Italy's fans are here in large numbers and in great form. They are waving their flags and seem surprisingly familiar with Tony Christie's "Amarillo" - then again who isn't?

I’m not going to lie to you, I really like Giorgio Chiellini. He probably isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, as he does have a Sergio Ramos/Pepe element to him. You know the behaviour. It ends with the word “housing”.

He’s also a character, though. A grinning, back-slapping, anthem-belting war-horse (although Jordi Alba might disagree). If he was English, we’d absolutely adore him. It’s going to be a fascinating battle between him, Leonardo Bonucci and the England front three.

You want your captain and leader to be nice and relaxed. If your leader is calm, collective and enjoying the moment the team will reflect that. It relaxes everyone else and it's the same with Gareth Southgate.

If you want to chart the journey of this current Italy team to this point, a significant stop-off along the way is the 2013 Under-21 European Championships. Below is the Italy team beaten in the final by Spain. Recognise anyone?

Second from right at the top is Ciro Immobile, numbers 10 and 4 on the front row are Lorenzo Insigne and Marco Verratti. These three, along with young goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, old guard defensive pair of Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci and pass-master Jorginho are the core of the current Italy. Sprinkle the magic of Nicolo Barrella on top and you have some side.

So, 33 games unbeaten eh? That’s not at all scary for England fans. I think we’re all big and mature enough to acknowledge that this Italy are some side, and that Roberto Mancini has done a major job in restoring them to a major international force.

Fuelled partly by his own frustrating and fractious international playing career, Mancini – a gem of a player, mainly for Sampdoria – has embraced his second chance in management. You’ll know about what he achieved at Manchester City, and likely also aware of his success before that at Inter Milan. But he is now on the verge of Italian football immortality.

From failing to reach the World Cup for the first time since 1958 three years ago under the out-of-his-depth Gian Piero Ventura, they are now a game away from being European champions. Fair play, Roberto.

This England side has been well received. They have made a huge impression to everyone outside of England and there is a lot of respect for what Gareth Southgate has achieved.

There is a lot of admiration for this England side and everyone maybe outside of Italy are intrigued to see if England can go all the way.

My heart is with England especially with the way they played until this point. I think we are going to see a great exciting finial. Very difficult in the beginning and we will definitely see some nerves but we are in for a great final.

We were here when there was 40,000 and we were all saying how incredible that atmosphere was. We've all played at a Wembley stadium with 80 or 90,000, but that night against Germany was incredible and the same in the semi-final against Denmark.

My one concern before the tournament started was how tired the players could be because a lot of them would have been running on empty with how many games they'd had to play in such a short amount of time. It's been so special right from the very start when Italy kicked us off, to now. I just hope the final is the same.

I think overall we saw a fantastic Euro 2020 with all of the drama. We saw wonderful games, amazing goals and more own goals than we are used to.

A lot of surprises in the tournament, I think the two teams playing this final absolutely deserve to be in the final.

England also scored 37 times in qualifying, but in two games fewer than Sunday’s opponents. This included big wins home and away against Bulgaria and 7-0 against Montenegro. Sadly, the qualifying campaign was marred by racism involving the two aforementioned countries, with the game in Bulgaria stopped twice because of disgusting chants from the home crowd. England’s run to the final has been calm, cool, not always scintillating, but very controlled. In short, very un-England.

Italy breezed through qualification for Euro 2020. 10 games, 10 wins. They scored 37 goals and conceded just four. As is well-documented, they are currently on a 33-game unbeaten run ahead of today’s final. They had to dig deep to see off Spain, who were probably the better side in the semis, but that’s what good teams do.

You all know the broader context of this. England are looking to end a 55-year stretch without a major trophy and they’re back at the (remodelled) venue at which they won their first – the 1966 World Cup. Italy have better pedigree on the international stage, having won five major titles, including four World Cups, the latest of which was in 2006. However, while England were reaching the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup, Italy were sat at home having failed to qualify. This tournament has been some return to form. Let’s go back a bit, though, to see how both teams got here…

  12. 'Would I have picked this formation? Probably not.'published at 18:45 British Summer Time 11 July 2021

    Italy v England (20:00 BST)

    Micah Richards
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

I think with Gareth, he's shown us all that we can be flexible as a nation, we played this formation against Germany and we got the result.

I'm worried about that midfield battle, when we don't have the ball we're three in the back but that turns into five in the back, but I think there's too many defensive players on there. I understand if Italy were going to go the same way, it makes sense, but Italy's strengths is Verratti, Barella and Jorginho. If you give them time on the ball then England are going to find it hard. With this formation, it's going to allow Italy to grow in confidence.

I believe in Gareth and what he's done, but would I have picked this formation and line up? probably not.

Paul Blezard: Whatever happens, whoever wins, whatever the score Gareth Southgate & England have put English football on the map with honour, dignity and pride. I hope we win, I really do. This team deserves to. Good luck, but mainly, enjoy what you have earned and created.

England have actually restored a lot of people's faith in football because of the shenanigans that had gone on with the Premier League etc. and a lot of people had fallen out of love with football. Over the past month these guys and the manager have made the people think again and feel how special football can be.

"We are dealing with an incident that occurred at the outer security perimeter area of the stadium, with support from police.

"Safety measures were quickly activated in the relevant areas and there were no security breaches of people without tickets getting inside the stadium."
