I've seen 3 semi final loses by England in my lifetime but the 1990 one always sticks with me the most emotionally. Maybe because I was only 11. They all hurt though, hopefully this one will end differently.

Massive game for not just the team tonight, but the whole country! Everyone has had a difficult period the last 12 to 18 months .. These next two games could really spark something special in this country for the next few months. Hopefully with lockdown ending, this is really going to put the cherry on top! 2 0 England .. Kane and Sterling to score

    England v Denmark (20:00 BST)

    Peter Schmeichel
Former Denmark goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

There seems to be a narrative that we are only here because of what happened in the first game and that gave Denmark wings. But it has been like this for about four years now - we've been playing really good football, entertaining, scoring goals, winning points, conceding few goals.

The new coach Kasper Hjulmand has not even been in the job a year but he has introduced players and added to what was already there. We are in the semi-final on merit, not because of what happened to Christian Eriksen - that has definitely had an effect on the nation and banded us together and given football a lot of attention.

In Denmark now there are more people following football and watching this game than ever before. But I don't think the team has got wings from that incident - they have been at this quality level for a while and I'm hopeful for tonight.

The DJ has got the crowd going for sure. Just watching the England players now because they're coming quite close over. The defenders in particular are in deep conversation but in the centre of the pitch is Jack Grealish and Phil Foden who are on skills show just showing off that's even more impressive.

The starting XI are doing their fast feet, their warm-ups. The pitch isn't cutting up as bad as the other day and they seem really focused. They're just running in now to applause for the England fans and they look on it I'm not going to lie.

Denmark striker Nadia Nadim on ITV: "We knew we would do well. It's been absolutely amazing to watch them. I am so excited right now.

"It's a really good team. They work hard for each other. The incident with Christian Eriksen has brought them together more. That is a dangerous combination. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to see that England have the better players but football is football. We will see what happens.

"I can't breathe. My heart explodes. I don't know if it's 'coming home' or going to Denmark but it will be an amazing night.

"It's time for us to hear a new story. I think this could be it. Anything can happen. I hope!"

    Alistair Magowan
    BBC Sport

Former Denmark and Arsenal midfielder John Jensen, who scored in the Euro 1992 final win over Germany, tells BBC Sport there are similarities between the current side and the one he played in.

He says they struggled in the opening group games because they were missing their best player in Michael Laudrup, but after Christian Eriksen's cardiac arrest against Russia in Denmark's opening game, he says: "We have already won the Euros in our opinion because Christian is alive."

He added: "The most important thing, is that social thing they have together. They are really a team in the dressing room and hotel, and that camaraderie was one of the reasons we won in 1992 and I think this team have that too. I really believe we can go all the way and win the trophy again."

    England v Denmark (20:00 BST)

    Rio Ferdinand
Former England defender on BBC One

Being England, it doesn't matter who you play in the final because I believe England beat Italy.

I just feel no one can compete with England right now. People might say I am getting carried away I don't care. What I have seen I think England are the best team and they beat Italy.

But they have to beat Denmark first.

  9. 'England are not going to have a better chance of lifting the trophy'published at 19:39 British Summer Time 7 July 2021

    England v Denmark (20:00 BST)

    Chris Waddle
Ex-England winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

I said at the start of the tournament I fancied Italy and I said if England don't get to the semi-final they'd be very, very disappointed. They've had every game here bar one in Rome, they are not going to have a better chance of lifting the trophy when they're playing at home all the time. People say a pitch is a pitch, no, it's your home ground. If they didn't get to the semis they will have had a bad tournament.

31 years of watching England (it all started at Italia 90) and this is the best I've ever felt as a fan. Come on England!

    James, Upper Heyford

Can't bring myself to watch. Haven't watched a single minute so far, and it's worked. I've criticised Southgate every selection, and that's worked too. Start Grealish. He is the only creative player we have

When it comes to Gareth Southgate, you'll hear a lot said about his style.

And we're not talking about his waistcoats - which seem to have been ditched for Euro 2020 - but his management style and how he's led England to the semi-finals of this football tournament.

So what's his secret? Is it making sure that the players are getting an early night before a match? Or that they eat a special meal?

Apparently it's a lot simpler than that: he'll just be having a chat.

  19. 'England are in a good position'published at 19:28 British Summer Time 7 July 2021

    England v Denmark (20:00 BST)

    Chris Sutton
Former Premier League striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

Gareth Southgate is a big fan of Mason Mount he will probably play, Raheem Sterling will probably play. That partnership of Declan Rice and Kalvin Phillips was much maligned at the start of the tournament with people saying he should only play one holding midfielder but no one really talks about that now. So it's that position on the right now really that can change - whether it's Jack Grealish, Phil Foden, Bukayo Saka or Jadon Sancho.

England are in a good position because they are so defensively sound and sides who come onto England suit them better. Where England struggled in the final third in the early stages of the tournament, it was against teams who defended deep, sides who come onto England are tailor made for them.
