Former England midfielder on BBC One

They have shown themselves to be well-rounded young men in so many ways. The public can see that more clearly and the players can be more direct. They should get as much credit as they can.

    Rio Ferdinand
Former England defender on BBC One

There are definitely negatives that come along with social media. But there are some positives and being able to amplify what you do is one of the positives. They've come closer to the public, whereas in years gone by our squads were a little bit disconnected .

  4. 'Mixture of talent and balance'published at 19:08 British Summer Time 11 July 2021

    Frank Lampard
Former England midfielder on BBC One

Players will win you tournaments and the talent we have and options we have... Raheem Sterling, for example, can go one-v-one and he gives you those moments. We have players who can do that. Gareth Southgate has found that balance too. It's a mixture of the talent in the dressing room and Gareth balancing it really well.

It has been a good few weeks for Atomic Kitten. They probably didn’t think to book out the Euros in their calendar for public appearances, but here we are. Every time I’ve switched a TV on they’ve been there smiling back at me like it’s 2001 again. They’re back in the charts with this…

England defender Harry Maguire: "It is an amazing feeling to get this chance, an opportunity to play in a major tournament final.

"We are here to win, the final is there to be won and that is our mentality. We have prepared well, we are focused, we are ready.

"We have prepared exactly as we have for any other game. We remain focused and clear minded what our job is and our gameplan.

"Italy are experienced and have great players. They fully deserve to be in the final."

  13. 'Southgate isn't afraid to make changes'published at 19:01 British Summer Time 11 July 2021

    Italy v England (20:00 BST)

    Alan Shearer
Former England striker on BBC One

Gareth has proved in the past that he's not afraid to make big decisions and to change the team around. He'll expect Trippier to get forward very much like Saka did because I think that's one area of the pitch where we can cause them problems in behind Emerson.

  14. 'Strength lies in England's adaptability'published at 19:01 British Summer Time 11 July 2021

    Italy v England (20:00 BST)

    Rio Ferdinand
Former England defender on BBC One

The biggest strength of this team is Gareth doesn't know his best 11 so that makes it hard difficult for the opposing manager to read him. He is very adaptable to be able to go from one formation to another, change personnel seamlessly, that is where the strength lies with this squad.

  15. 'You've got to give the FA some credit'published at 19:01 British Summer Time 11 July 2021

    Italy v England (20:00 BST)

    Alan Shearer
Former England striker on BBC One

You've got to give the FA some credit for the plan they had. This hasn't just happened in the last two or three years. It's been building towards this. We've got a magnificent training complex, we've got a smart, intelligent manager who understands what it takes to play for your country.

He knows how to break the cliques up and make everyone feel involved. Even after games, he's first to mention the guys who haven't played to make them feel involved and it's such a special feeling. Being away for five weeks in a bubble isn't easy. Gareth has made it fun and they are getting their results now.

  16. 'Southgate has created a winning mentality'published at 19:00 British Summer Time 11 July 2021

    England v Italy (20:00 BST)

    Rio Ferdinand
Former England defender on BBC One

I genuinely believe that [club rivalries destroyed previous teams]. It just consumed you, there was nothing from the England squad from the manager downwards that made you feel any different.

I think that is where Gareth Southgate separates himself from the other managers, he's gone in and identified that this team needs to be together. "I am going to create a culture, a winning mentality and a mentality where we are all together". Togetherness is of the utmost importance.

  17. 'It doesn't feel quite right.'published at 18:59 British Summer Time 11 July 2021

    Italy v England (20:00 BST)

    Karen Carney
Former England winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

There is something a little bit different in the atmosphere.

There's a lot of nerves in the stadium, the other day there was excitement and energy at this time, but at the moment it doesn't feel quite right. Maybe it'll change when the players get on the pitch, but I'm putting it down to nerves.

  20. 'Can we stretch Italy?'published at 18:58 British Summer Time 11 July 2021

    Italy v England (20:00 BST)

    Frank Lampard
Former England midfielder on BBC One

Gareth Southgate won't want it to be like that [playing with a back five]. When you have the ball, can you make it a three? The Italian team will want to play centrally. Can we stretch them with our width? I think it's a clever call from Gareth. We will have to see how it pays out but I understand his thinking.
