  2. 'Italy love the drama'published at 17:29 British Summer Time 11 July 2021

    Italy v England (20:00 BST)

    Italy

Former Italian World Cup winner Alessandro Del Piero to BBC Radio 5 Live: "You [England] are a little bit more anxious because you play at home but I hear some players talking a really, really good way from my point of view. Excited but calm. And this is important.

"I think the journey with Gareth Southgate - it’s not just these tournaments - it's also the work before. The team grows together and they help each other a lot. And you build that much, much earlier before the tournament and I'm talking about two years before when you start the first game of qualification. Those first weeks are the ones that determine ‘what are we going to do? Do we believe to reach the final? Or is it just a journey today?’

"Because it's a long period, you need to be consistent and I believe that Roberto Mancini and Southgate did this work and did it super well because the players are really, really involved 100 per cent.

"We [Italy] love the drama, sometimes we are in the middle of the drama. There is history, yes. There is a behavior, there is a lot of things.

"I'm not saying that there's nothing but we are all super happy to see fans back in the stadium and have the opportunity to play this big tournament so we need to be focused on the joy of the game. Let's put aside everything and focus on the beauty of the game."

Kieran Trippier will start for England in tonight’s Euro 2020 final with Italy at Wembley, BBC Sport understands.

It had been thought Gareth Southgate would name an unchanged line-up from the semi-final win over Denmark, when Trippier was on the bench.

But the Atletico Madrid man will be in Southgate’s starting line-up as England revert to wing-backs and a back three as they look to become European Champions for the first time.

England XI: Pickford, Trippier, Walker, Stones, Maguire, Shaw, Rice, Phillips, Sterling, Mount, Kane.

Italy's fans have already noisily claimed a large part of their corner of Wembley while just a few England fans are dotted around. There is a mood of huge optimism and joy among the Italian followers and why not? Roberto Mancini's team have gone 33 games unbeaten.

Former Italian World Cup winner Alessandro Del Piero to BBC Radio 5 Live: "Giorgio Chiellini shows a lot of joy. He’s a really great guy and you love to have him in your team.

"I loved the time that we spent together. He's incredible and is probably the best defender that we have in Italy - man versus man.

"In terms of experience – he’s really unbelievable. The joy that he shows is because he knows that it's the last dance for him so he deserves to do win something with the team and of course I would cheer for him even more."

Some pretty wild scenes outside Wembley as thousands of England fans are jam packed into some areas. It does not take an expert to see that a fair number of these fans will either not see the game of if they do will not remember it.

    England 2-1 Denmark (aet) (recap)

Harry Maguire gets his head to a Mason Mount free-kick and it looks like the ball is going in only for Kasper Schmeichel to save at full stretch and deny England going into a 2-1 lead. What a save that was.

  17. 'England is a great team'published at 16:50 British Summer Time 11 July 2021

    Italy v England (20:00 BST)

    Italy

Former Italian World Cup winner Alessandro Del Piero to BBC Radio 5 Live: "Harry Kane is an incredible striker and then Raheem Sterling and Mason Mount, you have incredible talent.

"And Bukayo Saka, I love this guy. In the semi-final, Harry Maguire was hitting every ball that came in the air. So, you never know. In our final in 2006, Marco Materazzi scored a goal.

"You never expect Materazzi to score, we had incredible strikers and forwards in 2006 and then a goal from a defender. It's very unpredictable.

"The England team is really, really strong and I love the midfielders as well. They give a great balance to the team. You have a great team."

  20. 'Both teams should be proud'published at 16:41 British Summer Time 11 July 2021

    Italy v England (20:00 BST)

    Italy

Former Italian World Cup winner Alessandro Del Piero to BBC Radio 5 Live: "I hope it will be a good final and not that boring because I believe both teams feel the importance of the moment.

"They have two different moments, but both moments for the teams are really, really important. Italy haven’t won the tournament since 1968. They come in from the failure to qualify for the 2018 World Cup. That was a really big hit for us.

"And England have not been in the final for even longer. So the importance of the game, it's massive. It's huge.

"Both teams should be really, really proud about what they did because it's not easy to reach the final as we see. I believe that England have a little bit more pressure."
