  3. 'As perfect as it could have gone'published at 16:16 British Summer Time 13 June 2021

    England 1-0 Croatia

    England

England defender Tyrone Mings to BBC Radio 5 Live on his first experience of tournament football: "It was about as perfect as it could have gone. It was important to make a good start. We know the threats they have and how hard it could have been. It was great to play in front of our home fans and to cap it off with a win is perfect."

On playing next to Kieran Trippier: "He is a top, top player. He's very experienced and he talked me through the game. We're so well stocked in every position that anyone who comes in has a responsibility and a part to play."

On how tough it was in the heat: "It was hard. We found strength and belief in our warm up games and training. We have gone into a lot of detail on how we would cause problems for them. Full credit to the staff and players who came on to give us more energy. It was an all-round great day."

  4. 'I loved every second'published at 16:15 British Summer Time 13 June 2021

    FT: England 1-0 Croatia

    England

England defender Tyrone Mings, speaking to BBC Sport: "It's a dream come true to play in a major tournament for England and I loved every second of it.

"It's probably the hottest game I have ever played in!

"The team showed a lot of grit, a lot of determination and a lot of quality.

"I've watched a few tournaments and it seems a lot more straight forward watching them than playing in them. Croatia are a top team as we found out before. We always have quality to trouble teams.

"I can't even remember the move for the goal! We wanted a second goal but it was important we were resilient and kept a clean sheet. We felt composed and in good shape. All credit to the whole team. The players who came on gave us new energy."

  5. 'It was completely about England today'published at 16:14 British Summer Time 13 June 2021

    England 1-0 Croatia

    Frank Lampard
Former England midfielder on BBC One

It would be easy to put down Croatia. They didn't play particularly well but they do have threats and they can play.

The major part of that game was how England pressed, the energy they had. There was a desire and it was completely about England today.

  7. 'I know I have to score here'published at 16:11 British Summer Time 13 June 2021

    England 1-0 Croatia

    England

More from England's Raheem Sterling: "It's a great feeling. It was the first game and we needed a win. We stuck together. We headed the ball when we needed to, cleared it when we needed to and played some good football at times. I thought the boys were brilliant.

"To be honest, I always said to myself if I come here, growing up two minutes down the road, I know I have to score here. It was a great feeling to actually do it.

"We need to try to build on it and enjoy today. We have to focus. It's early days. We need to keep winning, have that winning mentality and keep going forward."

  9. 'Kane looked a little bit slow'published at 16:08 British Summer Time 13 June 2021

    England 1-0 Croatia

    Alan Shearer
Former England striker on BBC One

Harry Kane looked a little bit slow for me. That ball that came across I thought he was going to put in the back of the net. England didn't create that many chances for him to get on the end of but other than Harry Kane everyone looked really sharp.

Bishnu: This was a boring and ugly game, but sometimes you need such games in group stages to build momentum.

A solid start by England, but let's not carried away, Croatia had 1 less shot than England. We edged an even game.

    Chris

We deserved to win, and it was an ok performance, but nothing to wax lyrical about!

The temperature is ridiculous. It is so hot, so credit to the players for how they managed it.

The crowd has been fantastic. The fans have been absolutely brilliant.

The players are applauding the fans. Tournament football is about momentum and this is a great start.

  12. 'I knew it would be a positive experience'published at 16:04 British Summer Time 13 June 2021

    FT: England 1-0 Croatia

    England

England scoring hero Raheem Sterling, speaking to BBC Sport: "It feels good to score. I always said if I played at Wembley at a major tournament I had to score and it's great to finally do that.

"There's a lot of different reasons why I haven't scored for my club and it's totally irrelevant now. I'm here with England and I'm enjoying my football. That's the most important thing.

"Have I justified my selection? [after several seconds]...I'm trying.

"It's great to get off to a win and now we have other games to look forward to. It's been a long season for me but I couldn't wait to get here and get started with England. With England, I knew it would be a positive one. "

    England 1-0 Croatia

    Alan Shearer
Former England striker on BBC One

I'm not saying Raheem Sterling is going to go on and score loads of goals but that decision today took a lot of courage. Gareth knows him, he's worked with him and worked with him in training. Raheem never let him down and Gareth stood by him today and that has worked really well.

  17. 'England can do something'published at 15:58 British Summer Time 13 June 2021

    England 1-0 Croatia

    Frank Lampard
Former England midfielder on BBC One

What a performance, what a result to build on. Gareth's calls were great. The energy of the team, the organisation of the team to have a clean sheet will give confidence to the lads and I see them going from strength to strength off the back of that.

As a manager there's nothing more fulfilling as that when you make calls that maybe could be questions. A right-back at left-back, Phillips playing so high up and he was probably man of the match.

I just think from Gareth's position he can look at that now and say theres something about this group.

With this atmosphere and this crowd behind them they can do something.

    Mark Burt: JOB DONE!!!

Nahan Clerc: Kalvin Phillips MOTM by a mile.

Simon: Well done Gareth Southgate, selection spot on. Sterling, Mings and Phillips were heavily criticised selections by many but were 3 of England best players this afternoon.

    England 1-0 Croatia

    Alan Shearer
Former England striker on BBC One

The whole game I was impressed. England did what they had to do. They set the tone of the game. The balance looked good. Gareth's decisions that we spoke about before the game, all of those have worked so well done Gareth and Well done England.
