Belgium coach Roberto Martínez: "Today wasn't just about how good we could be, it was also about how we adapted to what Portugal do best, which is doing exactly what they need to do in the game to win.

"That's why they are the current Euro champions and they won the Nations League: they have incredible experience and they know how to take those moments when they can hurt you.

"We showed incredible concentration and defended really well. We controlled the game and defended well when we had to. We scored a very good goal and then in the second half, as you would expect, the momentum went to Portugal more.

"We had to show an incredible mentality. Everything was about those aspects of being tactically disciplined and very, very astute. If we had used the final ball and our possession better, we would probably have had a lot of joy from those risks that Portugal took."

A win against Italy in 1972 (0-0 away, 2-1 at home) is Belgium's only win in a Euro quarter-final; they lost to the Netherlands in 1976 (0-5 away, 1-2 at home) and Wales in 2016 (1-3).

Italy have one day more to recover but that won't make a huge difference. Belgium have been travelling all the time. I think we have the most air miles of all the teams. We have no stadium and we can blame the politics for not having a stadium built. The players were complaining about all the travelling so we're the only travelling team basically. That tires you out a bit too. That will be another night rest gone because in a plane you can't sleep and footballers usually don't sleep after a game like this when you've gone deep.

Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois: "I didn't have a lot of work to do in the previous three games, but I knew that wasn't going to be the case against Portugal.

"I am proud of my team-mates; they defended very well. Italy will be difficult too, but we have proved today that we are ready for it."

Congratulations to Belgium. I think the result is completely unfair. Portugal deserved much more than what they achieved. The first half was balanced and both teams didn't deserve to score anything. Second half Portugal played much better. In the end Portugal are out of the Euros, but my feeling is the same. I am proud of the team because they fought a lot and deserved more than they achieved.

Renato Sanches is a fighter. He is a runner, he has a fantastic technique. If clubs need a player like that he is fantastic. He's very powerful and drives the ball to attack and does good defensive work also. He's a very good player and he's young.

I think something important is that he has the desire. You can feel that even now in the pitch and this is important. He has quality and desire. I believe that now he progressed and plays in France he runs and he fights and he did a very good season. He found himself again and still has a big desire to be a top player.

Former Republic of Ireland midfielder Roy Keane on ITV: "Felix is an imposter. Your country needs you, at least hit the target.

"If I was Ronaldo I would have a go at him in the dressing room."

Bob Moss: Would fancy Belgium to win it, but losing Hazard and KDB could change my mind.

Dan Phillips: Belgium got the goal they needed, and what a superb strike it was. They saw the game out relatively comfortably. Job well done. Portugal underwhelming. Ronaldo non-existent. Tournament football is about finding ways to win games, not always impressive performances.

Former Republic of Ireland midfielder Roy Keane on ITV: "Belgium were composed and Portugal still created some chances, it certainly wasn’t pretty but they lacked the quality in the final third.

"They have no one to blame but themselves, they fought like champions but it wasn’t mean to be."

Former England striker, Ian Wright on ITV: "We can look at Rui Patricio, he’s got his feet wrong on that goal and this level the difference is the goalkeeper.

"Courtois handled everything really well, and for me, if that was Courtois he would’ve saved that. That was the difference."

Belgium defender Thomas Vermaelen: "In the first half we were playing high and putting pressure on Portugal, but looking at that second half, we are lucky to win.

"Portugal made it really hard for us. We had to really stay focused. It has cost us a lot of energy, but we have some time to recover and now we are looking forward to the game against Italy."

Gastro0: well done Belgium! maybe now we can enjoy the other players on the pitch and stop talking endlessly about Ronaldo….

Bobby Seagull: Feeling a bit nostalgic if that is the last time we see Ronaldo play in the European Championships. Will we see him at the World Cup in Qatar in 2022 to battle Messi one final time?

I'm relieved. You have to ask at what price now losing Kevin De Bruyne and Eden Hazard. Anyway, this team will need some recovery sessions before Friday I think. They dug deep for the victory. We're through that's the good thing, but at what price that's the main question.
