Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta: "In two key moments we lost the game. We created clear chances and were looking good but we were punished before half-time."

On whether Chelsea were hard done by by VAR decisions: "It's VAR. What disappoints me is the big decisions are taken by a referee on a monitor. The refs should go to the monitor to take the decisions. Of course for Zouma's goal I pushed Williams but I was pushed. At least go to the monitor - it takes 30 seconds. The referee on the pitch has to be the one to take the decisions.

"My intention when I ran to the front post was not to push Williams. I'm not saying the push from Fred was a penalty but my push is a consequence of his push."

On the race for the top four: "We are really disappointed and we cannot hide behind VAR. We have lost all the advantage that we have had - we have thrown that away and now we know we have decisive games coming up and everything is going to be decided. Saturday, against Spurs, is a massive London derby."

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to BBC Sport: "We didn't play particularly well with the ball, we were sloppy and slow at times but defensively it was very good. Eric Bailly was outstanding on his first game back.

"We had the margins on our side, in football it does happen. They were unfortunate with the two VAR goals - the right decisions but they were marginal.

"Was Harry Maguire lucky? I don't think so, he was fouled first and Batshuayi was going to fall on top of him so he put his leg out and hit him where it hurts.

"I didn't see a foul by Fred for the disallowed goal. Luckily there was no VAR when I played. Giroud was a foot, or half a foot offside, at least it wasn't an armpit.

"We are three points behind Chelsea now, that was a massive win tonight. We could not have realistically clawed back nine points.

"Paul Pogba is due back in training tomorrow so let's see where he's at."

Chelsea

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard, speaking to BBC Sport: "It didn't feel like a 2-0 and the performance was good in many ways but moments at this level can lose you the game. The first goal was sloppy, we gave them the ball back. The rest of the game was typical of our home games this season, against a team with five at the back.

"It's not worth me going on about it [the lack of a new striker in January] now but the reality was there for us to see. If we're not going to take chances then we're not going to win games. When you dominate large periods you have to take your chances."

On the VAR controversies: "I've seen it again [the possible Harry Maguire red card] and VAR is there for that and they didn't get it right. Azpilicueta gets a shove in the back - it's not clear, it's not obvious, Azpi has been pushed in the back."

On the stadium emptying after Olivier Giroud's late strike was disallowed: "It's a bit soul destroying but it's the culmination of a few incidents. VAR is there for that and a toe offside is a toe offside, even if we don't like it."

I think it's up to Paul Pogba now to come out and straighten this whole matter out on where he stands.

Why should Ole Gunnar Solskjaer have to come out and answer questions because of what an agent has said? Paul Pogba is a Manchester United player.

He's had opportunities this season to say 'I am committed to Man United'. He posts other stuff on Instagram but come out and tell us you're committed to the club and you don't want your agent talking for you, because that is how most people would see this situation - Mino Raiola is talking and representing Paul Pogba.

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Sky Sports: "We keep another clean sheet, that's four on the bounce. We were a bit leggy, sometimes it takes time to blow the cobwebs out. First half we looked cumbersome but well, it's a result.

"We had good individual performances at times but we were too negative in the first half. It was about time Harry Maguire scored.

"You just want the right decision to be made and we are happy that they were. We have needed that help a few times this season. It looked like a push in the back for the disallowed goal and Harry was just protecting himself.

"This gives us a chance. [of Champions League.] We are not going to get any help, I cannot understand for the life of me why we couldn't play on Saturday as we play on Thursday again.

"I don't have to comment about Mino Raiola through the media, I can talk to him myself."

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard to Sky Sports: "Tough to take on lots of levels, some footballing, some others. It's football and it's life. I'm not complaining about any work ethic from the lads, their heads are down in there. It's a tough night for us.

"It's not a 2-0 game. We have a feeling of groundhog day in the stadium. I don't know how many shots we had but it was a lot. If we don't score, you can't win football games. They get clearer every week. We are fourth and the season starts here. People didn't expect us to be fourth but we are.

"We are fourth because of some of the good stuff we have done and because of the nature of the league with everyone taking points off each other. I'm not soft, I can criticise the team. We can bemoan our luck sometimes yes but if we are not finishing chances we can't win games. I feel like a broken record.

"It was a tough night for Batshuayi, strikers are judged on goals, it's a fact. We need goals from forward areas and we haven't had that this season. We can't rely on Tammy Abraham all season. You get judged as an attacker on goals.

"Harry Maguire should have been sent off, that's clear, and that obviously changes the game. Azpilicueta gets shoved so the goal should stand. Giroud was a toenail offside and that one I understand. that's the rule now.

"I don't get why they aren't looking at the monitor. I think it's been looked at once this season and I don't get that. It should be used."

Chelsea should've won the game tonight. They were the better team and created the better chances, plus they hit the post and they had two goals disallowed.

On this occasion, Man United took their chances but against the lesser teams, they don't know how to dissect smaller teams. You can go on about records against the top sides but why can't they do it against the lesser teams? That's the bigger question for United.

Ben: Wow. Absolute shambles today. Two goals ruled out by VAR, and an obvious red card not given. I would say it's shocking, but really? Is it? No, not one bit shocking.

Matthew: The league is suddenly interesting again. Any team down to 11th - Burnley - could conceivably put together a decent run and end up in a Champions League spot. With the title done and dusted here's hoping the battle for 4th goes to the last day for eight teams.

Man Utd captain Harry Maguire, speaking to Sky Sports: "It was a solid performance. We knew we had to get the win to close the gap. It's a big three points.

"This season we've been far too inconsistent. We've let ourselves down when the pressure has been on to break teams down. We're not getting carried away and the pressure is on to get three points."

On his headed goal: "It's been a long time. I knew it was a matter of time before I scored one and hopefully there are many more to come."

On escaping a red card after appearing to kick out at Michy Batshuayi: "I know I caught him and I felt he was going to fall on me and my natural reaction was to straighten my leg to stop him. It wasn't a kick out and there was no intent. I think it's the right decision. I knew I'd caught him but that I had no intent to hurt him. It was just a natural reaction. I apologised to him and it was nice that the referee saw sense."

Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes: "I feel great, I'm really happy in a difficult game. We needed to win and we can do much better with the ball. Chelsea are really good with the ball.

Harry Maguire has just been interviewed and was refreshingly honest about his incident - he said he straightened his leg out as he thought Michy Batshuayi was going to fall on him.

I enjoyed the game but...were going to be talking about some very odd decision making, aren't we?

I have to say, fair play to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for the way he set this team up. I thought they played with a real desire and a hunger, I was impressed by Bruno Fernandes: his touches and set pieces but they were lucky to finish the game with 10 men on the pitch.

Harry Maguire should've been sent off and I'm still bamboozled as to why the Kurt Zouma goal was ruled out? So, United did have luck on their side as well tonight.
