind held that up a touch - Storm Ciara getting involved on Merseyside...

    Ian Dennis
BBC Radio 5 Live senior football reporter

Crystal Palace have not invested the money from selling Aaron Wan-Bissaka (to Manchester United), they'll probably lose Wilfried Zaha after the season finishes.

On this evidence, they seem to be a team in real need of investment.

  12. 'Back to basics'published at 13:10 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2020

    Michael Brown
Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder on BBC 5 Live

Duncan Ferguson gave Everton a back-to-basics reality check and since that moment they've had more desire and organisation.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been key to getting them into the right areas on the pitch and they've been so much better since that dire night at Anfield.

That's better from Palace, stringing a few passes together and getting Jordan Ayew to deliver.

Everton deal with the first ball, but it drops to James McArthur, who can only blast high and wide on his left foot.

  16. 'Everton in control'published at 13:04 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2020

    Everton 1-0 Crystal Palace

    Michael Brown
Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder on BBC 5 Live

Everton have controlled it well. The full backs are playing high and impressively. Bernard is causing lots of problems and Calvert-Lewin is using his physicality.

Really disappointed with Crystal Palace so far. They've got to come out and do a lot more.

Seamus Coleman is pretty much playing as a right winger now. He has time and space twice to try to pick out a team-mate but can't beat the first defender.

Crystal Palace have plenty of bodies back inside the 18-yard box.

  18. Postpublished at 33 mins

    Everton 1-0 Crystal Palace

Everton work it right to Seamus Coleman, who hooks a delivery into the box but James McCarthy helps it off Bernard and out for a Palace throw. The visitors are sitting so deep when Everton have the ball.
